Chapter 27. Ring of Fire

A/N & Trigger Warnings:

Long time coming so sorry for the wait new chapter is nearly complete already

TW** Smut, Violence and blood

Evelyn

The earth crunched beneath my feet as we walked towards the crumbling city centre, in search of Thanos and his army. To end this horrible part of my life once and for all. Or perhaps to just find our end.   My knees trembled with each step forward that I took. The adrenaline that had pumped though  my veins because of the portal jump was now worn off and left me with a splitting headache. I tried so hard to hold back the well of emotion that swelled within me, emotions that were begging to be let loose.

I couldn't allow that, not here. I would not lose myself to that.

I had to let Thaw take control.

"Hey," James walked behind me to my left. It was as though he could tell that I was on the verge of some sort of switch.

I looked over my shoulder and met his hard eyes. "I'm ok." I said anticipating his next question without him speaking it.

He nodded curtly.  I knew he did not entirely believe that I was fine, but he already knew better than to call me out explicitly because of it. I think I loved him all the more for it.

"What exactly are we looking for here?" Steve interrupted from where he stood beside James flanking my right. His sharp eyes were darting all around. I turned to him and his gaze flashed to my own, deep worry etched between his brows, "I can't help but feel like we are about to walk into something that we are not ready for."

My own eyes darted around, and I couldn't help the enormous feeling of dread that washed over me as well. It was quiet. Too quiet. The army that had been situated here for all of the years that I had been running from Thanos and his goons was gone.  There was no dust on the horizon, no smoke from cook fires, no cries from prisoners or anything of the like. I narrowed my eyes, looking up to the night sky. There was not even a space craft in the sky. Thanos's giant ship included. "I don't know." I said finally agreeing with him, "But I think you're right, something is up."

As if on cue there was the roaring of a ship in the distance and James shoved me into the space between two crumbling buildings. "Stay low." His voice growled in my ear as he moved closer to me.

All at once there was a cacophony of sound, more and more ships followed the first abruptly entering the atmosphere where they looked like a swarm. The stars were no longer visible above, just the lights and roaring engines of his army. The fleet was returning from wherever it was they had been, wherever that Thanos had needed all of his ships, all of his soldiers. A sudden lump formed at the back of my throat. Nothing good could come of this, I had never seen him move all of his ships before, what was it that had needed his entire attention. I couldn't help but think it had something to do with me.

Steve hissed, "Do you hear that?" He looked at James over my head and James nodded. I had heard it too. The ponding sound of countless heavy footfalls trudging over the land. Thrumming like the beat of a war drum, this was the sound of the entirety of his army returning. They were far enough away that we should be able to find somewhere to hide ourselves as they made it passed us and back to the camp.

I found myself being pressed into the ground a strong hand over the back of my head holding me down. "Stay down," it was James's soft voice in my ear, "I've got you." I could feel the pounding of his heart as he pressed himself into my back. I couldn't help but desperately wish that we would never have to be in this situation ever again after we left here.

If we left here. That weak voice in the back of my head spoke to me again. Questioning me for the thousandth time that day as to if we made the right decision in coming here in the first place.

"Are you ok?" Steve asked his voice now so close too, and I realized that he had lain his body over mine and James's as though if anything were to happen, he would shelter us both.

My heart ached.

"I'm ok." I said at the same time as James blurted. "Yeah."

I felt the weight lessen from my back as Steve moved from us and my heart skipped a beat when I felt James bury his face into the crook of my neck inhaling deeply before he moved off of me. I couldn't help the coy grin that spread across my features as I too stood careful to keep hidden behind the outcropping of downed buildings that had hid us from the ships that flew in overhead. James reached out and slipped his hand in mine squeezing it gently.

"So, this is it." Steve said, it was not a question, "This is what Thanos has chosen to do here?" I could feel the anger in his words the condemnation, "He has chosen to torment this world, and whoever remains in it just to torture them because his plan did not go like he wanted."

I clenched my teeth. I had always thought that Thanos was deranged but now I was more certain than ever because the truth was so plain to me, more than it had ever been before. Thanos terrorized this world because I had taken The Stones. I had taken away his so-called flawless victory and now he sought the remnants of the Infinity Stones that blazed within me like an inferno. Whatever the intricacies of his plans, I needed to stop them. I needed to make sure that this Thanos could not rain his torture down on anyone else and he met the same end he met in the other world.

"So, what now?" James asked. His body flush against my own.

I opened my mouth to speak but Steve spoke before I could, "I think we should wait. We need to make sure that Thanos is actually in the camp. There is no point in going in there if we don't know that the other Infinity Stones are there."

I knew that he was right, I knew that he was talking sense but at the same time I was so eager to get in get out and get back home.

"What happens once we get The Stones?" I asked not certain I wanted to know the answer.

Steve's jaw ticked as though he didn't want to say what he was thinking, "One step at a time," he said darkly.

I frowned, "We need to destroy the Stones." I felt fire in my soul, "No matter the cost."

"No," my eyes swung to James whose eyes were alight with fury, his tone to match.

I squeezed his hand in mine again, "That is why we came here."

I let the ramifications of my words settle between us, what more could be said. I just hoped that what Strange had discovered in Mordo's palace was enough to get us all out of here alive.

I let my eyes move from Steve to James, "So, Winter Soldier what is our plan?"

He looked just shocked at what I'd asked him.

Steve's shoulders tensed when I'd used James's old moniker, but I knew in my soul no matter how much he wanted to forget about all of the things in his past that the only person who could help us now would be The Winter Soldier.

So did James.

He pulled his fingers through his now short hair more out of habit than to actually push the hair that was no longer there out of his eyes. I could see the surprise on his features as though he was not used to people differing to him. I tried to smile warmly because I knew that this man had been through so much, so much violence and so much battle he had to see a strategy, he had to have seen something that neither Steve nor I could.

The line between his brows deepened and for a moment I wondered if he would speak at all. For a long minute he was so silent. I thought that he would turn away from me or say something that I didn't want to hear. His eyes were bright as he peered around the collapsed structure towards the camp. He took a deep breath, "I think that if we wait like Steve suggested it will only be a matter of time before we are found."

Steve opened his mouth to argue but I held up my hand so James could finish.

"Thanos, the Thanos that we knew was always ten steps ahead of us. We have to be prepared for anything." His words were like a knife piercing my soul, "And I mean anything. We know that there are already people from this world that have been looking for you and we can only expect more to come." He stepped closer his hand sliding up to cup my face, "We need to stay ahead of him, we need to catch him by surprise not the other way around."

I squeezed my eyes closed and nodded. I could do nothing else but hope that he understood that I trusted his words almost more than anyone else's.

Steve stepped closer and pulled us down into a crouching position out of sight behind the rubble. "I think you have a point, Buck."

I nodded along with his words.

Steve continued, "I think we need to be careful though. I have a feeling we will have no problem getting in but getting out will be a different story all together.

James nodded, "They will try to separate us once we are found out, there is no way it would be in there best interest to do anything otherwise."

I nodded along with them Thaw's persona slipping into the forefront, "They've had the opportunity and the means to keep this place as their homebase since the blip." I said adopting the word that they used to describe the events of the snap in their world. "They have been trying to get to me since then. Thanos obviously knew there were fractured stones within me long before I did. He will do everything to get them back. I had my husband to keep me safe here before and now I have both of you, there is no way he will get what he wants."

There was silence for a moment before Steve moved to his knees before me his voice somber and careful, he grasped a lock of my hair between his gloved fingers, "Are we in for any surprises?" he asked his voice soft.

I shrugged with a sigh, "I would say no, but honestly at this point I have really just learned to expect the unexpected."

James grunted. He moved himself closer to press his body against my back, his arm wrapping around my waist settling me onto my knees my calves slipping between his knees, his thighs pressed into mine when he settled his face into the nape of my neck again. Steve pressed closer his body flush against my front. Steve tipped his forehead against my own his blue eyes boring into mine filled with the promise of our future together. Steve tipped my face up and his warm lips brushed against my own, his eyes never leaving mine. "I love you, Evelyn."

"I love you," I spoke my voice soft.

James's arm tightened around my waist, and I felt him growl into my neck goosebumps spread all down my body, "I love you too Evie."

"And I love you too James." I was trying so hard to keep my composure, but this felt too much like a goodbye. My chin wobbled with emotion that I was trying so hard to keep under control.

Steve's lips pressed against mine so softly, his warmth pressing into me, warming me deep into my bones. It was perfection to be held between both of the men I loved so dearly. I could have never asked for anything more. Steve angled my face into his, pulling both James and I closer as he deepened our kiss his tongue sweeping over mine. I felt James push all of my hair over my shoulder, then his lips pressed against the soft flesh of my neck, whispering into my hair between kisses.

"I love you," he kept repeating, "You've saved me." He'd say, "You are perfect," He'd praise.

My heart squeezed in my chest, I moaned into Steve's mouth at his words. If this was only a taste of what could be in our future, I would fight tooth and nail for it. I let my hands roam up Steve's back to thread my fingers though his hair.

James's hands did some roaming of their own. They moved up my body between Steve and I and he palmed my breasts. I arched into his touch at the action. They moved farther down over my belt and down to the heat of my core where he stroked me through the material. I moaned again angling my hips into his touch. Steve too moaned now, my movements against James urging him on. Steve's hands cupped my cheeks kissing me so thoroughly that my toes curled in my boots, I kissed him back with equal fervor. Steve's hands moved from my face and down to the collar of my jacket and over my gun harness. His fingers deftly unclasping the fasteners, while James worked easily at my belt. James let it fall to the ground and moved to the buttons of my pants and not even bothering to remove them he slid his hand inside. His hot fingers brushing my core. I heard him groan when he felt the wetness pooling there. Wetness for him, wetness for them. So eager to feel them, both of them just like this.

Steve still worked at my mouth, even as he pushed my jacket down my shoulders. James moved enough so that he could pull it between us dropping it to the ground near my belt. My nipples tightened, with want and need. Steve pulled away from my mouth then his eyes hungrily taking me in. My mouth parted panting at James's touch, my breasts heaving with wild desire and anticipation, a flush painting my entire body. His expression on his face was nothing short of starved, "Your fucking perfect," he said as he reached up to my sports bra and pulled it up over my sensitive breasts baring them.

James slid one finger over my clit just as the cold air hit my naked breasts and I cried out. Faster than I could think he wrapped his metal hand over my mouth, "You are going to need to be quiet Sweetheart," his voice like silk in my ear. "Can you do that for us?"

I nodded, and as I did so he slid a finger into me, and I had to bite the side of my cheek not to cry out. The sensation was bliss. Even more so when Steve leaned forward and captured a nipple in his mouth kissing sucking and nipping at the flesh there. I could feel the ever-rising heat bloom rapidly within me.

"She is so fucking wet Steve," I felt the bulge of James's cock press against me grinding it into my ass, "She's dripping."

Steve moaned against my breast. The sensation buzzed against my flesh like electricity. "Oh god," I mumbled into James hand, my eyes rolling back as James inserted another finger and began to pump his fingers torturously slow in and out of me. It paired like a fine wine with a meal to have Steve's mouth on my other breast, palming the one he had just been loving a moment before and James's fingers moving inside of me.

I feared the orgasm was going to come all too soon and I wanted this to last as long as possible. I clenched around James's finger, and I cried out when his thumb moved in torturous circles over my clit. My hips bucked and I clenched even tighter around him.

"Not yet baby," Steve moved his face close to mine again his eyes exploring my face, "Don't come just yet," his fingers caressed my nipples softly as he watched me. His eyes flashed behind my shoulder to James, "What do you think Buck?" he asked his voice filled to the brim with sin, "Should we let our girl cum?"

All the blood in my body was swarming and had such a hard time not falling into all of the sensations these men were inflicting on my body. When James spoke, his voice was so close to my ear.

"Our girl..." I could feel his grin, "I like that."

Steve loosed a sexy devil may cry grin of his own, "Yeah, our girl." His eyes fell to mine again as he wet his lips, "Are you our girl Evelyn?"

Before I could speak James did, "Fucking hell," he groaned, "she likes that. So. Fucking. Tight."

Steve's eyes dropped to where James's fingers disappeared into my pants. Reaching forward he pushed them down to my knees his eyes intent on where James's fingers slid in and out of me. The slick sounds no longer muffled by the thick fabric.

Pupils blown wide Steve could not look away, "She is so... fucking wet."

My breathing was so fast, and I tried so hard not to moan, but I could not help the writhing of my hips against James's hand. Steve moved closer to my core, "Let me feel her Buck," he said his tone reverent.

James slid his fingers from me and up my body my own wetness leaving a trail. His hand moving to cup my breast and play with my nipple before he moved his hands to his mouth tasting me. He hummed deeply. It reverberated through my entire body. He let his hand fall back to my breast palming it.

I gasped into James metal hand when Steve's fingers moved over my pussy. He caressed the skin moving the slick of my arousal all over my skin then spread me open with two fingers gently circling my clit before he pushed two fingers inside of me to replace the ones James had just removed.

It was his turn to moan, "You're right ugh," he closed his eyes as he moaned his fingers sliding ever so slowly in and out of me, "So wet, and so tight." Opening his eyes, he moved closer to me his mouth captured the breast that James didn't caress. His fingers still inside of me.

"Be a good girl for me," James said into my ear, "I'm gonna move my hand from your mouth and you're not gonna make a sound ok," I nodded and bit my bottom lip, Steve groaned when he saw this his hand reached up to pull my lip from between my teeth.

Distracted by this I didn't notice James spread my thighs wider, his metal hand moving between my legs to my pussy until I felt the metal of his prosthetic caress me. "you want me here too Sweetheart?"

I nodded, yes oh god yes, I did, I needed them, both of them.

"Fuck," Steve hissed.

For a moment I couldn't move.

Steve and James both had one finger inside of me and slowly they stretched me open, soon another two fingers filled me. Stretching me. Pleasuring me. A sinful part of me could help but think about how it would feel to have both of their cocks in me at the same time. The thought only made me wetter. The pain and pleasure of it all at once made me feel like I was going to burst. So slowly I felt them stretch me wider. James hand moved from my breast to land on my waist to steady me. Steve mouth moved from my tits to watch me stretch around them. I felt like I was going to burst at any second.

"James, Steve." I moaned before I could stop myself.

"That's it," Steve praised me, "You can take it."

"You're doing so good sweetheart," James's voice was ragged.

"I-I think I'm gonna cum," my voice came out like a whine.

"Yeah, you are," Steve agreed and with a look they both began to move their fingers faster in and out of me and I shattered. Steve's hand moved to cover my mouth as I cried out in pleasure.

"That's it baby," he crooned, "Look how good you were, such a good girl."

I panted falling back against James. He slowly slid his fingers from me holding me to him while Steve still slowly pumped in and out of me guiding me out of the best orgasm I'd ever had in my life.

I could not stop the rise of emotion from within me because these men had quickly become my entire purpose in the world. I was here to ensure that whatever was waiting for us in the future we would all be together. We wouldn't have to look around every corner, we wouldn't have to look in every nook and cranny. We could live finally at peace.

If we made it that is.

I let my arms fall around Steve's waist and I leaned into him while I felt James's arms tighten around me holding us all together and for that moment, I allowed myself to take a deep breath. Little did I know it would be my last for a while.

Toni

The fleet returned after we pulled the materials I needed from the remnants of the few remaining structures I knew would possibly have the components to build what I hoped would be a portal to this other world.  I could feel the swell of rage within me build because this is not what I signed up for. I had joined the ranks of the Titan in order to ensure that I survived. That my daughter survived. Yet right now this was exactly the opposite of that because once again I was being pulled into the thick of it all. The deep firery rage within me to end this once and for all was incumbent. I didn't like the thought that Thaw was once again going to be brought into my life. I had thought that I was finally done with that bitch once and for all. I had everything I wanted, and I felt like this was just another damned opportunity for her to win.

Again.

I tossed my tool set on the desk a growl of rage pulling from my lips.

I would end this no matter what it took. I would stand over her corpse once and for all in victory in order to get the life I was owed.

Arms slid around my middle, and a huff of warm breath tickled against the flesh there. A smile ironed out against my features, and I let my hands fall over the much bigger ones.

"You won't tell me what you're working on?" his voice dragged up and down my entire body and I turned in his arms letting my fingers drag up to his soft hair, letting my fingers caress along the beard upon his face.

"No baby," I gave him a feline smile, "You are my inspiration, you will see when the time is right and until then just keep me company."

Steve Rogers kissed me gently on the mouth, "Anything for you Toni."

Evelyn

It was easier than I thought to approach Thanos's forces, as we followed James's lead. He was like a ghost in the shadows, he was the creature I remembered from all of those years ago. The Winter Soldier, the man who got in and out without any clue he had been there in the first place other than the bodies that he left in his wake. Once we had breached the camp and we found ourselves in a broken-down office building. One that was thankfully empty. We set up a space to observe and learn the movements of the troupes below. Thanos, to his credit was not one to usually leave himself so open to this sort of observation but he had become complacent with his placement in this world. There was no one left to oppose him.

Just us.

My toes curled in my boots as I thought about what had happened earlier in the night. A taste of our future. But I couldn't allow those thoughts to distract me now, there was still so much to do.

James had positioned himself at the large window of the building. The glass was broken, and the wind whipped around the room. It was littered with broken furniture. The glass from the window littered the slate grey carpet where they had shattered upon it. His eyes scanned the area below and I could see just by the expression on his face that he saw far more than Steve, or I did.

"They are preparing themselves for war," he said his silken voice breaking through the wind whipped silence.

Steve moved closer and he looked over James's shoulder, "You're right," he turned back to look at me the skin of his face no longer as smooth as it had been the day before. The whiskers on his face longer now and I could not help but think he resembled more the man that I had left from this world. The one who had been left to his own demise at Thanos's hand. "By the looks of their movements, they are gearing up for something big."

I folded my arms not approaching the window but taking their word, "So what is the plan?" I asked itching to do something.

"There is no way that we can defeat him if he has the stones." James looked to Steve, "We did this before, and it took each and every one of our allies to rid him of the gauntlet."

"We also had Tony," they shared a meaningful look.

"What aren't you saying," I interrupted them, my stomach felt like it was on fire at the unspoken words.

James sighed his eyes flicking from Steve then to me and then finally moving back out of the window before he spoke. "I want to do some recon." He ignored my question.

"No." Steve's brows came together, "We don't separate, it's too dangerous."

James shook his head and he turned to Steve his expression solemn, "I can get in and out before they even realize that I'm there. I can't do that if I'm worrying about either of you."

I remained silent.

Steve grit his teeth and there was not much else to be said, we all knew that James was right, there was no one else with the experience to do it. Yes, I had been his partner for so many years, but I understood that this was a one-man mission. At least until we knew exactly what we were heading into.

"Go." I said my voice carried more strength than I hoped.

He moved from the window and towards me. His lips fell against mine briefly before he strode back to the stairwell leaving me and Steve to wait for his return.

I don't know what I would do if he didn't.

James

The night air here was different than back on our world, it was thinner, sour and filled with the stench of death. I was far from unfamiliar with those things but the weight of them, the weight of this mission was something else entirely. This mission was not like the thousand other mindless missions that I had gone on before. This mission was detrimental not just for me, but for Evie and for Steve. The life that we hoped to build together was on the line and I hoped that everything I had to endure in my life was enough to make sure that we could find our goal.

Thanos' forces stayed close to the building they had made their base. It was not lost on me that it was the remnants of Stark tower. I scoffed silently, I wondered if Steve and Evelyn had realized the same thing. Perhaps Steve would have been better suited for this mission because he had spent more time here than I ever had. I pushed those thoughts from my mind.

I watched the sentries carefully from the shadows memorizing their movements, and before long I was slipping through those shadows and sneaking into the building like a wraith. The inside of the building was much better off than the building that I had left Evie and Steve in. It had been rebuilt to look as it did before Thanos had decimated this Earth. The technology however, seemed to be a mixture of alien and Stark technology. I grit my teeth when I realized that each and every point of entry deeper into the Tower had some sort of coded entry.

Pressing myself further into the shadows I watched as a Chuthuri sentry pushed his long taloned hand against a scanner. The smooth glass panel granted him entrance to the rooms beyond. I took a deep breath and looked up. I had approximately three minutes before the next watch would be through. Moving to a stack of metallic crates I hoisted myself up and pushed myself through the ceiling tiles and into void of the drop ceiling.

This was what I had been trained to do.

An assassin in the dark of night.

Right on time the next sentry passed below me.  I dropped silently to the ground behind him slipping a bit of razor wire around his thick scaled neck. He fell before he even realized what was happening, I lifted the hefty weight of his body to keep the noise of his demise silent. Hoisting myself back up into the ceiling the limp sentry with me. I pulled off its helmet and was met with the ugly lizard like face. Before I could give it a moment to regain consciousness, I slipped the bowie knife from my boot and pushed it easily through the Chitahuri's closed eyelid and into its brain silently and swiftly ending its life.

I went to work sawing the creatures taloned hand from its corpse using scraps of its armour to keep the blood from pooling on the tiles.

I waited.

The next two sentries passed through the door, and then returned a few moments later meeting the next sentry that was supposed to pass. Their bodies tense as they spoke hushed in an alien language, I knew the missing sentry was noted.  There energy weapons blazed to life as they stepped out into the open night air, searching for their missing soldier and the foe that felled them. Silently I slipped down to the ground using the soldiers hand to open the barred door.

Once again slipping through the shadows and into the stairwell I moved up to where I hoped, with all hope, I wouldn't find what Steve and I both suspected to be true.

Steve

I couldn't help the tension that coiled within me, I was rung tight afraid for Bucky and afraid that I wouldn't be able to get Evelyn home safe. I knew she would be furious that I would be willing to do anything to make sure she got out safe, I could hear her voice in my head.

"I don't need you to save me... I need you to save our world..."

She wouldn't be wrong either, Thanos was a greater threat to everyone in this universe and our own. It was far more important than a potential happy ending for the three of us, no matter how much we longed for it. More than anything I hated that Bucky was in there all by himself and I was left out here waiting for him to return.

It wasn't lost on me that the building that he had entered was Stark tower. We both had our suspicions about what was going on here and I hoped for all of our sakes I was wrong. Especially for Evelyn.

I looked away from the auspicious building and over to where Evelyn waged her own internal war. She was leaning against a support pillar in the center of the office space, her face set in an expression that I couldn't decipher. I had watched this place harden her so swiftly that I almost couldn't recognize the woman who stood before me. I knew she was trying so desperately not to let her emotions bleed though but even in the short time that I knew her that it was a difficult task.

"I'm ok Rogers." She said with a raised brow, startling me from my observation of her, "I'm not gonna break, and as unbelievable as it sounds, I have been through far worse."

I rubbed my hand down my face, momentarily taken aback at the beard that had formed on my face.

Her features softened as she watched me for a moment, "You look so much like him."

She didn't need to say who he was, we both knew who she was referring to.

"I'll shave as soon as we get home." I didn't want to look like him, even if I knew it was stupid to say so because I was him.

She folded her arms over her chest and looked at me, really looked at me, "I want you to know that even though you look so much like him, you will never be like him," she looked down and I could tell she was warring with her own emotions, "I loved him for a long time but now that I have this with you and James..." she took a deep breath and moved closer to me her smaller hand reaching out to mine, "This is real," she pressed my hand over her heart, "He never once made me feel loved like I do with you and James."

Anger bit at my insides. How dare her husband not love her like she deserved?

"How is that?" I asked morbid curiosity taking over, needing to know how I could be better for her, to not become this man I had clearly became in this world as I stood in now.

"He had so much guilt," she sighed, "just like we spoke about before. Sometimes I think he thought he needed to be with me because of what happened here at the end of the war. That he crashed that zeppelin into the city choosing me instead of the country he swore to protect," her expression turned inward, "I think he thought it would have all been pointless otherwise."

"You loved each other though," my brows pulled together wondering for the first time the intricacies of their relationship.

"It started that way," she sighed, "But I think at the end it was just necessity."

I started to understand, "I think I get what your saying."

She pulled her hand from mine, "He knew I loved James and I think sometimes he was afraid that I loved James more than him. God, it tore everything apart. But everything that happened with Hydra, how could I not be different than the woman he destroyed a city for. I had become the very thing he had fought against. I was not a hero. I was not who he had built me up to be and James was the only one who saw that." She bit her lip as she pondered what she was trying next to say, "Toni was pregnant when everything went to hell."

My stomach flopped.

She stepped towards the window her back to me like she couldn't look at me to say the rest, "I never knew who's baby it was."

"You think it was Steve's?" I asked.

"It could have been James's too." She admitted.

I blinked.

"You're kidding." I knew she wasn't kidding.

"I wish I was kidding, god after all that time we spent together running from Thanos I never had the courage to ask." I could hear the tremble in her voice, "I couldn't have kids, it was a sore spot for me, and I never asked him how he felt because I didn't think I could spare the emotions for it. But a part of me always wondered if he knew whose baby it was."

"What's bringing this all up now?" I asked.

"I dunno," she said wrapping her arms around herself. "When I think about the future, I think about all the things that I can't have and now. I think about all of the things I can't give you, either of you."

I couldn't help the anger and guilt that rose up in me over the damage that this man had caused her. How could anyone who loved another soul let them hurt and anguish the way she did?

I took a step closer to her, but I didn't touch her, I knew she didn't want pity, "I want you. I know Bucky feels the same way. As long as it's you by our side that is all that matters.

She turned to me her eyes filled with a hope that made my heart clench in my chest. I made to reach out and take her in my arms, but the building began to shake violently. Then the world around us exploded into noise and chaos. Flames billowed in the darkened sky outside of the window the heat reaching us even here. The sounds of the building next to us crumbling in a fiery inferno to the ground around us filled my ears.

"James!" She shouted he voice barely audible over the noise of Stark Tower crashing down. The terror in her eyes was all encompassing.

I pulled her into my arms moments before the building we were sheltered in began to crumble because of the destructive explosion of the neighbouring structure. We were pitched to the side. Her wide frightened eyes met mine for only a second before we were thrown into agonizing pain. I reached out for her hand her fingers slipping through my own. Fear blossomed in my chest for an instant before we were taken into the darkness of a concrete grave.
