Chapter 6: Day 6

The next morning, Elena awoke with a sense of anticipation mixed with trepidation. The Discord social network conversation of her rehabilitation class awaited her, and she couldn't help wondering if she'd get any answers to her troubling questions. After a quick breakfast, Elena turned on her computer and logged on to her class's Discord group. She saw that several of her classmates were already online, discussing everything from the morning's weather to their upcoming homework.Conversations were lively, on topics ranging from homework to the latest K-pop song and the hilarious memes circulating online. Elena joined in the general conversation, interacting with her classmates and adding her own anecdotes to the discussion.

However, Emily, the blond, blue-eyed classmate who had mentioned Lilith earlier, had not yet entered the discussion. Elena joined in the general conversation, taking part in the morning banalities while watching for Emily's arrival.About thirty minutes later, Emily's name finally appeared on the list of online members. Elena felt her pulse quicken slightly. She wondered whether Emily would remember the conversation about Lilith or dismiss it as a simple misunderstanding.Elena decided to start the conversation gently, sending Emily a private message.

Elena: Hi Emily, how are you this morning?

Emily replied quickly, seeming to be in a good mood.

Emily: Hi Elena! I'm fine, thanks. How are you? How are you?

Elena: Not much, you know, routine. But I was wondering, last time we talked, you mentioned Lilith. Do you remember what I'm talking about? There was a moment of silence on Emily's side, then her answer appeared on the screen.

Emily: Lilith? I don't really remember what you're talking about. Are you sure it was me?

Elena felt a pang of disappointment, but she didn't want to give up so easily.

Elena: It's strange... you said something about Lilith and the cemetery. I thought you might have heard of Lilith's story. That's all.

Emily: Sorry, Elena, but it really doesn't ring a bell. Are you sure it wasn't someone else? Or did I say that in jest?

Elena began to feel frustrated, but decided to give Emily the benefit of the doubt.

Elena: Maybe I misunderstood. I don't mind. But if you ever hear of a strange story about the cemetery, could you let me know? I'm a bit curious about it.

Emily seemed to take Elena's request seriously.

Emily: Of course, Elena. I'll let you know if I hear anything interesting. In the meantime, if you need any help with research or anything else, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm here for you.

Elena felt relief mixed with gratitude towards Emily. Maybe she really didn't remember their earlier conversation, but she was ready to support Elena in her quest for the truth. This budding friendship was a beacon of hope in Elena's life.

Elena: Thank you, Emily, that's very kind of you. I'll keep that in mind. Perhaps we could have a video chat later to talk about it in more detail?

Emily agreed immediately.

Emily: Absolutely, that sounds great. When are you available?

Elena and Emily planned to meet by videoconference later in the day, in the early afternoon. Elena was feeling increasingly confident in her quest to discover the truth about Lilith, and she was grateful to have found an ally in Emily.

Having concluded their virtual conversation, Elena mentally prepared herself for the rest of her day, looking forward to chatting with Emily later and continuing to unravel the mysteries surrounding the cemetery and Lilith. As the afternoon wore on, Elena found herself looking forward to meeting Emily online to continue their conversation. The idea of seeing a friendly face on the screen gave her a much-needed sense of socialization. When the time came, Elena turned on her computer and connected to the videoconference with Emily. The two girls greeted each other warmly, their smiles appearing on the screen.Emily: Hi, Elena! I've got some good news about this Lilith thing.Elena was instantly intrigued. She tilted her head and stared at Emily.Elena: Really? Tell me all about it!

Emily: I dug a little deeper into the archives and found a strange story from the '80s. It had to do with the cemetery, the only thing in common with our current mysteries. It's about a murder, but the details are pretty vague. There's no physical description of the victim, only rumors that have been circulating for years.Elena was impressed by Emily's research skills. She wondered how such a quick-witted person could end up in a rehabilitation school. This raised many questions, but Elena decided to save that for another conversation.Elena: This is incredible, Emily! How did you come up with all this?Emily shrugged, trying to remain modest.Emily: Well, I've always enjoyed doing research online, even though I've been rather... anti-social since a certain trauma. But let's not talk about that right now.

Elena respected Emily's desire not to go into detail, knowing that everyone had their own demons to face.

Elena: I understand. Anyway, it's great that you were able to find this information. But, Emily, I don't think you should get involved. It's dangerous, and I don't want you to take any chances.

Emily shook her head determinedly.

Emily: Elena, I'm up for the adventure. If you and your cousin, Finn, are going to the library tomorrow, then I want to go with you. I really care about this story, and I want to help you as much as I can.

Elena bit her lower lip, a mixture of concern and gratitude in her eyes.

Elena: Are you really sure, Emily? I don't want you to put yourself in danger.Emily looked away from the camera, calling to her father in the next room.Emily: Daddy! Can I go out tomorrow morning to the library with some friends?Emily's father, clearly pleased to see his daughter so enthusiastic, replied positively.

Emily's father: Of course, darling! It's a great idea. It's great to see you getting back into the world. I'll give you a lift.

Elena was impressed by Emily's strength of will. She couldn't help wondering how such a dynamic, perceptive person could have ended up in this rehab school. It was a mystery in itself, and perhaps one day Elena would have the opportunity to ask Emily about it.Elena: Okay, Emily. If you're sure, I'd love to have you along. I'll see you tomorrow morning in the library.

Emily nodded, a confident smile on her face.Emily: It's a plan. I can't wait to continue this adventure with you.The conversation continued for some time, the two friends discussing their plans for the next morning and sharing laughs and ideas. Elena was grateful to have found an ally in Emily, someone willing to help her unravel the mysteries of the past.Having ended her conversation with Emily, Elena turned her attention to preparing the family dinner that would take place that evening. She knew her Aunt Gina and cousin Finn were coming, and that meant a lively evening. Elena went into the bathroom for a quick shower, feeling refreshed after a day of online discussions and excitement about their upcoming visit to the library. She dressed simply, donning jeans and a t-shirt, a predictable choice of clothing for her.

Elena's mother Mary was the first to arrive in the kitchen. She kissed her daughter on the cheek and asked her to put a little enthusiasm into tonight's preparations. They were well aware of the eccentric personality of their Aunt Gina, Corey's sister.Gina, the outgoing aunt, was quick to respond. She arrived with her son, Finn, in a flurry of color and sartorial exuberance. Gina had chestnut-blond hair and brown eyes, and these physical characteristics were strikingly similar to those of her son Finn. The genetics of Elena's paternal family were undoubtedly marked, but Elena herself had inherited nothing of her father's in terms of appearance.

Gina commented on Elena's usually predictable style of dress, encouraging her niece to have a little more fun and come out of her shell. She also referred to the lack of Halloween decorations outside the house, criticizing the lack of enthusiasm.

Gina: Elena, darling, you really should put a little more effort into your Halloween outfit and decorations. It's a fun party, you know!

She decreed by Gina's holy power that the family should decorate the house. She decided on her own to make an appointment for a family outing that Sunday: a pumpkin hunt in the pumpkin patch at the Halloway farm, 30 kilometers away. Elena knew that this outing would be yet another opportunity for Gina to add a touch of extravagance to their lives. The family capitulated without resistance to this announcement.

Finally, Corey, Elena's father, arrived after a few minutes, warmly embracing his sister Gina. It was shaping up to be a hectic family evening, between discussions about Elena's outfit and Gina's extravagant plans for the weekend ahead. Elena prepared herself mentally to deal with the family dynamics that lay ahead. The family sat down at the table to share a meal in good company. Elena, Mary, Corey, Gina and Finn gathered around the table, sharing stories and laughter. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed, with the excitement of the weekend's pumpkin hunt looming large. However, as they moved on to the dessert part, something strange happened. Elena noticed that her slice of pumpkin pie had mysteriously disappeared. She looked around, puzzled.

Elena: Wait, where's my pie?

A knowing smile spread across the faces of her mother, father, aunt and cousin. They all seemed to have taken part in a prank, but Elena didn't understand what was going on.Corey: Oh, Elena, your mind is really elsewhere. You ate your piece of pie a few minutes ago!Gina: Yes, darling, you were so engrossed in the conversation that you devoured it in the blink of an eye!Mary: That's right, darling, you must be distracted today.

Finn smiled mischievously, adding, "Maybe the Halloween spirits got hungry too!"Everyone burst out laughing, but Elena felt a shiver of worry run down her spine. She was sure she hadn't eaten anything, and she wasn't the type to forget to enjoy such a delicious dessert. An uneasy feeling grew inside her, but she preferred to keep her doubts to herself, not wanting to spoil the good mood of the evening.Elena: Oh, okay, maybe I was distracted. She tried to smile like the others, but perplexity and distrust were getting the better of her. Something strange was going on, and Elena wondered if she was the only one to notice.

After dinner, the evening continued with lively conversation and a few family board games. Elena tried to forget the strangeness of her pie's disappearance by immersing herself in the fun shared with her loved ones. But somewhere in the back of her mind, a worry persisted. Finally, as night approached, it was time to get ready for bed. Elena found herself alone in her room, ready to crawl into bed for a good night's sleep. However, as she was getting ready for bed, she noticed something unusual: it was incredibly cold in her room.

Elena rubbed her arms to warm up, but the temperature seemed to drop suddenly. She checked the thermostat, but it indicated a normal temperature. Yet an icy chill seemed to emanate from the corners of her room.

Worried, Elena got up to close the window. Maybe she'd left an opening, she thought. But when she checked, the window was completely closed. She shivered, feeling the cold penetrate her. Then she noticed a strange movement in a dark corner of her room. She made out a furtive silhouette, indistinct and fleeting. Fear seized her. She turned on the light, but no one was there. She convinced herself that her imagination was playing tricks on her.

However, even after turning off the light and going back to bed, the cold persisted. She tried to reassure herself that it was probably the wind or a heating malfunction. But her instincts told her something was wrong.

Closing her eyes, she tried to relax and banish the disturbing thoughts. Gradually, she managed to fall asleep despite the persistent cold. That night, however, her dreams were haunted by dark shadows and ominous whispers, and she awoke several times, overwhelmed by inexplicable anxiety. Something unusual was clearly happening, but she was not yet aware of the extent of these mysterious events.
