The story of free will is a strange one. Once, we had complete free will and could do almost whatever we want, in the times of the early man. Then, as civilization progressed, slowly but surely a co-operative form of society developed, which has now sapped our free will away from us by imposing many obstacles to keep us on a desired, straight path.

Now, some people would say that we are completely free, that we live in nations that have achieved independence, and are even democratic. But no, sir, such free will is just an illusion, our actual degree of freedom is far less than we perceive it to be.

The first obstacle to our free will is law. We must operate within the bounds of law, or else whatever free will we have will also be taken. Hence, crime is often not a viable option for anyone. Now, there are valid moral grounds on which law is based, but nevertheless you must agree that it reduces our freedom and free will to act as we please.

The next obstacle is money. Without money, we can't even partake food and water. And to earn money, one must work, or invest in dubious schemes. Thus, it is nearly compulsory for everyone to work, except those who are already quite rich. My free will says that I want to leave my job, but due to the constraint of money I must first look for a better one or start saving a tidy sum, else I would be unemployed and poor, which will make my survival difficult.

This continues further, as one can never free myself from requiring money without spending money as well. Even to farm for my sustenance, I have to buy land. Even for drinking clean water, I must set up purification systems. Even for cutting trees to build a wooden house, I must get an axe, or a permit to cut trees (in some places).

Think of all the things you can do if you don't have a penny in your pocket. Its a much shorter list than the one in which you have money. Its ironical, but one can say that money almost buys freedom. With enough money, I can go and live underground, away from this routine world. Or I could make my life aboveground far better; I could set up swindling shops (businesses), I could work as I please, and even drown a considerable amount of my savings in the casino without regretting it.

But you know what's the greatest constraint to free will, my dear readers? Its logic, and rationality. Now, how would that be, you may ask? Being rational and logical, is well, prudent, isn't it? Yes it is, but we don't follow the course of logic by our free will.

How so? Well, for example, you are offered three jobs with different pay. Logically, you will go for the highest paying one. But if that job didn't have the paying advantage, would you have went for it? Is it really the job you want to do? Indeed, people even turn down higher-paying jobs due to their loyalty to their current one, or their preference towards a lesser workload. Such people rarely, if ever, advance, and even then, only internally within their organization. Such a manifestation of free will is rare, as people seek advancement, which is logical, as it leads to rising level of incomes and more of that green. And thus, the logical action of working for a higher pay was actually an action that didn't originate from your free will.

Perhaps procrastination is a blatant, childish manifestation of our free will. Our mind says that it is logical and rational to work, and whatever is to be done must be done, but our free will rebels and says that it can't and doesn't want to do that work. Procrastination is the most common among teenagers, maybe because those are the 'rebel' years; the children are too naive and unquestioning, while the adults have gotten too used to working. Thus, I console myself, whenever I procrastinate, I exercise my free will.
