*Chapter 1
A/N- I'm back Bitches! As I sat watching The Hunger Games on Netflix, I have decided to actually work on editing this story. Sorry that it's taken me SO long, writers block is awful, but, what can you do? I know that I haven't worked on this or any story for a while, and I am sorry, to anyone waiting on my return, so if you've given up on me, I understand that too. However if you are reading this again after... way to long! I need to tell you that I have made a few changes. Thank you all for reading this!
Carter Everdeen had never been more excited than he was the day that he married the love of his life, Katherine Mikaelson at the age of twenty. The young couple had only been married for two years before learning that Katherine was pregnant, while it was true that most young couples living in The Seam of District 12 waited years before having children, the same couldn't be said about The Everdeen's, as they had waited a house full of children. Which seemed like an unrealistic dream due to the fact that life was hard, not to mention the fact that most likely one of their children would unfortunately be reaped into the Hunger Games which was a sad thought for any parent, however that did not change their minds. So when Katherine learned she was pregnant she couldn't wait to shout her good news from the rooftops. Nine months later Katherine gave birth to a beautiful baby girl that the couple named Katniss.
Time Jump-
Carter Everdeen started taking his daughter into the forest with him, the minute that she could walk, at first he taught her small things meant to save her life, like how to swim, and the difference between poisonous vs non poisonous plants, when she was three Carter began teaching his daughter how to shoot his bow. Katherine wasn't thrilled about this but she knew that Carter had been hoping that they had a son, not that he didn't love his daughter, he did. By the time Katniss was five she had shot and killed more animals than Gale, (their next door neighbor's son, who lose his father a few years back in a mine explosion. Since then Carter had been teaching the boy to hurt, he'd even made him his own bow for Christmas. Making Katniss jealous because she wanted her own bow as well, but her father explained that she had to wait until her fifth birthday, which is how Carter found himself craving another bow a few months later.
Even though it was the hottest May anyone in District 12 could remember having, Carter had promised that he would take his little girl out for her birthday, so he woke her up at dawn in order to try and beat the heat, after explaining to her that the deer would most likely not be out due to the heat, the two headed out to the forest. Now usually Carter would have taken Gale with them, but due to the fact that it was Katniss' birthday Carter decided to leave nine years old Gale at home for the day, father and daughter had been out for less than twenty minutes when Katniss shot the biggest deer that Carter had seen in a year, on a normal day Carter would have waited until the end of the day before heading back into town, but due to the extreme heat, he decided to call it a day, lifting the heavy deer on his shoulders, it was as Carter and Katniss were heading back towards town that Carter began to wish that he brought the young boy with them after all, since due to his daughters young age he was not comfortable taking his daughter into District 12's blackmarket, The Hob, and it was Gale who stayed outside with her. However without the boy he would be forced to bring her into the building with him, telling her that it was important that she not talk to anyone that she did not know and to not leave his side.
After about half an hour of walking around talking to a handful of people Carter noticed that his daughter was becoming board, so when they passed by the toy table, Carter stopped to talk with Jasmine, the local toy seller, telling her how it was Katniss' birthday offering her a section of the deer if she could keep an eye on Katniss until he was finished selling the meat, he also asked the woman to let his little girl pick out a new toy, after the toy was picked out. Jasmine decided to take Katniss over to the small candy store letting her choose a few sugary treats, as they were heading back across the room Jasmine had to run to the restroom, she looked around hoping to find Carter, unfortunately he was nowhere to be seen, so she had to leave young Katniss with the only person available at the time, which do happened to be the town's mentor Haymitch, who was as usual seated at the bar. "You want me to do what?" "Just watch Katniss for like fifteen minutes, while I use the bathroom!" "And what should I do?" "Nothing, I ordered her a brown sludge, and gave her a box of colored wax and some paper to draw on, all you need to do is sit with her."Jasmine tells her friend as she walked towards the woman's room. Haymitch had been sitting with the little girl for about two minutes before Carter made his way over to them, and asking "Where's Jasmine?" "She needed to use the restroom, so she left me with this little bundle of sunshine." Haymitch says with a smile on his face, as he placed a nearly dead yellow flower into her braid, and wished her a happy birthday as she walked away with her father.
That night before being tucked into her bed for the night, she placed the flower that she'd gotten earlier inside the small book of children's stories that she'd gotten from her Grandparents on her first birthday. After that day Carter began bringing Katniss into The Hob with him on days Gale wasn't with them, she would stay and listen to him make sells most of the time, it wasn't until he'd be nearly done for the day that she'd if she could have a few coins to go buy herself a drink, once she got them she'd make her way towards the small bar area and buy the popular sludge drink, before going to sit at the small table where Jasmine and Haymitch would be seated having lunch, and she'd sit talking to the two adults until Carter came to get her. Before The Everdeen's realized Katniss was twelve years old, and it was time for her name to be placed into the reaping bowl, luckily her name wasn't drawn, while Carter and Katherine were excited they'd get to keep their daughter for another year, it did not mean that they didn't feel awful for the two families who lost their children.
