Chapter 1-The Origins
Katerina Kolosov's POV
Two years ago.
I walked around the room smiling at guests who wished me happy birthday. I was sixteen today and well, mom and dad had thrown a birthday party for me at our home. My parents were out for the night at a hotel and I really didn't want to know what they're doing there.
At that thought, I shuddered in disgust and breathed out a sigh of relief that my siblings were over their friends' house for a sleepover. The only reason why my parents allowed me to have a party was that I had supervision from my Uncle Grayson. He was my dad's brother and he was my favourite uncle.
Uncle Grayson was pretty laid-back about certain things and well, he may seem really friendly but he could turn menacing in just a second. That was most probably the reason why my parents had let me throw a party.
"Katerina, is everything alright? You are just walking around in circles." An accented voice sounded out and I turned around to see my uncle peering at me.
I gave him a broad smile. "I'm fine. I'm just looking for someone." I said casually as I tiptoed and looked around. "A boy?"
I gasped and turned around to deny it and my uncle nodded his head, "Do not lie. I know it when I see it. Don't worry, I won't tell Sebastian. God only knows what he would do."
I beamed and threw my arms around him, "Thank you! I love dad but he can be really overbearing." A small smile cracked onto Uncle Grayson's face as he patted me on the back, "That's why you should be grateful for your mother."
I opened my mouth to respond but my uncle cut me off with a stern look, "Enough talking to your old uncle, go enjoy your party but if one hormonal teenage boy touches you-"
"I can handle myself you know that." I gave a reassuring grin and my uncle nodded his head, "I am aware of that but I am you uncle and your guardian for tonight, thus it is my responsibility. Now, I'll go check on everything and you would continue mingling with your guests."
With that, he patted me on the back before disappearing into the crowd. I straightened my back and smoothed down my green dress before continuing to talk to the people from school.
After making small talk with one of the girls from my cheerleading team, I headed towards the foyer when I caught sight of the tall blonde figure heading towards me.
Immediately, a scowl slipped onto my face and I crossed my arms as irritation and annoyance started.
"Why the frown Katerina? Nervous?" He asked casually as he sipped something from his glass. I scowled at him before tossing my hair behind my shoulders.
"Nothing. And I'm not nervous, I just don't like you." I announced and an amused look entered Raphael's blue eyes.
"Hmmm, I might have to rectify that. After all, we're family friends are we not?" He smirked down at me and I scoffed under my breath at his charming tone.
"Yeah no. You're just my best friend's brother. And our parents are best friends. That is all. We are not friends. And excuse me, I have to talk to my other guests." With that, I did a dramatic turn and walked off leaving the golden haired idiot behind me.
Bloody Raphael Doukas. I had known him since I was a baby and you might think that us knowing each other since we were kids meant that we would be best friends or something like that, but no. We were rivals and I couldn't stand him with every fibre of my being.
I thought he was a total charming jackass with a sly tongue, able to get anything he wanted. And well, I didn't know why but I just didn't like him. He just rubbed me the wrong way. Actually, perhaps the more appropriate term for what I felt for him was not dislike but pure resentment.
But it was too bad that he was my parent's godchild. Thus, I had to be at least civil to him. I scowled deeply at the thought of him before straightening my back. What was I doing? Letting him ruin my birthday party? No way in hell.
I plastered on another smile and turned around to see Lexi crash into me. "Kat! Oh god. There you are! I've been looking for you everywhere!"
And this was the reason why I had tried to tolerate Raphael. His younger sister, Alexandria Doukas, also known as Lexi was my best friend. Albeit a year older than me, we had clicked. In fact she was only a few months older than I was.
"What? What's going on?" I questioned and Lexi shook her head, her pretty blue eyes lighting up. "They're going to give you a toast. And Lane Keaton is here. He just arrived." She tossed me a smug grin and I tossed my curls behind my shoulder. "Okay. Let's go."
I exhaled deeply and asked seriously. "Fine. I look great don't I?"
Lexi rolled her eyes but a hint of a smile crossed her face, "You look perfect Kat. You always do. Now go!" I toned down my expression before heading steadily to where Lane Keaton was.
He was the hottest senior in high school and there were news that he and his long-term girlfriend Kendra had broken up recently.
And obviously, it was an opportunity not to be missed. I pushed back my shoulders before sauntering among the crowd in the backyard and abruptly stopped when the sight of Lane kissing Kendra met me.
I gulped down the feeling of being punched before walking back into the house. What. The. Fuck.
Without thinking, I headed towards my room and gulped down as much air as I could. What the actual fuck? Buffy, my dog curled up beside me and unconsciously, I stroked her head as I tried to come to terms with what I saw.
The door opened and Lexi peeped in. "Oh Kat. I heard." She says sympathetically and enters. I sigh, not saying a word. I wasn't one for discussing feelings.
"I mean who knew he was so dumb to get back with Kendra after she cheated on him." Lexi says as she sit beside me and places a bottle of wine and two glasses in front of me. "But, I brought this to cheer you up! And we can drink it together-
Reaching out, I opened it with a corkscrew before drinking directly from the bottle. "Or like that." Lexi finishes and I slumped against the head of my bed.
"Boys suck." I grumble and Lexi sighs. "Well yes they do." I became silent and drank from the red wine again.

"Ohhh my goooood!" I shout as I danced around in the crowd.
"What?!" Lexi shouts back and I hollered. "I'm having so much fun!" I yelled and Lexi exploded into giggles as she continues dancing with a guy.
Looking around, I turned to see one of the girls behind me with a beer in her hand. Without thinking, I took it from her, ignoring her protest and drank.
"I think that is enough isn't it?" Looking up, the tall blonde stood as he shot me a narrowed gaze.
I rolled my eyes, "Oh fuck off. Tell that to someone who cares." I groan and shove the beer into his hand. "There." With that, I stalked out of the crowd and into the backyard to be alone. By now, everyone was in the house partying away as the weather was getting colder by the minute.
Bloody Raphael Doukas and his nonsense. Ugh! I scowled and it wasn't until a hand grabbed onto my shoulder that I turned around.
There the idiot stood in front of me with an amused expression in his eyes but his jaw was clenched and his mouth was pressed into a thin line.
"I've been watching you drunk and dancing with almost every guy there with Lexi for the past two hours. Of course I would say that you had enough."
I scowled and crossed my arms, "What does all this have to do with you? The last time I checked, you were nobody!"
Raphael narrowed his eyes at me and I tilted my head up defiantly. Just because he was hot doesn't mean I would simply listen to him.
His blonde hair was as usual in a disarray, he never bothered to style it, but left it all messed up. His cheekbones were prominent and his baby blue eyes were staring me down. Even though he was only nineteen, he was tall and had some stubble on his jaw.
He was dressed well, his blue buttoned up shirt complemented his blue eyes and the sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, the top part of his shirt was left unbuttoned and his dark jeans made him look deliciously sexy as they cupped his butt. A black tie hung loosely around his neck that finished the look.
"Katerina, you are only sixteen and drinking way too much and as a family friend, I would have to put a stop-"
Up till now, I didn't know why I had done that. But all I knew was that his lips were so kissable and that he was talking too much. Maybe it was the alcohol in my system but without thinking, I grabbed his tie and pulled him down, "You're talking too much."
And with that, I kissed him.
Raphael was too stunned to react when I moved my lips against his. But I guess the feel of me pressing against him made his male instinct kick in and soon, his hands were on me as his lips moved against mine hungrily.
This was of course not my first kiss but it was the best I've had. His lips were soft and his hands felt nice on my hips. My hands snaked up to his head and ran through the soft blonde strands of his hair.
The kiss took a fiery turn where his tongue entered mine and he slanted his mouth against mine as he kissed me roughly.
It wasn't long before his hands moved to my hips and then to my butt as he ground himself against me. I let out a little moan as I ground myself against him, enjoying the way he felt against me.
Soon enough, reason and logic crashed into my mind and I quickly pulled away. How could I have forgotten everything? He was my best friend's brother and we set in my house where anyone could see us!
I stared up at him in shock. Raphael's blue eyes were dark from lust and he looked down at me as if I was a baby deer and he a lion. His plump lips were a little red and swollen and the moonlight shone on his face, highlighting the planes of his cheekbones.
"I-that was a mistake." I burst out and moved out of his embrace. I quickly patted down my dress and ran my fingers through my curls making sure everything was in place.
"Katerina." His low voice warned as I turned to leave. I glared at him and snapped, "Shut up! Nothing happened alright? Lets just forget it!" With that, I hastily left the backyard and headed back into the house trying to forget whatever that just happened.
I scrambled up to my room and stopped to see Roman carrying Lexi into mine and for a moment, I nearly freaked out because I thought it was Raphael and not Roman.
"Sorry, Lexi is a lightweight. Good to see that you're still holding up." Roman remarked and I nodded as I tried to calm my racing heartbeat. "Yeah, I'm part Russian." I answered and Roman places Lexi on my bed before giving me a broad grin.
"Happy birthday Kat." He wishes and hugs me. "Thank you." I mumbled back, still stunned by the kiss that had happened earlier.
I didn't know why I just didn't like Raphael, Roman was like an older brother and his girlfriend was like my other sister. I guessed it was just something about him that put me on edge.
With Roman gone, I was left alone in my room with only my thoughts for company and a passed out Lexi. I couldn't believe I just kissed Raphael Doukas. That was the biggest mistake I had made. Panic rose and I exhaled deeply and shut my eyes.
The only thing I could do about this was to pretend that this kiss did not happen. Right! That is what I'm going to do. I straightened my spine and determination set in.
And that was how everything started.
