Chapter Nine
Miles
I started the engine and got out of the parking lot. "Was she Elena?" Scott asked with a gentle tone.
"Yes," I confirmed as I was driving. "She wanted me to remind Frank about her exam payment. She received a warrant. I hate to put my little sister in a situation like this."
"Why didn't she tell him?"
"She's shy to remind him, and he forgot. I have to pass by tomorrow, and remind him." I sighed.
"It's not your fault Miles. You have to keep that in mind, and you have to be thankful each second for your uncle." He knows how to reassure me, but I couldn't contain the sighs.
"Jam your hype."
"I'm trying."
"Did you like Milia's friends? I felt you were happy."
"Yeah, they are nice. Their chemistry is funny."
"I agree. They are friendly. I saw your little talks with Milia."
"What about them?"
"You tell me." He said and I twisted my head to him.
"Fine, her vibes are different. I can't detect them, but they got me in a way or another."
"You like the vibes; you like the chick."
"I'm not dating until I stable in a job." I blurted.
"WOAH! Miles no we are not starting this again. I told you not to worry about money. I-"
I cut him off. "We are not starting it because we are going to Cuba to find a job. Right?"
"Right." He said still concerned. I wanted to rip my tongue for blurting it out. I believe I will never know how to hold my thoughts off him.
"Also I think you should consider Martin's offer. You understand cars, and it requires your major. It's on a silver plate." He explained and I nodded.
After a comfortable silent ride, we arrived at our apartment. We got in, and I threw my phone, wallet, and phone on the cupboard near the door. I stared at the keys; it's crazy how can someone detect a lot about you from a stack of keys and medals. Chloe assigned me because of the daisy chain, and now Martin is offering me a dream job. I glanced at the phone, thinking that I own the jersey now.
I got into my bedroom, changed to a t-shirt and shorts, then laid in bed. I held the phone and looked at it. Should I text her? Or should I wait until I come back from Cuba? Or when I decide between the two jobs? Or should I tell her that? "screw it," I whispered to myself, grabbing my mobile. I held it up my face and opened a chat room.
'The sweet chicken was tasty,' I sent the text. 'Your friends are really fun. Thank you for this day.' I closed the phone and put it on my chest.
After a while, it vibrated, so I checked it. 'Hey, Mr Speedy. I'm glad you did. You're lucky I forgot to mute the phone. I'm so tired I'll sleep and text ya later.' she replied. 'ok' I shut it.
"Hello baby girl," I said when Elena picked up my call.
"Hey, Miles. What's up?" She sounded so sleepy.
"Baby, are you in bed?"
"Yeah, I slept early because I had a bad day."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I was just checking. I will be quick."
"You don't have to be."
"Just tell Uncle Frank, that I'll be passing by tomorrow."
"Miles,"
"Yes, honey,"
"Can I ask you a favor?"
"Abso-freaking-lutely!"
"Can you come tomorrow when I am at the house... I miss you... terribly." She said and I felt her choking the words.
"I promise I will Elle. You are the most beautiful girl on this globe. Can you tell me how could I miss a chance to see you?" I said gaining no response. "You know you never get out of my head, and I'll be always by your side. Right?"
"Right."
"Fine, promise me to get your phone on mute, and to sleep tight."
"I promise."
"Elena, I love you."
"Me too. Bye," She said with a better tone and hung up. I hate we have to be like this. I hate that I can't hug her whenever I want to make her feel better.
I got off the bed, closed the lights, and went back in. A notification popped, so I checked it. 'I can't sleep.' 'Why sweetie?' 'I don't know'
I got out of bed, grabbed the car keys, and walked to the living room. "Where are you going?" Scott asked as he was talking on his phone.
"Elena." I walked out of the apartment and closed the door. I drove to Frank's house.
After pressing the pedal gas a lot, I arrived. I called her. "Get down," I told her as she picked up.
"what?" she asked.
"I'm at your driveway."
"WHAT?" She screamed.
"I didn't drive up here to get whats," I said, and she hung up.
After a few minutes, she burst out the front door. I got out of the car and seized her in my arms. "I drove all the way to get this," I spoke as I patted her hair. I felt her sobbing against my t-shirt.
"Baby what's wrong?" I held her shoulders and pulled her away, so I can see her face. She was starting to talk, but she sniffled and continued sobbing. "Hush" I held her back.
"I miss you, Miles. Every night everything flood back." She talked, but her voice was hazy as she was talking against my arm.
"Calm down. First, you don't have to give a single fuck about them. Second, I'm always here for you; a call away."
"I know."
"I don't wanna promise anything, but I'm getting a job, and who knows maybe things will get better." I gripped her tight.
After a while, she let go. "I love you." She said as I wiped her tears off her cheeks. "Frank is inviting you over, but I told him you are coming tomorrow." She added. "You now go to sleep, and I'll see you tomorrow." I kissed her forehead, and she walked back to the house.
