Chapter 14- Freedom

Emily Johnston felt as though she had stepped into another world as she walked softly through the thick forested area. The leaves were returning to their bright green color again after the horrible winter. The wind was gentle and for the first time in a very long time, Emily allowed a smile. A genuine smile. She felt safe and hidden away from the cruel world.

"I only wish I had left sooner." Emily said.

On she walked with no sense of direction or destination. Just further into the heart of the forest and further away from her past. A few times when her stomach growled its disapproval, she would pop a juicy berry in her mouth. An explosion of sweet juice erupted inside and it seemed to satisfy her hunger. The last time her fingers reached for a berry, they came up empty. Emily stopped and looked down to see her once full apron was now empty, except for dark stains where the berries had sat.

Emily would not let herself be concerned. "They were not ment to last forever."

So she kept walking. Once she thought she heard a sound behind her. That was when she remembered the indians. It occurred to her that she had no idea where they lived, she assumed Samoset and his people dwelt in the forest.

The sun was slowly sinking as the evening approached. Emily stopped and examined her current situation.

'It is getting dark, I need a place to sleep for the night.'

At the thought of sleep, her eyes suddenly grew heavy. Emiy began to pay better attention to her surroundings. The darker it became, the more twigs and dead branches she stepped on. The unexpected sounds made her alert but startled her at the same time.

Finally, just before it was almost too dark to keep going, she found the perfect spot. In a small clearing, stood a maple tree. Crickets chirped happily nearby and in the distance, an owl hooted. Emily again felt herself smiling,

"Yes, this is perfect."

Emily untied her apron and folded it as thickly as she could, in hopes of creating a substitute pillow. Although she may have been missing the comforts of a home, she did not miss the village one bit.

The night sky glittered with numerous stars. Emily had a perfect view as she laid down under the sheltering tree. The moon was full and suddenly it began to blur and only a hazy white object could she see.

A tear fell down her cheek and moistened her apron pillow. She was beginning to feel something she had not felt in such a long time. Happy, she was happy.

With this knowledge, the child slept beneath the open sky and did not stir.

Sorry if this was short and a little boring. But it will pick up.
