Chapter XIX (The Date)
Greenwich Village, February 28th 2016
After I'm dismissed from Theatre History's class I ran out of school and take the subway to my apartment.
After I arrived I search for the keys in my pocket and open the main door of the Dakota and Oscar is not near to be seen.
Good, he's a creepy man.
I click on the elevator button and get in.
I push the button that has the number two in it and the elevator starts doing its job that is taking me to my floor.
I open the doors quickly. I'm really anxious for the date.
I've never been asked for one. Since all my crushes were just that, crushes.
I was never loved back by everyone I truly loved.
I actually don't even know how a relationship works.
Dates?! I thought that were just things that happened in movies and tv shows.
I take a quick shower. Put my face in a bowl with ice and then start brush my very short brown hair.
I run naked to my bedroom.
Since I got an apartment of my own I feel I can be free and with that I think being naked at home is nice.
I open my wardrobe and search for my signature casual/formal outfit.
I grab a plain white t-shirt. Then a white long sleeved shirt and a bordeaux pullover and dark blue chino pants.
I wear these things in a big rush.
I don't know why I'm doing things in such a hurry. Sam hasn't even texted me the place or the hours of the date.
I look at my mirror that is as tall as I am. And I see that I'm looking good.
And believe me it's hard for me to be glad looking into my reflection.
My awkward body makes me stress about clothing and people.
Because I always think that my clothes don't suit my body and people always criticize my body.
There's only left my brown classic loafers.
I hear the bell ring, I put on my shoes and say to the person behind the door that I'm coming.
With the shoes put, I open the door and it's Sam.
Jordan – Hey there. Please come in.
Sam – Hey good afternoon handsome.
Jordan – Please don't.
Sam – Why don't you like compliments?
Jordan – I'm still trying to adapt to this whole new kind of relationship.
Jordan – Well I guess I'm getting ready for a relationship because I've never been in one.
Sam – Okay I'll keep that in mind. Baby steps.
Jordan – Right.
Jordan – So where are we going?
Sam – Well you told me to surprise you so we will go now.
Jordan – Okay.
I go to my bedroom again and grab a coat.
New York is really cold yall. So a coat is essential to live in this city.
Then I go to the bathroom, put a bit of moisturizer and a bit of perfume.
Well not a bit. I almost bathe myself in perfume.
I hear Sam laughing, probably because he is hearing the non stop sound of me spraying perfume.
I go to the living room and I look at Sam.
My eyes are telling that we can go. But he's a bit slow and don't gets that so I have to tell him.
Jordan – We can go.
Sam – Alright.
Sam – You look amazing and smell so, so, so good.
Jordan – You're trying to say that I put a lot of perfume aren't you?!
Sam (joking) – A lot? I bet you used the whole bottle.
Jordan (laughing) – Moron.
Sam – So let's go.
Jordan – My wallet! I have to get my wallet and my subway card.
Sam – Okay go get it, but you won't need the subway card.
I go get my wallet and when I come back I ask Sam why I won't need my subway card.
Sam – Well I'll show you why.
We get into the elevator and go to the main floor and leave the Dakota.
Outside of it, it is parked a white limousine.
Jordan – Is that yours?
Sam – No, but my father is the CEO of a limousine factory so I asked him if he could get me one for today and he agreed.
Jordan – You never told me that.
Sam (chuckling) – Would you get in please?
Jordan – As you wish.
I enter the limousine and it's so pretty in here.
The seats are velveted and there's a mini bar in the left corner.
Sam enters after me.
As he enters, a partition starts to roll down.
I hadn't even noticed it. A man in a black suit is in the driver seat.
Driver – Sam where are we going?
Sam – Edmond I already told you.
Sam – It's supposed to be a surprise to Jordan.
Jordan (to the driver) – Hi!
Driver – Okay monsieur. I totally forgot about that.
Sam – And Edmond, please roll up the partition please.
I find this fancy but I can't tell him that yet. I want to see what he has planned.
This is actually a pretty good start.
I don't want to be claimed as shallow but who doesn't like posh and fancy things?!
I look through the windows and I'm not seeing familiar places.
Well I'm new to New York, there's that but I already know some places but these ones are new to me.
Sam opens a compartment and takes a bottle of champagne and two flute glasses.
Jordan – What's that for?
Sam – Drinking?!
Jordan – Already?
Jordan – Isn't early?
Sam – Not, it's not. Lose yourself.
Sam – Have a drink.
Jordan – Okay.
Sam pours two glasses of champagne. We drink it, start to talk about life.
As we're lost in our little chat, we haven't noticed that the champagne bottle is empty.
But soon we learn it as we feel a bit light headed.
Well mostly me. Sam can drink a lot without it affecting him.
The limo finally stops. The partition rolls down and Edmond looks back.
Driver – Have fun you two.
Driver (to Jordan) – And you Jordan you're going to have a good time I assure you.
Jordan – I'm looking for it and thank you Edmond for the ride.
Edmond – It's alright mon ami.
I loved hearing Edmond speak. His accent is so fancy.
Well he's from France, the country of fanciness right?!
We both get out of the limo and Sam leads me to a restaurant.
I'm almost tripping but I still can put on a good image.
It's Sardi's the most famous restaurant in New York.
Sam tells me to enter first and then he enters.
There's a man standing before a lectern with what I think is a list of names for tables.
Sam – Good afternoon.
Host – Good afternoon, how can I help you two?
Sam – Yes we have.
Host – Do you have a table?
Sam – I booked a table for two in the name of Sam Hastings.
Host – Oh I apologize to you sir.
Host – Come, come you're table is all set.
Host – Pardon me for not recognizing you.
Sam – It's alright sir.
The host leads us to our table and once again apologizes to Sam.
Jordan – What was that for?! Why was he apologizing?
Sam – Well I'm the son of Carter Hastings the CEO of the Hastings limousines.
Sam – And my name is not Sam.
Sam - It's just an abbreviation.
Jordan – So what's your name?
Sam – It's Samuel.
Sam – I'm named after that guy in the bible that helped the jewish people.
Sam – My parents are very religious.
Jordan – Well I'm surprised there's a lot of things I don't know about you Samuel.
Sam – Please it's just Sam.
Sam – I just didn't want to brag about my status.
Jordan – Okay Sam I see it.
Jordan – But go on, I'm sure there's more about you that I don't know yet.
Sam – I don't want to make this date about me.
Jordan – Oh I'll assure you, you won't.
Jordan – This date is about us therefore we have to know each other, right?!
Sam – You always have something to say.
Jordan – Yes, so now it's your time.
Sam – We'll order first.
Jordan – Okay.
I point to a waiter come to our table. He walks towards us.
Waiter – Good afternoon, my name is Julian would you like to order?
Jordan – Sure, well I want a Rigatoni and Califlower al Forno please.
Waiter – Okay noted, what about you sir?
Sam – Make two of it.
Waiter – And what would you like do drink?
Sam – What do you suggest for us?
Waiter – Dom Perignon it's the what everyone drinks in here and it's quite good actually.
Jordan – Great suggestion.
Jordan – I actually already drank it once because it was Marilyn Monroe's favorite champagne.
Waiter – Look behind you.
I look and there's a picture of Marilyn drinking champagne.
Jordan – Good marketing huh.
Waiter – That's what makes everyone order it.
Sam – I agree. Bring it then, and thank you.
Waiter – As you please.
The waiter leaves.
Jordan – This place is so cozy and so fancy.
Sam – Yes, I see you're liking it in here.
Sam – Oh my god please turn your head slightly to the left.
Jordan – Why?
Sam (mumbling) – Just do it.
I turn my head to the left, not slightly though and there's Bernadette Peters entering the restaurant.
Jordan – Oh my god, Oh my god I can't.
Jordan – Would you mind if I go reach to her?
Sam – I don't. I just hope you're successful in that task.
Sam – She's with her bodyguard and his face is not so friendly.
Jordan – I get it. But I have to try.
Oh dear god, it's Bernadette Peters. Broadway diva, one of the best female artists in the business.
I reach to her but her bulked bodyguard puts himself in front of her.
Bernadette Peters (to her bodyguard) – It's alright. It's just a fan.
Bernadette Peters (to her bodyguard) – What would he do to me?
Bernadette Peters – Hello kid. What's your name?
Jordan – Hello Miss Peters, I'm Jordan. Jordan Wright.
Jordan – I bet you hear this a lot but you're a big inspiration to me.
Jordan – You're amazing overall.
Jordan (lying) – I saw one show of yours in Gypsy on Broadway.
Jordan – Rose's Turn is my life anthem.
Bernadette Peters – Wow kid you're quite a talker.
Bernadette Peters – But you're ambitious, thank you for your compliments.
Bernadette Peters – So you're here alone?!
Jordan – No, I'm actualy on a date.
Bernadette Peters – So what you're doing here talking to me?
Jordan – I just wanted to talk to you. To try it and I made it!
Bernadette Peters – Go on, he's waiting.
Jordan – How do you know I'm with a guy?
Bernadette Petters – Well Jordan, he has been looking at us this whole time and your food already is on the table.
Jordan – Oh I'm so clumsy.
Jordan – Thank you Miss Bernadette. I love you.
Bernadette Peters – You're welcome.
Bernadette Peters – Go on, he's a keeper but don't let him lead you astray from your studies and goals.
Jordan – Thank you. He actually is a keeper.
Bernadette Peters – I long to see you out there.
Jordan – Thank you, thank you.
Jordan – I'm sorry to be a bother. Take care.
Bernadette Peters – Take care you too.
Bernadette goes with her bodyguard to a table and I come back to mine.
I'm almost blowing off this date.
Sam – So how was it?
Jordan – I'm screaming and crying internally.
Jordan – It was so awesome to meet the Bernadette Peters.
Jordan – But let's eat, I'm ruining this date.
Sam – I saw you glowing when you were talking to her.
Jordan – Oh was I?
Jordan – So how is your food? Are you liking it?
Sam – Yes, you have good taste.
Jordan – Thank you, this is my favorite meal and this champagne is like ambrosia for the Gods.
Sam – You talk so poetic.
Jordan – Hey, we were talking about you.
Jordan – I want to know more about you, Sam.
Sam – Well, my parents even though they are religious, they're pretty liberals.
Sam – They aren't fanatic religious people and they do agree that some passages from the bible are really wrong and not humanitarian.
Sam – My coming out wasn't really needed because they already knew from my early ages that I was gay.
Sam – They accepted me and instead of asking me if I was liking any girl in my teen years they just let me be.
Sam – The only thing they were more hesitant towards my choice in pursuing the filmography career.
Sam – They wanted me to be part of the Hastings Limousine enterprise.
Jordan – Wow that's really a lot.
Jordan – But you were so lucky to be accepted because of your sexual orientation.
Jordan – Do your parents support your filmography career now?
Sam – They are really liberals. And they do now.
Sam – They're even planning to come to my graduation.
Jordan – That's awesome. So you're only child?
Sam – Yes, but my parents are planning to adopt a kid from Asia.
Jordan – That's really nice. They're really good people.
Sam – They are. I would like for you to meet them in my graduation day.
Jordan – Oh okay, we'll see that.
Jordan – Baby steps. Remember?!
Sam – Right!
