THIRTY
Yesterday, I was feeling immensely lonely. I hadn't talked to Kystan in ages. I couldn't even call him, because I knew he was busy. When he finally called me, my dad had to budge in. Today, I might go visit Jade.
I only get up to brush my teeth and bathe and then I go back to bed.
I hear a knock at the door. I grudgingly get out of bed. What does this person want this early in the morning? It's Sunday for crying out loud.
The first thing I see upon opening, is a huge pillow. Then a bag with treats a little lower.
"Surprise." He says. I launch myself on Kystan and hug him. I've missed him so much.
He wobbles but recovers soon enough to stop us from falling.
I usher him in and take the load from him. He is wearing pajama pants and a star wars t-shirt too. The light in his eyes as he grins, makes my heart tingle.
I wrap my arms around him again. "A week is so long." He says and sighs.
"Too long." I let go and start rummaging through the bag. I see a lot of chocolate, candy, chips, all the treats that can give you a sugar stroke, which I love. I am impressed by his thoughtfulness. He smiles at me, making my heart melt a little more.
He holds my arm and leads me to the sofa and lets me curl up on his lap as he scrolls through Netflix.
"How long do we have?" I ask, wishing he would say forever but he has to be ready tomorrow.
"All day." He says. That's good too. I burrow further into his chest, inhaling his scent. He wraps his arms around me. "What do you want us to do today?" He asks.
"Absolutely nothing." I am particularly lazy today and I want him to be lazy with me.
"Sounds good to me." He says and lifts his legs onto the coffee table getting as comfortable as he can.
After getting through a whole session of shouting at the characters in 47 Meters Down: Uncaged whenever they do something stupid, like get in the water in the first place, and eating two bags of chips, we go to my room.
"Let's take a test." I propose.
He looks confused, "A test?"
"Yeah, a spirit animal test." I say.
"What's a spirit animal? Is it like some dead animal or something?"
"Gosh, you're clueless." I say with awe. "A spirit animal is like an animal which shares some characteristics and behaviors as you." He still doesn't seem to get it. "Okay let's just do the test, you'll get it later."
I get my phone off the nightstand and look for a website to do the test from. I end up on brainfall.com. After setting everything up, I notice that he isn't getting his phone out too. "Where is your phone?"
"I left it at home." He says sheepishly. I love that he wanted to spend time with me without the distraction of a phone.
"We will use mine then." I say. "I'll start with you." I shift so that he can see the screen too, "First question, when someone is being overly dramatic about a situation, you; one, tend to stay out of it, two, get angry and annoyed, three, try to figure out the meaning behind it and four, give advice and hopefully lead them to a better path of understanding."
He ponders the question for a while, "I think I give advice."
"Okay, next question." When I see it, I am not sure even if I need to hear the answer to the question. I proceed with uncertainty, "The person you love reveals they have cheated on you. They apologize and promise not to do it again. You; one, take a break from the relationship to think. Two, follow your gut. Three, end the relationship or four, remain calm and work through it."
"I would remain calm and work through it." He answers without missing a beat. I am not planning to cheat, but knowing that he wouldn't go psycho on me if it ever happened is reassuring, almost.
We continue with the questions until the ninth one which is the last. "Ready for your results?" I ask him with excitement.
"Yup." He gets closer to see the answer more clearly. I burst into peals of laughter when I see the results. "A snake?" He says with disappointment.
"It is what it is." I nudge him on the shoulder.
"Find another website."
"No, no. Let's first see what I get."
I answer truthfully too as he looks on, I wait for my results with bated breath. When it comes it's a "Cat." I say happily.
"This is unfair." He crosses his arms and pouts his lips in protest.
He manages to escape from my hold and takes a pillow as he gets up. Before I know what is going on, a pillow hits me in the face.
He starts laughing until he keels over. I sit there fuming. Two can play this game. I grab a pillow from behind me and toss it at him as he is still laughing.
"Take that." I say happily. He straightens up immediately after it makes contact with his back. He gives me a hard stare. I grab the pillow that hit me the same moment he does the same.
We stare into each other's eyes, each of us willing the other to dare and throw it again.
I get distracted by my phone pinging, he gets the advantage. The moment I look back in his direction, I come face to face with a pillow flying towards me, I duck just in time. I also throw my own but he catches it easily. I get up from the bed for easier mobility.
And that's how the pillow fight starts. It goes on until we both fall on the bed tired but laughing at how childish this is.
Honestly, I shouldn't be this happy because it results in the destruction of both of our favorite pillows.
I look at Kystan who is beside me. Our eyes meet and we burst into laughter again.
Kystan gets up and grabs my phone, he seems to be looking through. A few moments later, Wow by Post Malone starts playing from my phone.
"Increase the volume." I tell him as I get in the mood for a little karaoke. He puts the phone down and sits while bobbing to the music.
I sing my heart out, I am not much of a singer, but who is judging? He joins me at some point.
The song soon ends and I choose by Alessia Cara goes in. It is a beautiful slow song that I can't help but dance to. I get up and walk to his side of the bed. His eyes follow me the whole way as I approach him. I hold out my hand inviting him to dance with me. He puts his much larger hand into mine and gets up.
I put my hands around his neck and he puts his on my waist. We start swaying to the song, I lay my head on his chest where I can hear the beating of his heart. He rests his chin on top of my head. I enjoy being close to him, feeling the beating of his heart listening to a song I love.
When the song ends, we don't part but rather keep rocking from side to side despite the upbeat rhythm of the song that follows. I remove my head from his chest and look up into his eyes. His gaze is soft as he looks at me. His eyes shift from mine and down to my lips and back again.
I stand on my tiptoes and wait for him to lean down. His lips find mine and the kiss starts slowly, tenderly. After time the kiss gets heated, but the space between us seems so big. He puts his hands under my hips and lifts me to straddle his waist. I wrap my legs around his waist all the while not breaking the kiss.
My stomach grumbles. I break the kiss immediately. I feel the blush rise to my cheeks, I can't believe my treacherous stomach would do that to me right when things were going so well.
Kystan chuckles. "Let's get you some food." He says.
I unwrap my legs from his waist and stand on my own. I avoid his eyes. He puts his arm on my shoulder and propels me to the kitchen.
He heads to the fridge and starts pulling random objects out. I look at the counter and see eggs, coffee, some lettuce and the Brighton cookies, clearly he doesn't know what he is doing.
"Sit down. We both know you can't cook." I pull him out of the kitchen.
"Fair enough." He pulls out a stool and sits on the other side of the counter in front of me. "I'll be lounging here as you work." He says tauntingly.
"Hmm, I don't think so." I look for something to give him, anything. I spot a block of cheese, "Here slice this up."
"Jeez." He cuts it up as I also make the easiest, but still tasty, burgers I can.
I don't know how an argument starts as we are eating. He is claiming that burgers are better than pizza. As if.
"No they are not." I protest.
"Yes they are." He challenges me. "What itsy bitsy advantage does pizza have over burgers? If it even exists."
"First of all, pizzas are easy to eat."
He scoffs, "Yeah and cloud bread is easy to eat too, but that doesn't mean I like it one bit."
"I hate it too. Still pizza has more flavors than burgers." I count on my fingers to make a point, "Pepperoni, cheese, margherita, Hawaiian, veggie, BBQ chicken, buffalo. And many more." I say and raise my hands to show how large it is.
"That's true, but burgers have more depth." I raise an eyebrow at the choice of words. He dips his burger in fry sauce, which I found stashed in my fridge, and holds it out to me. I take a bite and he takes it back and takes a bite too before resuming the argument. "As I was saying, burgers have meat, bread, veggies, cheese, and spices. It's healthier if you think about it." He claims.
"Hell no. Pizzas are healthier. And fyi, they also have bread, meat, cheese, veggies and all that."
None of us wins, we let the debate die out with the promise of sampling both out together before deciding on who wins. After eating, we wash the dishes and put them on a rack to dry. We head to the living room and rest for a while.
"Do you play video games?" Kystan asks me out of the blue.
"I wouldn't have a console otherwise." I motion to the console sitting on the TV stand.
"Great. Which console do you have?" He asks.
"PS2." I say with pride.
He looks surprised. "I didn't pin you for the gaming kind." He says.
"My dad had wanted a boy but he got me so he taught me all the things he would have taught a boy." I say and shrug.
"So you are good at this, right?" He asks just to make sure.
"Yeah." He hands me a controller and we sit down to play. Two hours of shouting, winning, losing and eating too many snacks later, I hear my phone start to ring.
I try to ignore it but then a recording comes on, "Important." It repeats that three times before we pause the game of GTA San Andreas we had been playing. I get up and go to check it out.
I pick up the phone and check what it's all about, "Oh shit." I say when I see the inscription on the alarm. I totally forgot about my appointment with Dr. Vicky today. It is only a few hours before I have to be there.
I ponder whether to cancel the appointment. I don't notice Kystan coming up to me, worry written all over his face. "Is something wrong?" He asks.
I look up at him, "I forgot I had an appointment with my psychologist." I say sheepishly. "I guess I'll have to reschedule." I say and start looking for Vicky's number.
Kystan's hand stops me, "No you should go." He says. "I'll come with you." He says seriously.
I am surprised at first before I consider it. But then I remember, "I don't want to make you relive the bad memories." I am pleading with him to not make it difficult for me.
"I'll be fine." He insists. When I see that he is not going to give in I concede.
"Okay. It's scheduled to 6 pm."
"Great, that gives me enough time to beat you at GTA." He retreats with excitement.
"You wish." I follow him back to the living room.
"Should I go back home to change?" He asks in the middle of a game.
"Not really." I answer without looking away from the screen because I am about to be beaten in this round. "You look hot in that too." I mumble hoping that he doesn't hear it but the snickers that follow prove me wrong.
We end up playing until 5:30. We shut down everything and stash the controllers away. Kystan follows me to my room and sits on the bed.
"I noticed that you are wearing a star wars t-shirt." I tease him.
"I am. I thought I'd find you in yours but I am not complaining either way." He says frankly.
I think about it for a moment, "I can make it happen." I say and proceed to look for it in my pajama drawer. I find it easily and lay it aside as I start to strip off my current t-shirt.
I chuck the t-shirt away but follow it with my eyes to see where it lands. My eyes land on Kystan.
I had forgotten he was here. I panic mentally, I am stuck between covering up and letting him see me dress, he is my boyfriend after all; one who hasn't seen me naked, but still my boyfriend.
I think Kystan notices my mental struggle because he walks towards me, keeping his gaze on mine and once he is close enough, he whispers in my ear, "You're beautiful, okay?" He kisses my shoulder and goes out of the room.
Kystan doesn't cease to surprise me, because of how considerate and caring he is, but also just those few words from him alleviate my self-consciousness. And he is highly spontaneous, which is cute.
I go back to putting on the t-shirt. As an afterthought, I grab a jacket because it will get colder as the night comes. Of course, I get the jacket from the A&F challenge.
I walk out to find Kystan sitting at the dining table wearing the same jacket as me. "Wow. We look so identical." I say with awe.
"Yup." He answers with a grin on his face. I think he likes it as much as I do.
I lock the door behind us and I manage to convince Kystan to hire a taxi on our way, not that it was hard though.
"Where are we going exactly?" He asks.
"The Wellington Hospital." I answer. Despite the difficult London traffic, we manage to flag down a taxi and we are on our way.
We make it to the hospital with only five minutes to spare. I rush to sign paperwork and get to the second floor. Kystan is with me all the way. I reach Dr. Vicky's door when I am huffing and puffing.
Kystan stops me before I open the door. He holds my hand. "I'll be right here." He points to a row of chairs visible from the waiting room.
I nod and take a deep breath. He opens the door for me and ushers me in.
I get confused when I see Dr. Vicky straining her neck to look behind me. "Is that the guy you told me about last time?" She asks with glee in her not-so-professional voice.
"Yeah?" I ask more of a question than an answer.
"So?" she asks with anticipations.
"So?" I don't know what she wants me to tell her.
"Are you together yet?" She asks.
It finally clicks. "Yup." I say and take a seat across from her.
"Good for you, girl." She says. She turns back to professional mode, diving into business. "So what has been going on in your life?" She says in her calm and professional tone.
The session takes approximately forty minutes. The advice she gave me was helpful and I want to try it out more.
"That's all, right?" She asks.
"Yeah." I answer.
Excitement comes back into her eyes. She is back to her normal state. "So tell me about him."
I put my elbows on the table to get closer as though we are spilling some hot tea. "Can you believe he surprised me with a full day together just being lazy?" I say with awe.
She looks pretty impressed, "My, my."
"Kystan is the most caring and fun guy I've ever dated." I admit more to myself than to her.
"Have you said the 'I love you's?" She asks, waiting to hear something close to a yes.
The question catches me off guard. "No." I answer. "We've been together for only a few months."
"Oh." She looks at me.
"Are we supposed to say it this soon?" I ask bewildered. "Sometimes I feel like I can say it, other times I am scared I'll be rushing again if I do."
"No, you don't have to do anything if you are not ready." She says.
"Is that your professional side talking or the friendly, twenty-something-year-old Vicky?"
She laughs, "I think it's both." She chuckles briefly, "They are both serious though." She adds. A digital clock on the table flashes a green light. "Oh, shoot. I only have 10 minutes before the next appointment and I want to go to the ladies'." She says and gets up. I also get up and follow her out the door.
"Where is Kystan?" She asks me as we head in the direction of the waiting room.
"In there." I point ahead of us.
"Since it's on my way, I want to meet him." She says with pleading eyes.
"Hmm. Let me check my agenda and see." I fake opening an invisible book to check. She just swats me on the shoulder laughing, "Sure." I finally say.
When Kystan sees us approaching, he gets up immediately. Judging from the matching outfits, everybody can tell we are here together. "Why didn't you tell me that he is that hot?" She says and pinches my arm playfully.
I rub the spot she just pinched and give her a glare.
Kystan meets us halfway across the room. "How was it?" He asks with an inkling of worry in his voice.
"Great." I answer. I step aside to introduce Vicky. " This is Vicky, I mean, Dr. Vicky." I correct myself fast enough.
"Just Vicky, unless we are doing business." She says while offering her hand to Kystan. They shake hands briefly. "Nice to put a face to the name Kystan." She says benevolently.
Kystan looks at me and I just shrug.
"Well, I have to go. Nice outfits by the way." She says. Before leaving though she whispers into my ear, "I approve of your taste." She says with awe then she is gone.
"You talked about me?" He asks wearily.
"Yeah. I kind of ranted to her about you." I joke but he seems to take it seriously. "I'm joking, she actually helped me realize I liked you." I admit frankly.
He relaxes, "So, what now?" He asks.
"I need a drink." I say.
"Okay. Is everything here done?"
"Yeah. We can leave." I say and loop my arm into his. I lead him to the elevator and we leave the hospital.
"Where are we going to get your drink?" He asks as we stand at the street with no obvious food place in sight.
"I know a place nearby." I say and take him to a BP station right next to the hospital where there is a Hurst's. "I won't go in. I don't like the smell of petrol that is there."
"Where are you gonna be?" He asks.
"Right here, leaning on the wall." I say it like it is the safest place imaginable.
He raises his eyebrow, "If you're sure." He let's it go. "What should I get you?"
"Any cold drink will do." I answer.
He walks in and leaves me there. I lean on the wall facing the direction we came from.
I don't see a hand snake over my mouth. Before I can even react, I am taken to an alley near the shop. I am unable to scream, nor thrash from his hold.
