That Guy

Every school has That Guy.

You know the one. That guy who can turn any girl into a drooling, quivering mess just by aiming his eyes in her direction.

In our school, that guy was Finn McAllister.

It's embarrassing for me to admit this, but I happened to be one of those drooling girls. In my defense, Finn was pretty spectacular in every way. Jet black hair. Piercing blue eyes. A stellar athlete with the killer bod to match. He was gorgeous and fun and popular and did I mention he was gorgeous? Crushing on him was really pretty unavoidable when you think about it.

Kind of why it was sort of mind-blowing to currently see him wearing a mysterious smile on his face as he stared at me from across the hall.

I pretended not to notice as I opened my locker, but it was impossible not to notice the candy necklace waiting for me inside. I plucked it off the hook and turned to find Finn standing right next to me. He propped a shoulder against the wall, crossed his arms over his chest, and aimed a dazzling grin in my direction. That on its own was enough to turn me into a gelatinous puddle of goo, but then he went and added his honeyed voice to the equation. "You like it?"

My eyes went wide to ask, "You did this?"

"Yes," he chuckled. "It's a peace offering. You've been avoiding me. I figured I did something to piss you off."

He wasn't wrong. Last week, I overheard Kimmy Miller herself bragging to anyone within earshot about how Finn had asked her out, and I'd been steering clear of him ever since. I was still pretty shocked that he'd noticed, though.

I avoided eye contact under the guise of rooting through my locker, and said, "Thanks. But your girlfriend might get mad if she finds out about it."

"I don't have a girlfriend."

"I heard differently."

"Don't believe everything you hear."

I rolled my eyes. "Finn, please. Everyone knows about—"

"The real gossip is that I'm kinda crazy about you a little bit."

The revelation shook my world off its axis. My bottom lip tipped open as I gawked at his chiseled face in stunned silence, my heart beating a staccato rhythm inside my chest... because I realized he was telling me the truth.

As if he couldn't stop himself, he swiped a strand of hair behind my ear before trailing his fingertips along my jaw, and I had to mentally will my skin from liquefying at his touch. And his words. And his smirking lips. And oh my God this was really happening.

I made myself meet his eyes—despite the obvious peril—and saw that he was staring at my mouth. "Fact is, I've been trying really hard not to kiss you." His smiling eyes met mine as he added, "I just thought it was only fair to let you know I'm going to stop trying very soon."
