Chapter 71~ Calm Before The Storm

"Pancakes~" Gil cooed as he retrieved the maple syrup.

"Why do you always get so excited aboot pancakes? You could always just make them yourself," I questioned.

"But it's not zhe same zhat vay. I get excited because I get to eat zhem vith jou."

His reply made my face burn. Flipping the pancake to the other side, I felt him snake his arms behind me and hold me close. We were never too far part.

When the pancakes were done, I placed them on a plate and set them in the middle of the table. Gil didn't hesitate to eat with glee. I giggled at his overjoyed expression, he always manages to make me laugh. I made a plate for myself before sending one down for Kumakappa and a little serving for Gilbird.

"Hey Birdie?" Gil spoke.

"Hmm?"

"Do jou zhink zhat Little Birdie vill be at zhe party?"

"I'm sure that she'll want to attend. She is considered family after all. I wonder how she's doing... I hope she isn't getting into any trouble..." I pondered aloud.

"I'm sure zhat she's fine. She's a wanderer, but she alvays finds her vay home."

I was astonished at how true that was. I probably shouldn't worry about her as much. Olivine is a bright and cheerful girl, she seems to make friends wherever she goes. It's not like she's in Russia or anything dangerous.

After breakfast, we got ready for the day, pondered cosplay ideas, and ended up watching shows on Netflix. We were snuggled up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn in between us. Kumapoppoo was sleeping on my legs while Gilbird rested in Gil's hair as usual.

"What do you want to watch next?" I lifted my head up to speak.

"Hmm..." he scrolled through the titles. "Zhey have anime on Netflix?!"

"Yes, Netflix has almost everything," I stated nonchalantly.

He took a while to respond, "Do jou vanna vatch anime?"

Before I could answer, he read my mind and opened the anime section. All my favorite titles were displayed with bright colors and good ratings. He passed the remote to me so I could chose what we would watch.

FairyTail... Black Butler... Attack On Titan... Naruto... Death Note... Soul Eater-- wait!

"Have you seen Soul Eater?" I made up my mind.

"Nein, vhat is it about?"

"Madness. Witches. Weapons. Souls. Death. We are watching this now," I opened the screen with the list of episodes. But before I could choose episode one, a resemblance caught my eye.

"Hey Gil," I looked between the screen and Gil's face, "I never noticed how much you look like Soul."

"Who?"

"Soul Evans, he's a-- just watch and you'll understand," I didn't want to spoil it for him.

~ A few episodes later ~

"I know who ve should go as!" Gil's burst of energy started me.

"Who?"

"Maka und Soul!" The look on his face was unwavering. He was serious.

"Oh no, I am not wearing a skirt," I already knew that he wanted to be Soul.

"But only jou could pull it off!"

"Why can't I be Black Star?"

"Because he is like a ninja und zhey aren't partners."

"But I love ninjas!"

"Zhat's why jou can't be Black Star."

I huffed in frustration but he just laughed. I wasn't going to win this time. I finally gave in as Kumacockblock rolled off into Narnia.

"Fine, I'll be Maka. But only because I want to swing that scythe."

"Danke Birdie~" he nuzzled my face and I tried to pry him off.

"Alright, alright. Just let me breathe~" I giggled as he started tickling me.

"So adorable," he whispered before pecking my lips.

I grasped his shirt, pulled him in, and gave him a hearty kiss. He held me close as he deepened the kiss with close contact.

"Get a room you two!" Kumafuji called from the stairs.

We broke apart with giddy faces. Gil never let go of my person, we remained intertwined in each other's arms.

Oh maple, this is starting to sound like a cheesy romance novel.

~ Mini Time Skip ~

"Hey Gil?" I was resting in the bed while searching the internet for good cosplay prices. Gil was changing his shirt because Gilbird got a little sick and spit up on him. Poor little Gilbird.

"Ja?" He climbed over to my side of the bed.

"I've been wondering something..." I clicked to another website.

"Vhat is it?" he kissed my cheek.

"How come you always call me Birdie?" I turned to him with a thoughtful perfective.

He answered with his signature smile, "Because jou are adorable, soft, lovable, und jou alvays vake up first."

I could feel my face heat up from his words. I returned to my laptop to busy myself as the search continued on. It turns out that I don't have to wear a skirt, I forgot that there are male version of female characters and vise versa. I really didn't want to wear a skirt in front of everyone.

"Looks like I already have one part of my cosplay," I said aloud.

"Vhat part?"

"The pants. Matt gave me some plaid pants a while ago--" I quickly stopped myself before I said too much.

"Who is zhis Matt?" He repeated slowly.

"He's my 2p," I replied with ease.

Who has a major crush on me...

"Jou're friends?"

"Yeah, we're on good terms," My reply wasn't unwavering. I don't have feelings for Matt, I just don't want Gil to get the wrong Idea.

He brought me into his embrace to signal that he wanted snuggles. I happily fulfilled that request with a smile on my face. In the end, we searched and searched until we found everything that we couldn't make on our own. Some cosplay items just need to be bought.

I closed my laptop and exhaled throughly. Snuggling into my boyfriend's embrace, taking in his natural scent.

"Je t'aime..." the words left my mouth in a whisper.

"Hmm?" He looked to me.

I'm so glad that he didn't hear me clearly. However, he's more alert now. Oh maple... I wasn't ready for this!

"Oh, it's nothing!" I lied.

The disbelief was real. He wasn't convinced.

"Jou can tell me, Birdie. Vhat is it?" He urged.

I quickly came up with an excuse, "I... wanna call you something. You always call me Birdie, so I want to call you something..."

I sat up and tried to look away. My face must have been as red as a maple leaf. He trailed his hands up and down my arms to get me to spill the beans.

"Vhat do jou vanna call zhe awesome me~?" He cooed.

My heart skipped a beat and my body was too hot. With awkward words, I forced it out of my system.

"Can I... Can I call you... Pooh Bear?" My voice appeared inaudible.

Although, Gil's face was redder than my hoodie. I think I caught him off guard with my request!

"Ja... jou can..." he planted a kiss on my forehead, sending warm feelings all over my body.

I rested my arms on his shoulders as we drew each other closer. His crimson red eyes were like the morning sun, sending me warmth from afar.

"Pooh Bear?" I cooed.

"Ja?" His pink cheeks were visible from his pale skin.

My heart wouldn't calm down, "Je t'aime"

He gave me an expression as if he didn't understand.

"I love you," I translated with confidence.

His eyes grew wide before returning to their dreamy state.

"Ich liebe dich auch" he whispered, closing the gap with a melting kiss.

I didn't have to guess what that meant. But my heart wouldn't stop aching for some odd reason. My grip on him tightened as if he would leave me in that instant. I love him... I love this dork. I don't want anyone or anything to take him away from me.

But why do I feel so uneasy?

~ In Russia ~

*Olivine's POV*

After my bath, Toris realized that he did not have any clothes that fit my size. However, I did have other plans. When we were in a spare room, I told him to turn around for a short while. Then, I worked my magic.

If my clothes change with my forms, then I can manipulate that power. Maybe I can change into my Canadian form! I mean, my clothes did change on their own at one point...

With concentration and a focused thought, I could feel my clothes adjust. They were warm, soft, oversized, and held the scent of maple. When I observed my attire, my emotions went overboard.

"The Canadian is back!" I danced in a circle as Toris slowly turned around. He was astonished at my transformation.

My red hoodie with a white maple leaf printed on the front was comfortably resting on my upper half while new undies and matching shorts were set on my lower half.

"How... did you do that?" The look on his face was priceless.

"I h-have certain powers, I c-can't control them all, b-but they are a f-force to be r-reckoned with," I winked as I headed for the hall.

"I shouldn't be surprised, since Mr. England is your father..." I heard him comment from behind.

I wanted to explore this new place and see what wonders lie beyond every door. I also wanted to see where Ivan and Yao were. So~ I searched around for a while until Toris finally questioned my actions.

"Are you trying to find Mr. Russia?" He was spot on.

I nodded and threw my oversized sleeves in the air.

"He might be in the greenhouse at this time. Do you want me to show you the way?" He offered.

"Yes please~" I cheered.

He finally smiled. I witnessed the slightest blush that spread across his face as he lead the way.

Another victim of my cuteness! Bow down to me~! Hehe, I'm having way too much fun in my situation.

Toris happily escorted me down the hall as I trailed behind with joyful intent. He brought me over to a glass door that lead to outside of the house. I could see flower pots, bags of dirt, fertilizer, and many many sunflowers. Toris opened the door for me and called out to Ivan that I was in the Greenhouse. The room wasn't green itself, I'm not sure why they call this a Greenhouse... it's not even a house!

The walls of the greenhouse were caked in heavy frost and demanded to break in. They spread across the glass walls like hands, reaching from every inch and corner to try to find a way in. The whole area was like a huge maze of tall sunflowers. The temperature was quite cold considering the country that we were in. The temperature adjusting heat was barley making a difference, I could see my breath crystalizing into ice as it left my system. When I looked down, I found my prints in thin snow sheets that cushioned my feet on the hard floor.

If I stay any longer, I'll grow dormant again. I better find Ivan soon.

I found Ivan towards the back, surrounded by an abundance of sunflowers. However, not all of them were sunny and bright. Most of them were either frozen, withered, or dead. Ivan, being a very tall person, looked like a big ball curled up on the floor. He was holding one of the only surviving sunflowers that were left. He was embracing his knees in a corner and hiding his face from the world. He didn't seem to notice me as I drew closer.

"Ivan?" I spoke soft when I was in front of him.

He slowly looked up at me with saddened eyes. His scarf covered his mouth but caught his calling tears. Any child would have run away from his warding off presence, his eyes told a tale of pain and suffering. However, the only thing I saw was a deeply distressed, misunderstood person who was crying out silently for help. He never spoke a word, he just stared at me with broken eyes.

"W-Why are you cr-crying?" I tried once more, this time on my knees.

He looked away distantly before huddling back into his ball. I heard a sniffle and immediately leaned over to hug his huddled body. I felt him slightly jump from my sudden movement but settle himself quickly.

"Please..." he spoke with a weak tone. "I don't want to hurt you too."

I repositioned myself back into my spot, "Wh-What do you m-mean?"

He lifted his head up once more, "All of my sunflowers died... They keep dying and it's my fault. Everything I touch dies."

I'm sure that's not true. But of course they keep dying, they need a warm environment to thrive in. Why would you try to grow them in a freezing place like-- oooohhh I see what's going on here.

"Ivan," I stood up and toddled over to a wilting sunflower, "I w-want to show y-you something. It'll m-make you happy! I p-promise."

Ivan adjusted his position so he could observe what I was about to do.

Here goes nothing!

With the lightest touch, I tapped the leaves like morning dew. Instantly, the flower was showered with a glittering green glow that spiraled through its veins and petals. One by one, each brown petal turned into a welcoming yellow and awoke to a fantastic revival. It was now healthy, bright, and beautiful.

Ivan was starstruck and utterly amazed. His eyes were glowing with interest and happiness, his face said it all.

"How did you do that?" He breathed.

"My strongest power has to do with nature. Plus, England is my father," I stated proudly.

It almost looked like he blossomed himself along with the sunflower. He walked over to inspect the sudden revival and finally made a genuine smile. I held my arms up and out to him to signal that I wanted to be picked up. I kept my adorable grin to comfort him. However, he was hesitant to hold my small body. Making sure to give him a reassuring smile, I hugged his legs while gazing up at his towering frame.

With a reluctant sigh, he finally lifted me off the ground. His loose grasp was still active so I had to hold onto him tighter. My smile never faded as he grew more eased with my position. Slowly but surely, his hold on me was secure. I wiped his tears away and kissed his big nose to get him to feel better. Also, to do something really special for him.

"I feel... different," he commented.

"Touch a-another sunflower," I instructed.

He strolled to another set of withered sunflowers and reached out to touch the leaves. The magical process began again as it stood up tall and proud with bright, beautiful colors. He then proceeded to do the same with the rest of the live flowers.

"Oгромное спасибо," he said to me with gleeful eyes. (Thank you so much)

It took me a while to process his native tongue. However, it quickly clicked and I came up with the appropriate response.

"Добро пожаловать," I spoke back. (You're Welcome)

He was surprised, "You know Russian?"

"I u-used to, but y-you made me r-remember," I giggled.

His giddy expression made him look adorable. He had round chubby cheeks like I did and soft skin. I couldn't help but to pinch his cheeks and coo softly.

"You're so cute~" My childish laugh escaped.

"No I'm not..." he protested by hiding his face with his scarf.

"Yes, you are~"

"No, I'm not~" he held one of my hands with his free hand to get me to stop.

His large hand engulfed my tiny one entirely. I was so amazed by it that I hadn't realized that he was staring at me. When I looked to him, a fascination so great had intrigued him to cause a pink flush to overcome him.

"You're the cute one, Little Flower," he placed his big hand upon my head before pinching my cheek.

"I'm not cute..." I protested.

"Yes, you are," he chuckled.

"No, I'm not~"

~ Location: Unknown ~

* 3rd Person*

Gaia had traveled to the end of the Earth to avoid the unwanted from overhearing. There in a desolate wood, an underground temple made of mud and clay simulated the illusion of a cell. Paper talismans were draped all around the dimly lit temple to ward off the shadows and dark spirits that resided in the area. Down the dark hallway, sparking torches guided her to the lower premises where the sinister power should be present.

She trekked swiftly into the fortress that lay the force that disturbed her. The only sound was her unnerved breath, the crackling embers of aged fires, and her steps that climbed down into the depths of the shadows. Earlier that day, she had sensed a crack in the cell that she had created many, many moons ago. She implored the heavens that she was incorrect.

However, she was correct. When she came upon the tiny orb of infinite space that rested on the appropriate pedestal, she found the smallest fracture. The orb was created from her sheer power and desire to keep the universe from imploding on itself. The contents of it were unimaginable and too dangerous to release. If any of it escaped, not only would it affect the innocent countries, but the unsuspecting humans and life would be on the brink of extinction.

Gaia approached it carefully and used a spell to strengthen the bond that kept it from breaking. But what she didn't know, was that from eons of being locked up, the prisoner had grown stronger. Too strong for the spell to hold it back. Suddenly, the crack became a slash, and the slash became a gap. An explosion of dead air with a horrid stench emerged from the orb and disintegrated any remains that were possibly left.

It had escaped.

"Oh dear..." Gaia sighed as she readied her stance.

There were creatures of night surrounding her and thriving on the dim room. They swirled, twirled, and cackled through their sudden victory. It had been eons since they caught a whiff of Earthly air and the scent of human flesh. They were strong and they were starving.

They feed on the thoughts that you push to the back of your mind and rip them out like leeches. They'll turn your body cold with one touch while raping your innocent space. Many deaths and mishaps occur due to their notorious record. But that was eons ago, they weren't interested in silly games this time around. They wanted revenge.

"ɠı۷ɛ ųʂ ყơųཞ ɖཞɛąɖ..." They screeched like wailing hyenas, "shᎾᎳ us ᎽᎾuᏒ fᎬᎪᏒ..."

"I would never be afraid of the likes of you. You don't deserve my emotions," Gaia boasted her staff as she illuminated the dark.

They screamed from the sudden light. However, not for long. They soon bursted out in laughter at her foolish attempt to rid them. This caused them to rally, for thier screeching voices to echo throughout the temple until they found the morning light.

"Oh, no you don't!" Gaia threw down a barrier to pause their forceful charge. But it was no use. They shattered the barrier and morphed into one being. They were once a mess of shadow and dark, now they were one.

"ẇє һєѧяԀ ʏȏȗ һѧԀ ċһıʟԀяєṅ..." They rasped in interest, "!т'ᖱ ♭ḙ ᾰ ṧℏᾰՊḙ... ıʄ ʂơɱɛɬɧıŋɠ ɧą℘℘ɛŋɛɖ ɬơ ɬɧɛɱ. B⃟u⃟t⃟ l⃟e⃟t⃟'s⃟ n⃟o⃟t⃟ f⃟o⃟r⃟g⃟e⃟t⃟... ϯհεψ αɾε ɓαςϯαɾδ ɕհίʆδɾεη. w̸e̸'d̸ b̸e̸ d̸o̸i̸n̸g̸ t̸h̸e̸m̸ a̸ f̸a̸v̸o̸r̸..."

Gaia stormed out of the underground temple and lost her temper. That remark made her furious, on the verge of erupting. No one should ever call her children that. She sacrificed too much to receive those dreadful words.

"You will reap the day you came into existence," she gritted her teeth as she tossed uncentered sparks of magic. Tossing them wildly to hit the target that angered her.

It drifted away to feed on the hearts of the damned. She immediately clasped her hands together to send a prayer to her unsuspecting children. They would reach them before she could protect them.

"Show me how strong you are and fight! My darlings, please be safe..." that was the last thing she thought of before running towards the morning light.

Gaia had to have a talk with the force that took the reigns of her existence.
