Chapter 7: "The Plot Thickens"
Emily's unease lingered as she left the office with Alexander. The threatening phone call had left her on high alert, and she couldn't shake the suspicion that she was being watched.
As they walked to the parking garage, Alexander's security team flanked them, their eyes scanning the surrounding area for any signs of danger. Emily noticed that they seemed more vigilant than usual, their faces set in determined expressions.
"I'm sorry about this, Emily," Alexander said, his voice low and concerned. "I didn't realize that taking on my case would put you in harm's way."
Emily shook her head, trying to reassure him. "It's not your fault, Alexander," she said. "I knew what I was getting into when I took on your case."
Alexander's eyes locked on hers, and for a moment, Emily thought she saw a flicker of genuine concern. "I appreciate your bravery, Emily," he said. "But I also want to make sure you're safe."
The security team led them to a sleek black SUV, where Alexander's driver, a imposing figure with a stern expression, waited to escort them to Emily's apartment.
As they drove through the city, Emily gazed out the window, her mind racing with questions. Who was behind the threatening phone call? And what did they want from her?
When they arrived at her apartment, Alexander's security team flanked her, their eyes scanning the surrounding area for any signs of danger. Emily noticed that they seemed to be taking extra precautions, checking the doors and windows before giving her the all-clear.
"I'll be fine," Emily said, trying to reassure Alexander. "I'll lock the doors and windows, and I'll be safe."
Alexander nodded, his eyes locked on hers. "I'll make sure you're safe," he said. "I'll post a security team outside your apartment."
Emily's eyes widened in surprise, but she knew better than to argue with Alexander. She was in danger, and she needed his protection.
As Alexander turned to leave, Emily caught his arm, her hand brushing against his sleeve. "Wait," she said, her voice low. "I need to ask you something."
Alexander turned back to her, his eyes questioning. "What is it?" he asked.
Emily hesitated, unsure of how to phrase her question. "I was wondering if you knew anything about Samantha's past," she said finally. "Anything that might explain why she's so determined to bring you down."
Alexander's expression turned thoughtful, and he nodded slowly. "I think I might know something," he said. "But it's not something I'm comfortable discussing here."
Emily's curiosity was piqued, and she leaned in, her eyes locked on Alexander's. "Where can we discuss it?" she asked.
Alexander smiled, a hint of mischief in his eyes. "I'll take you somewhere safe," he said. "Somewhere we can talk without being overheard."
Emily's heart skipped a beat as she realized what Alexander was suggesting. She was about to embark on a journey with a man she barely knew, a man who was accused of murder. And yet, she felt a thrill of excitement at the prospect.
"Okay," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm ready."
As they drove through the city, Emily couldn't help but notice the way Alexander's eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled. Or the way his hair curled slightly at the nape of his neck. She felt a flutter in her chest, and quickly pushed the feeling away. She was his lawyer, not some swooning schoolgirl.
They arrived at a small, unassuming restaurant on the outskirts of the city. Alexander led her inside, where they were greeted by the owner, a friendly woman who showed them to a private room in the back.
As they sat down at the table, Emily couldn't help but notice the way Alexander's eyes seemed to sparkle in the dim light. She felt a tiny thrill of attraction, and quickly pushed it away. She was here to discuss the case, not to indulge in frivolous feelings.
"So, what did you want to tell me about Samantha's past?" Emily asked, trying to sound professional.
Alexander leaned forward, his eyes locked on hers. "I think Samantha's motivations go deeper than just revenge," he said. "I think she's trying to cover up something from her own past."
Emily's ears perked up, intrigued. "What do you mean?" she asked.
Alexander hesitated, as if unsure of how much to reveal. "I think Samantha was involved in some shady dealings a few years ago," he said. "And I think she's trying to use me as a scapegoat to distract from her own wrongdoing."
Emily's eyes widened as she processed the information. This was a whole new level of complexity to the case.
As they continued to discuss the case, Emily found herself stealing glances at Alexander. She couldn't help but notice the way his eyes seemed to light up when he talked about something he was passionate about. Or the way his smile seemed to transform his entire face.
She felt a tiny pang of attraction, and quickly pushed it away. She was his lawyer, not some lovesick fool.
But as they finished their meal and prepared to leave, Emily couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment. She had enjoyed their conversation, and she didn't want the evening to end.
As they walked out of the restaurant, Alexander turned to her and smiled. "Thank you for listening, Emily," he said. "I feel like I can finally start to clear my name."
Emily smiled back, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. "We're just getting started," she said. "But I'm confident that we can get to the bottom of this."
As they walked back to the car, Emily couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. She was determined to solve the case, and she was glad to have Alexander by her side.
But as they drove away from the restaurant, Emily couldn't help but notice the way Alexander's eyes seemed to gleam in the dark. She felt a tiny flutter in her chest, and quickly pushed it away. She was his lawyer, not some lovesick fool.
Or was she?
