When we finally reached the airport, Al parked the car and looked at me.
"Hey Matt?" He asked, never leaving my eyes. "Shouldn't we do something about her eyes?"
Mattie looked back at me and I began to feel a bit uncomfortable. It's weird having people stare at me.
"Hmm... you're right Al. It's not normal to have that kind of eye color..." Mattie said thinking hard.
"Wh-What's wrong with m-my eye color?" I asked with slight worry.
"Nothing! It's just... can you do something about it? We don't want people to become suspicious of you. Some people are quick to make assumptions and--"
"B-Bad things might h-happen?" I cut Mattie off.
"Yeah..." They said in sync.
"W-Well... how aboot I m-make them brown?" I said as I closed my eyes.
When I opened them, I asked them how they looked.
"Perfect!" Al commented.
"That's still my word," Mattie teased.
I stuck my tongue out in retaliation and he smiled.
~ lil' Time skip ~
As we said our final goodbyes to Al, we made our way into the large airport that was bustling with people from various places.
"Hold my hand and stay close to me Olivine, okay?" Mattie instructed as he held his hand out to me.
I took it and nodded happily. Holding onto the handle on my suitcase, we merged into the sea of people. Then we did a bunch of airport stuff that I still don't understand. When we finally stopped walking, Mattie stared up at a big electric message board that had a lot of numbers and words on it. It seemed to have flight times and names of places that I used know.
"Mattie?" I asked looking up at him.
"Hmm?" He looked down at me.
"H-How long is i-it to Canada?" I really wanted to know.
"It's aboot a six to seven hour flight, it's not long compared other flights."
"Seven hours?!" I exclaimed.
"It's not that long Olivine."
"Y-you don't know th-the time difference when y-your a kid," I retorted, narrowing my eyes at him.
Mattie ignored my remark and we made our way to some seats. As we sat down, Mattie pulled out a slim looking device. It had a black screen, a case with his flag on it, and a round button towards the bottom. When he pressed the button, the device came to life. A picture of him and another man with albino white hair and red eyes flashed on the screen. Then he swiped the screen, pressed some numbers on the screen, and... did something that I can't really explain.
"W-What 'cha doin?" I asked peering over.
"Checking when the flight is supposed to leave." I was still a bit confused...
"... W-What's that you're h-holding?" I pointed to the device.
"It's called an iPhone. You can to a lot on it, like make calls, text, play games, use the internet... and lots more." He explained.
"O-Oh... Mattie? What's th-the internet? And what's t-texting?" I curiously asked.
He stayed silent as he tried to think of a simpler way explain this to me. I can tell that I'm missing a lot of information here.
"Well..."
~ Aboot an hour later ~
"A-Are we late?!" I exclaimed.
"No..." He said as he checked his iPhone. "I did get the time wrong, but we were just an hour early."
"Awe~!" I whined hanging my head low.
"Sorry Olivine..."
"I-It's okay... t-time measurement is weird," I pouted.
Noisy silence swam through the air as one of us tried to find a conversation.
"S-So when are we s-supposed to leave? And... how e-exactly do we get to Canada?" My questions filled the air.
I never really asked what an airport is for. Or how an airport is supposed to get us Canada.
"Our flight leaves at one o'clock and it's twelve o'clock now. Also, look behind you."
I did what he said and the sight took my breath away. Out the window, Large... planes? Yeah, planes, were neatly lined up outside, ready to take off. Mattie pointed to a far away plane and we watched it lift off the runway and into the air. I sat there in awe at the large aircraft.
How could something so big fly with that much weight? It's incredible!
As I turned back around, a... family? Yeah, a family with two young children walked passed us in a hurried manner.
"Hurry up or we'll miss our flight!" Grumbled the man who was holding a girl's hand. The girl looked to be about my age.
"Why didn't you tell me that we were at the wrong gate?!" Complained the overly stressed woman who carried a smaller child.
Mattie and I didn't pay much attention to them. Then the little girl cried, "Usa-chan! Usa-chan! Daddy I lost Usa-chan!" She tried her best to get her father to stop walking. She obviously wasn't leaving without Usa-chan.
"We can get you another one once we touch down, now come on!" Her father all but reassuringly stated.
The girl started to cry as something clicked in my head.
Usa-chan? What's an Usa-chan? Usa? Usa...gi? U... Usagi! Usa-chan! Usagi means rabbit! She's looking for her toy rabbit!
Then, as if it was a sign from God, a pink stuffed rabbit with big ears caught my eye. It was under a seat that was not far away from me. Unknowingly, I sprang into action without hesitation, I leaped from my seat, grabbed the rabbit, held it close, and dashed off to return it to it's distressed owner.
I heard Mattie call my name, but now's not the time to hesitate. Like a fox, my legs swiftly weaved through the obstacles of impatient people, rolling suit cases, and wandering children. Just as the family was about to go through the gate, the girl caught my approach.
"Usa-chan!" She happily exclaimed, wiggling from her father's grasp.
She ran up to me and basically tackled me to the ground.
"You found Usa-chan! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" She hugged the living day lights out of me as I placed Usa-chan in her arms.
"N-No problem, it's b-better to see y-you smile anyway. Usa-chan would be sad if you w-were separated too." I said as she released me from her grasp.
"My name is Paige! What's yours?" She asked cheerily.
"I'm--"
"Olivine!" Mattie somewhat yelled as he caught up to me. "Don't run off like that!" He panted.
"Olivine?" Paige said, "You're name is cute! Well, maybe I'll see you again some day! Bye!" She waved as she ran back to her parents.
As Mattie apologized to them, he picked me up and scolded me some more. When we finally made it back to our seats, I had a lump on my head.
"I'm s-sorry Mattie, I won't r-run off again... I promise..." I cried.
He sighed and looked at me, "I forgive you Olivine. But you really scared me."
He paused as he found more words, "What you did was brave, eh? That little girl seemed really happy."
I looked up at him as my face lit up. Even though he was mad at me, he was still proud of me. Funny how things work out that way.
~~
We're finally on the plane now and I got what Alfred calls a window seat. As more people piled in, I got comfortable in the soft blue seat I occupied. Mattie was putting our suitcases in the storage thingy up top as I realized something, I was wearing my red hoodie that Mattie gave me. But I was sure that I packed it in my suitcase...
Mattie realized it too when he sat down next to me. We just looked at each other and thought of the same thing.
Magic
I've come to the conclusion that I can't control some of my magic. I just hope that I don't randomly change clothes while a human is watching... that probably wouldn't be good.
"Olivine," He was so quiet that he didn't need to whisper, "Eyes."
I gasped and shut my eyes, when I opened them, He simply nodded and sat back into his seat.
"Are you ready?" He asked.
"Y-yeah... maybe..." I didn't sound so convinced.
"You'll be fine. Although, your ears are going to feel like they're closing up when we're in the air. But that's normal." He reassured.
I sheepishly smiled and looked out the window.
Will I be above the white fluffy things in the sky? What will be waiting for me in Canada? Will his house smell like pancakes? I think it will~
~~
When it was time for take off, Mattie helped me buckle up and he held my hand. When the plane reached the end of the runway, I looked out the window and saw the airport get smaller and smaller. When I looked back at Mattie, he was still holding my hand as he gave me a reassuring smile. I wasn't scared at all with him next to me. He kissed my forehead and said this into my ear:
"I told you you'll be fine."
Then I looked out the window to see that we were above the cotton balls of the sky. A smile tugged at my face as I examined the sky.
"The sky looks so different when you're above the clouds, eh?" Mattie commented as his face appeared next to mine.
That's when he realized something else, Mattie was still holding my hand. Even though we were already in the sky. I even felt him squeeze it. I think they just like to play with my feelings. I just hope that he can't see my face right now, I probably look like a stoplight.
~ Three hours in ~
"I-It's been three days~! Are w-we there yet?" I complained.
"It's only been three hours and not yet." Mattie answered.
I laid my head back into my seat and listened to the conversations of the other passengers. We were free to move around since we were in the air and everything was fine. But boredom had hit me like a rocket launcher and it didn't help that a baby was crying loudly in the seat behind me. The mother was trying her hardest to calm it down, but nothing was working.
Mattie looked at me and saw my annoyed face. He mouthed the words 'sorry' as I brought two fingers together. Then I snapped my fingers and waited. Miraculously, the baby slowly quieted down, and fell asleep. I exhaled and closed my eyes, finally able to have some quiet. Then realized hit me again as I opened my eyes.
I just quieted a baby with the snap of my fingers...
I looked at Mattie's surprised expression and put a finger to my lips to signal to not say a word.
"Magic?" He mouthed.
I nodded and leaned back into my chair. My eyelids became heavy and I drifted off to sleep.
~ Thirty minutes later ~
I awoke to someone screaming. Mattie calmed me down and told me what happened.
"It's okay Olivine, there was an overly drunk lady from first class who was frightening the other passengers. The Air Marshals are taking care of it."
I sighed and smiled at him. At least nothing was really wrong. I looked out the window for a second before I quickly shut the shade. Maybe too fast because Mattie gave me a questionable look.
*Matthew's POV*
I heard the window shade quickly shut beside me. I looked at Olivine with a questionable expression.
Why did she do that?
I pushed up the shade and looked out the window. It was a clear sky, you could even see the ocean below. There was nothing out there, so why does she look scared?
"Olivine?" I asked, "Did you see something?"
She held herself and looked away as she spoke, "The water..."
I looked outside once more and it hit me.
She's afraid of water? Why didn't she tell me?
"Olivine... why didn't you tell me that you have Aquaphobia?" I asked, getting close to her so no one else could hear.
"Is that fear of water?" She asked with perfect speech.
"Yes, it is." I confirmed.
"Well... only Iggy knows... I guess I forgot to tell you. It's a long story how I got it and... I don't want to talk about it here..." She answered as I pulled down the shade.
"I understand--"
"Mattie?" She asked with a look for guidance.
"Yes?"
"The plane's not going to crash into the water... is it?"
"We're not going to crash Olivine, where did you get an idea like that?" I was starting to get a little concerned.
"...I have a bad feeling..." Her perfect speech remained.
"I'm sure everything's going to b--"
Then the lights flickered before they finally went out. The other passengers started to worry as others waited for the lights to come back on. But something didn't seem right, for it was dead silent.
Five minutes passed.
Darkness, silence.
Ten minutes passed.
Darkness, silence.
Fifteen minutes passed.
Darkness, screaming.
Then, we were all forcefully lurched forward without warning. I thankfully caught Olivine before she could get any injuries. I buckled her in before I did the same to myself. All the other passengers seemed to have done the same as they tried to calm down. Soon after, everything seemed quiet.
However, Olivine screamed. And when I looked out the window, I noticed how fast we were approaching the water.
