Chapter 7- A Family's Hurt
"Charles! You should not have struck her!" Mary spoke with conviction.
"That girl needs to learn her place. She can not say such words and go unpunished!"
"That girl has lost her entire family."
"We have lost Catherine!" Mr. Smith said painfully.
Mrs. Smith bowed her head at the mention of her new born babe. Lost to hunger shortly after Elizabeth Johnston had grown ill. In a time where Emily noticed little to nothing that went on outside her own section.
A small voice chimed in, "Is Emily's mommy watching over baby Catherine like you are watching over Emily?"
Both parents stopped and looked at little Betty. Such words made their heart ache. Finally her mother spoke.
"Yes my sweet one. And we must be patient with Emily. She is very sad and it will take time for her heart to heal."
"Is her heart broken?" Asked Betty.
"It is. And we must do our best to help mend it."
Betty stood and crawled up in her mother's lap. Closing her eyes she said,
"Tomorrow I shall find a pretty flower for Emily. Then she will be happy again."
Mrs. Smith looked up at her husband. Knowing glances were exchanged along with a promise to do better. Both knew a flower would do little to mend such a broken girl.
A/N
Hello again! This part is more of a filler. I wanted to get The Smith's pov and it opens up a bit of their own sorrow during the journey. It was sad writing in Betty's lines.
