Chapter XVI (Wake Me Up)
Midtown Manhattan, February 12th 2023
Publicist – Jordan! Jordan! Wake up!
Jordan (sleepy) – Please let me sleep a little more Elsie.
Publicist – No, honey. You have to go.
Publicist – You're two hours late for the shooting of Dreaming Nights.
Jordan (sleepy and dizzy) – But I don't want to. I'm not prepared. I'm not feeling inspired.
Publicist – Jordan Wright please get your ass of that bed. I won't bear this behaviour.
Jordan (still sleepy but mad) – You don't have to bear anything.
Jordan – I can dispose of you anytime you want. You are so replaceable.
Publicist – Is that how you feel about me?!
Jordan – No, sorry.
Jordan – I'm just a bit hurt about Roderick overreactment about my relationship with the press.
Publicist – That's the least problem you have to deal with, honey.
Publicist – This is a mad business, you're always almost pushed into the lions den.
Publicist – You either let them push or you get off of them and try to save yourself. Okay?!
Jordan - Okay.
Publicist – Bastien is coming and then I'll call your personal driver so we can go to the movie studios.
Jordan – Wasn't I supposed to shoot in the streets of New York?!
Publicist – Roderick changed the script last night.
Publicist – You will have few scenes in the streets of New York. You will be appearing more in buildings.
Jordan – That moron. He is toying with me but I can't let him win.
Publicist – Now you're the one who's overreacting.
Publicist – Go get dressed and don't mind your breakfast, there's plenty of food in your limousine.
Jordan (angry) – Right.
I dress my clothes and grab a trench coat and a beanie.
The streets of New York at these time is still chilly.
Elsie tells me to pick the script because I was leaving it at home without knowing.
Bastien is already in front of my loft, inside of the limousine.
I say good morning to the driver and he smiles to me, I give a look to Bastien and he gives me dark sunglasses.
It's not sunny I know, but I have so many dark circles and trust me.
I better have my face covered in the morning because I'm not really smiley.
Bastien – So today...
Jordan – Please Bastien, I'm not trying to sound rude, but I can't hear anybody right now.
Jordan – Let's just drive to this fucking movie studio and then maybe I listen to people.
Bastien – I'm sorry, I'm not trying to bore you Mr. Wright.
Publicist – Bastien, please shut it.
Jordan – You're two are getting on my last nerve right now.
The rest of the trip was really silent and that soothe me.
I'm so tired of voices, people asking me questions, people giving me directions, people controlling me with their voice.
People want to get in this bizz but they don't know the dark behind it.
We arrive at the movie studios and the entire cast is all dressed up. Sam looks furious.
He comes in a rage running in my direction.
Sam – Why are you always fucking late?!
Jordan – There's no need to be vulgar. I'm not late, you're all are just early.
Jordan – And I arrive late, as to say, because I have to prepare.
Sam – Stop it. You're not Marilyn Monroe. Stop this bullshit.
Sam – It was cute with Marilyn, but it's not with you.
Jordan – Who says I'm pulling a Marilyn Monroe? I just arrive late because I don't feel prepared.
Sam – Then get prepared. Come on we have to shoot some scenes.
Sam – Please don't makes us use a lot of takes today.
Jordan – I'll try my best. I want the new script.
Jordan – I heard there were some changes in it, so I want to be updated.
Sam – Sure.
Sam (screaming) – Roderick can you please bring me a copy of the new script?!
Roderick walks fast, he is now like Sam's puppet. He tries everything to please Sam.
Roderick – Hi Jordan, here's your new script.
Jordan – Thank you.
Sam – Thank you Roderick. But please update the actor when you make a change in the script.
Roderick - Okay, sure.
Sam – No, even better. Stop changing the fucking script!
Sam – It's confusing to the actors and to me.
Roderick – I'm really sorry. But this is the final one, I'm happy with it.
Roderick – I will not make any more changes.
Sam - That's what I'm talking about.
Sam – Good morning everyone.
Sam – Well today we are going to shoot the scenes in the Dreaming Nights.
Everybody starts to get into character, some grab their scripts others just go straight to filming the scenes.
Sam – Jordan would you come here please?
Jordan – Sure.
Sam – Is everything okay?
Jordan – Yes, why wouldn't it be?!
Sam – You've been acting like Marilyn was in her movie career.
Sam – And I heard that you had a temper tantrum in the limousine.
Jordan – You're all trying to make me mad aren't you?!
Jordan – I've been myself, I'm not trying to act as some other star.
Jordan – And yes I did have a temper tantrum. But you want to know why?!
Sam – I'm here talking to you, so I guess it's clear that I do want to know why!
Jordan – Alrighty then. You all have been controlling me to the point I can't have a break.
Jordan – A time for myself. I don't have freedom anymore.
Sam – I thought you would know since the first time you entered this business that your life wouldn't be easy.
To be a star you have to go through all these stuff like interviews, press conferences, talk shows and photoshoots.
Sam – It's something that a true star does.
Sam – So don't be ungrateful and try to sound like a victim because you knew what you'd get into!
Jordan – You know what?!
Sam – What?!
Jordan – I quit!
Sam - Predictable. You haven't grown. You're the same Jordan from the first NYU application.
Jordan – Don't you dare!
Sam – You don't like to take criticism.
Sam – You simply walk out, because you think that's the way you're going to overcome your problems.
Sam – But let me tell you something.
Jordan – Please do.
Sam – Once you walk out too many times, doors will start to shut right in your face.
Jordan - I know you're right. I don't take criticism really well but I need my space.
Jordan – I feel like I can't breathe. I can't be myself. I don't have a day off.
Jordan – I have that fucking publicist entering my loft any time she wants.
Jordan – Not to mention I live with a dramaturg and playwriter. I know that's what I signed of to.
Jordan – But don't I deserve a day for myself? Without having to put on a character, to give autographs, to have pictures been taken.
Sam - You're right. You do need a day off.
Jordan – I want to go out and live like I lived before. Is that much to ask for?!
Sam – I completely forgot how you start to get mad when you're put into much pression.
Sam – Please just shoot your scenes and then you have the rest of this day and tomorrow to live as you please.
Sam – Okay?!
Jordan – Sure. Thank you for being so kind.
Sam – You're welcome.
Sam – Now come. You're going with Selena the costume designer of the movie.
Sam – And then you will come to me and I'll take to you to the set of your character's living room.
Sam – Oh and we changed your character's name, it's not Christopher anymore, now it is Darren.
Jordan – Alright, I'll be back in a few as Darren.
I go with Selena and she show me my character outfits and I start to dress for the scene in the living room.
I have a dressing room of my own, the door on the outside has a star and my name under it.
I look into the mirror circled by led lights and I look at myself. How I have changed.
And I take time to look at my face and not try to find flaws even though they exist.
I try to embrace my flaws and like my face. But what you fake to not see, others do see.
So I have to resort to makeup to cover those flaws.
A bit of foundation and concealer to give me a smooth and flawless complexion.
Right next to the mirror there's a wig holder with a cap, like those french caps.
I guess it makes part of my outfit. I apply the makeup, put on the cap and look into the mirror and I know I'm ready to shoot some scenes.
But I'm not happy because I don't feel like it.
I have this thing that you shouldn't force art, because if you do, nothing good comes from it.
I get out my dressing room and walk until I can see Sam again.
In the way I find may actors and actresses looking so happy and I'm just bored and without drive.
I arrive next to Sam and let him guide me to the set of the living room of Darren.
Sam – So you will be seated here in this couch. It's nightime and you are dreaming.
Sam – You're an enthusiastic guy who likes to dream and likes to help others.
Jordan – Alright.
I go sit in the couch and grab a laptop and search for groups.
Sam – Okay, so... action!
The camera man starts to film me.
I'm looking for groups and I wonder about dreams.
Jordan as Darren - Dreams. Dreams are the fuel of life. Without them our lives don't make sense.
Jordan as Darren – But what is my dream?! What do other people dream?!
I'm scrolling down an internet page on how to build a group.
Jordan as Darren - I guess that's it. I've always volunteered and I like to help people.
Jordan as Darren – So I guess my dream is to create a group to help people achieve their dreams!
Jordan as Darren – What an odd dream. But dreams aren't meant to be sweet and beautiful.
Jordan as Darren – They're meant to fulfill your needs and your ambitions.
I get up off the couch and look through the window that clearly tells us that is nightime.
Jordan as Darren – That's it. I'm going to create a group online. And it will be called Dreaming Nights.
Sam – Cut, print it there.
Jordan – Was I good?!
Sam - You were amazing. Nice movements, you knew all of your lines, you delivered such a hopeful perfomance.
Jordan – Thank you, that's really nice to hear.
Sam – Now you can have your day off.
Jordan – Thank you. I thought you'd never give me the permission to do it.
Sam – Please when you come back try to be less salty and more controlled.
Jordan – And please when I come back try to be less cocky and more helpful, you're being an asshole.
I go to my dressing room, slam the door.
I take my character's outfit out and put it on a hanger and then I sit on my vanity mirror.
I grab the baby wipes and take all of the makeup I have in my face.
I put them on the trash can and then leave the studio, not by limousine but by the subway.
