Season 1 Episode 1: The Vanishing of Will Byers
Wren Buckley POV
November 6th, 1983, Hawkins, Indiana
Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, and Will Byers are playing Dungeons & Dragons in Mike's basement. I'm watching them right now because all of their mothers, except Mike's because we're at his house but she still thought I could watch him not to get into trouble, collectively decided that I was the best babysitter for all of them. It's not a big deal for me though. I've known Mike's sister Nancy my whole life. When Mike was born I hung out with him by hanging out with his sister. Which means by the way that all the boys are connected by the hip that I've gotten to know the rest of them.
The boys' party in game is fighting a powerful creature known as a Demogorgon. Will, who's their cleric, is being pressured by Dustin and Lucas to choose between a safer protective spell or an offensive but way more dangerous fireball.
"I choose the fireball!", Will finally makes his choice but, in the process of rolling, knocks over the board and dice.
"Will I got it. You get the dice to see what you rolled and I'll get the board", I say.
"Mike it is time for your friends to go home, it is a school night. Wren is staying with Nancy tonight because she's responsible enough to not get into trouble", Mike's mother Karen explains. It's also because I stay here almost every night because my relationship with my parents isn't great. I only go back sometimes because of my two sisters, Robin and Olivia.
"We have some leftover pizza. Do you want it?"
Dustin tries to offer our leftover pizza to Nancy, who ignores him.
"You used to be cooler until you started dating that douchebag." He comments. All of the others (except Mike & I) agree.
By "douchebag" he means Nancy's boyfriend Steve Harrington. They've been dating for a little while and the boys have not taken it well.
"Dustin it's alright I'll just finish it. It's only a few slices" I assure him.
Before they leave, Will tells Mike that he rolled too low and the Demogorgon got him.
The lights in Mike's garage flicker as his friends leave but I think nothing of it because it's probably just an energy surge.
~ The next morning ~
Joyce, Will's mother, calls Mike's mother to ask if Will stayed the night, but Karen confirms Will left a little after 8:00 the night before and I could prove it if she asked because I was the one watching them.
~~~
At Hawkins High, Nancy's and I's other friend Barb asks about whether or not Nancy and Steve are dating, which Nancy denies. I know that's a lie though. Nancy finds a note in her locker from Steve asking to meet her in the bathroom, to which Barb smugly smiles. I know Barb because one of my sisters Robin used to be best friends with her until Barb left her for Nancy.
~~~
Over dinner, Mike begs his mother to let him search for Will, and Nancy asks to go and meet "Barb" to study, who I definitely know to be Steve and not Barb, but their mother says no to both requests. As Nancy and Mike argue, he reveals to their parents that she is dating Steve which causes Nancy to storm off. Mike also angrily leaves the table. I run after Mike. I'll deal with Nancy after because she's just being a drama queen about not seeing Steve even though she spends almost every waking moment with him unlike Mike who's got good reason of freaking out over Will being missing.
Mike calls Lucas on his Supercom. Mike tells Lucas that Will chose to put himself in danger during the game by casting a fireball instead of playing it safe by choosing the protection spell. Understanding what Mike is saying, Lucas says they should meet in ten minutes.
Mike and I sneak out on our bikes. We see Steve trying to climb through Nancy's window. Mike shrugs, I roll my eyes, and we ride off.
"WILL! WILL! WHERE ARE YOU WILL?! WILL! WILL!", all the boys minus Dustin yell.
"Come on guys a storm is coming let's go back home. We can come back later" Dustin shakily says.
"Dustin is right you guys. As your babysitter, I'm in charge of you all and your mothers would kill me if you got hurt under my watch", I say responsibly as the eldest one there.
"What was that?", one of the boys ask and the boys and I turn around. We see a bald girl around the boys age in the bushes soaked because of the rain.
