Chapter 5~ The Voices...
"What do you mean, 'a very powerful magic'?" Al asked.
"Her magic capability surpasses even mine..." He paused as he tried to find the right words, "I didn't think that it was possible for such a small child to have this much power..."
As I looked at him with a confused look, my vision started to blur. Everything I saw turned double visioned and my head started to spin. None of my senses were working properly and I felt my body start to sway slowly. I heard someone say something, then everything went black.
~ Olivine's Dream ~
I wasn't in space like I was before. I was back in the forest that I once knew, but now... I knew what everything I once saw is. The bushes and leaves, the trunks on the sky-high trees, the strawberries and blackberries, and the soft green grass the cushioned me feet. This place felt so... safe, like I belonged here. But why would I feel this way?
"I told you that I'd return, Olivine..." The voice I once knew echoed from the trees.
'What happened? I was so magical, like a fairy or a nymph. My clothes changed and I felt so... alive. Then I just, blacked out...'
"You reacted with the magic in the rain water. That cool touch you felt, it felt like a drug to you, didn't it?"
'A drug? What's that?'
"It's an addictive substance that makes you feel good for a short time. It will cause you harm if you keep using it though..."
I looked around franticly for the source of the voice, I could hear it, but I can't see the person who was speaking it.
'Yes, the cool touch did feel good. So will I get hurt if I touch it again?'
"No, not right away. You can touch cold things, you just can't be exposed to them for a long time. If you are exposed, you'll..." The voice trailed off.
'What did you say?'
"..." The voice was gone.
'Hello? Where are you? What will happen? Hello?! Don't just leav--'
I was cut off by a burning feeling on my feet. The bright green, desolate forest turned into an angry amber fiery blaze. Leaves shriveled up and burned to a crisp before they feel to the ground. The ground became hot lava as I franticly ran to find a way out. Smoke swirled through the air and stringed my eyes, decreasing my eye sight.
After continuously telling myself not to panic, I found a way out. Although, I would rather be burned to death then have to do this. I came upon the River that I fell in once before, the same one with all the horrid screams and gory sounds. As I reached it, I stopped, knelt down beside it, and turned back. The fire was catching up to me, I would have no choice but to jump in. As I looked at the river once more, I gathered some courage, held my breath, and jumped in.
Without even the slightest warning, all the ignorant and execrable voices resounded in my head like a gong. The screams, the protests, the guns, the fights, the arguments... I heard it all. There was so much going on at once, I could only decipher the slightest bit I could retain.
"...Why?! Why does this have to happen?!..."
"...God... oh God!..."
"... The Twin Towers have fallen! I repeat! The twin towers ha--"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Mama?!... Mama!"
"...you have to save her! She's only a child! Save my baby! P-please, someone! Any--"
"Big Brother?! Big Brother!... don't go! Please!..."
"...what did we do to deserve this?... what did we do?!"
"...waaaa~ waaaa~ waaaaa~ waaa--"
"I can't... breathe... s-someone... h-h-hel-"
"God has given up on us..."
"...Deploy the nukes!"
"Okaa-san! Okaa-san!"
"...SAVE US!"
"Kill... kill me..."
"DEVIL! YOU KILLED MY FAMILY!"
"Rot in hell you bitch..."
"I hope the Nazis take you away..."
"Help, help, help, help--"
Muffled voices in different languages, loud explosions, steel swords, strong horses, small children crying for their parents... I can feel all of it, all the way down to the bottom of my soul. My dress ripped, my oxygen was cut off, my scars returned, my head was about to split open until--
I woke up.
~ In Arthur's room ~
A gasping breath left my lungs as I shot up in the bed. I looked down at myself to find that I was perfectly fine. My dress was back to normal and my scars were healed.
"Olivine!" Iggy exclaimed, "You startled me, are you alright? You blacked out and--"
He stopped mid sentence to address my new state. A sharp ringing in my ears echoed through out my world, intense pounding on my skull delayed my reaction time, and my hands were holding my head in an useless effort to make it stop.
"Olivine? What's wrong?" Iggy was barely audible to me, the ringing in my ears almost blocked out all of my sense of hearing. I barely noticed I was laying in his bed and he was sitting beside it.
"...mmm... my h-head... i-i-it hurts!... r-ringing... m-my ears..." I could barely hear myself.
I have no clue what Iggy did, but the next thing I knew, a warm feeling surrounded my body and the obnoxious ringing and excruciating pain slowly died down. I sighed in relief and closed my eyes, I'm so glad that that was over. Wait, what did he do?
"I took away your pain with a spell. The pain you were feeling was side effect from using so much magic power for the first time... at least I think that's the reason..." Iggy explained.
I looked at him and slowly smiled, it's nice to know that he knew what was going on... wait, magic? I know how to do magic?
"I-I-I... I kn-know magic?!" I exclaimed.
"Apparently... I'm still baffled myself. Olivine, were you aware of this before?" He asked.
I shook my head and thought deeply about this.
When did I learn how to do magic? Does this prove that I'm a country? Can countries do magic? How is this even possible? I wish that stupid voice in my head would just tell me everything! Why does everything have to be so hard?! Wait, enough about me, IGGY KNOWS MAGIC?!
"You're confused about me, right?" He said before I could question.
I nodded and I still can't wrap my head around all this.
"Yes, I can use magic. Not many people believe in magic or folklore beings like fairies or flying mint bunnies. I can teach you how to use and control your magic if you want." He looked down to me with an awaiting expression on his face.
"...o-okay" I answered.
I still can't take this in... it's all too much. First my weird dreams, then the voice in my head, now magic? Will unicorns rain from the sky to go have a rainbow rampage?!
"Here" Iggy brought over a small plate of sandwiches, just for me, "Francis made these, he wouldn't let me touch them..."
I laughed and took a sandwich. They were cut into triangles for me with the crusts cut off. I took a bite and my taste buds danced in joy. They were delicious!
"Mmmm!" Escaped my mouth.
I saw Iggy smile as he sat on the bed and scooted closer to me. He held the plate in his lap and I continued to chew happily. A little silence twirled through the room before Iggy broke it.
"Olivine, what were you dreaming about? You were talking in your sleep and I heard some... some disturbing things... It's okay if you don't want to talk about it." He questioned.
I held up a hand before he could continue. I swallowed and looked him in the eyes, to the best of my ability, and I went over my dream.
I told him about being back in the forest when everything was green and peaceful, about the voice in my head that occurs in my dreams, and about the conversation I had with it before everything burned to ashes. I paused before I said the rest, the part about the river and the voices...
"Was there anything else?" He asked.
I nodded and I could hear those cries coming back, as if they never left in the first place.
"... I j-jumped into the r-river and... they came back..." My stutter was slowly disappearing.
"What came back?" He pressed.
"The voices... the defiant cries and shouts that resound in my mind, the ear-splitting explosions and strident incoming airplanes. Blood crazy men on horseback, fighting with trained bows and arrows. Swords clashing, bones cracking, blood splattering, rapid gunshots, people choking, gasping for air... children crying for their mothers and fathers... the nukes and fires... blazing, chaotic fires. The chaos, the madness, the sudden waver of religion, the murder, the deaths, the continuous plead for death to be wished upon one another... The voices... the haunting voices of the dead... I heard them all... I heard them all..."
*Arthur's POV*
I was horrified. Horrified that she had a dream this traumatizing. A child this young should never have an experience like this. She was shaking all over in an unbalanced manner while trying to hold herself to calm down. Hyperventilation was creeping up on her and I pulled her into my arms, placing the plate of sandwiches on the nightstand beside me.
"Breathe Olivine..." I cooed, "I'm sorry I made you remember something like that. It's over now, just breathe Olivine, breathe."
Her breathing finally calmed down to a calming state. She clung onto my shirt and started shaking once more. I held her tighter and rubbed her back in comforting motions.
"No... no it's okay Iggy. I needed to tell someone about that..." She said, burying her face in my shirt.
And that's when I realized it, she doesn't stutter her words when she's scared. Which is ironic because usually a person would stutter if they're scared.
"Olivine... that river that you jumped into... was that the same one that we found you in?"
"...yes ... it's the same one. That's the reason why I'm afraid of water..." Her breathing was now back to normal, but since she's speaking clearly, she must still be scared.
I ran my fingers through her hair and kiss the side of her face, this caused her to blush slightly and almost forget her fears. She really does get embarrassed easily. For a long time, I just held her and comforted her until she felt safe again. I'm still confused as to where she got those scars on her, but I decided to not make her bring up anymore bad memories, I didn't want to break her.
Eventually, she tired herself out and fell asleep in my arms. She's going to need to sleep for a while to regain her power back. As I placed her down in my bed to get comfortable, I felt a slight tug on my shirt collar. Olivine wouldn't let go of me, no matter how gently I tried to pull her hand away, she just kept holding on. I just gave up and let her sleep on my chest, Alfred used to do this when he was little, so I learned that resistance is futile.
Tomorrow or later today, I'll meet up with Romania to help her control her powers. Plus, two heads are better than one when it comes to solving problems. He might have a clue to what kind of power she holds within her.
