Twenty: Lysander and the Kraken
The storm outside had greatly intensified. The rain could be heard pounding on the deck loudly as the Raymond crashed against the massive waves, riding across them precariously. Most of the crew was above deck, trying to keep the ship afloat. The passengers were below deck, riding out the storm.
The room they were in was lighted by two oil lanterns on either side, giving it a shady effect. The four of them sat in different places around the room. Kevin sat on the wooden couch with a bored expression on his face. Thalia laid on the floor with her legs propped up on the couch beside Kevin. Jack sat in the corner of the room looking absolutely petrified. Logan stood in the center of the room, repeatedly throwing his wooden shield against the wall and attempted to catch it again. He failed nearly every time.
Thalia groaned and sat up, pushing herself away from the couch. "I'm bored."
"Me too." Kevin agreed.
"I'm not." Logan replied with a huff between throws. "I like storms. My favorite weather."
"I h-hate them..." Jack muttered, his face even paler than usual.
Kevin laughed. "Oh come on, Ender-sissy, a little water never hurt anyone!"
Jack glared at him – and if looks could kill, Kevin would have been decapitated.
Thalia sighed and stood up, walking over to Logan. He glanced at her as she looked out the window as well and winced. "God, it's coming down hard..."
"It'll only go on for so long." Logan tried to catch the shield, fumbled, and dropped it. He sighed and headed over to her, leaving the shield on the floor. "These sorts of storms never last."
Thalia raised one eyebrow. "Look at you, ginger, all about your weather."
Logan smirked and stared out the window. "I just like watching rain. It's nice."
Behind the two. Kevin stood up and did some sort of no-handed cartwheel over the coffee table for no apparent reason.
"Yeah, I kinda like it too." Thalia agreed. "I was scared of thunder when I was little. All loud noises really."
Logan raised an eyebrow. "Really? Like what?"
Thalia laughed. "All sorts of stuff!" She replied. "Blenders, vacuums, lawn mowers, fireworks, thunder, you name it. If it was sudden and made a loud noise, I hated it."
Logan smirked. "So I guess you hated Amnesia then."
Jack looked up and stared at Kevin as he practiced his parkour out of boredom.
"No, actually, it was kinda fun for me." Thalia replied. "Although I woke Mom up in the middle of the night a few times because I was terrified."
Kevin's eyes narrowed and he ran forward; but he'd overestimated the size of the room. He managed to get in two flips before he slammed head on into the far wall, stumbled backwards, and landed on his backside in a daze. Jack just stared at him.
"Really?" An amused glint passed behind Logan's eyes. "I would've loved to see you play Amnesia. Must've been very entertaining to-"
"I MISS VENOM!"
Thalia and Logan both looked at Kevin in surprise as he shouted. "She would have laughed when I wiped out!"
Thalia smiled sympathetically. "Sorry, Kevin, we just weren't looking that time." She sighed and her smile faded. "We've just gotta come to grips with it. Venom's gone."
Kevin looked at her and his face fell.
Logan groaned. "Kevin, it'll be fine. We're-"
"Did you see that?" Kevin interrupted, his eyes wide.
Thalia's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "See what?" It was then that she realized he hadn't been looking at her. He had been looking past her. Kevin ran over to the window and looked out. His eyes widened. "Uh oh."
Logan and Thalia looked out as well and both gasped. There, in the water approaching the ship, was a massive squid, probably fifty feet tall. The Kraken. Lightning lashed across the sky above and the Kraken let out a loud roar, awakening cries of alarm from the crew overhead.
"ARM CANNONS! BATTLE STATIONS!" Thalia heard Ziska shout. That didn't make sense... Why would Ziska be giving orders? She was the first officer, not the captain.
Jack stood up. "What's wrong?" He asked fearfully. "What's going on?"
"It's the Kraken." Kevin replied. "Or a Kraken. Or a massive angry octopus. Always thought it was a fairytale, but I guess not." He flipped up to hood of his cloak and headed up the stairs to the deck. "C'mon, we gotta help!"
Thalia and Logan exchanged glances. Jack laughed nervously. "Yeah, I would, but y'know... rain..."
"It's fine. Just stay dry." Thalia replied. "Come on, Logan!" She ran up the stairs as well.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm comin'!" Logan replied. He grabbed his shield off the ground and pulled his now only sais out of its sheath before running after her.
The crew on the deck of the Raymond were psychotic. As the Kraken quickly approached, they all prepared. "FIRE!" A loud boom shook the air as a cannon shot out of the ship and hit the Kraken. It barely seemed to notice at all. "AGAIN!"
The Kraken roared as the second cannonball hit it, but it kept coming. Jack stood in the doorway leading down to the lower decks, hiding from the rain. "I would suggest you do something useful, but you won't listen!" He called.
"Shut up Jack, the grownups are working!" Kevin replied.
Jack muttered something under his breath, but made no other response.
Thalia quickly ran over to Ziska. "Zis, why don't you try something useful?"
"Don't you thing I'm trying?!" Ziska replied.
"Where's the Captain?" Thalia demanded. "He'd be able to get us out of this."
"He's dead, you twit!" Ziska snapped, turning on her angrily as lightning lashed across the sky. "Got himself killed in the pirate attack, didn't you hear? I'm in charge now."
"Oh great, now we're definitely screwed." Thalia said.
"Oi, I don't need your smart mouth-"
"Now is a very bad time to argue!"
"CAPTAIN, IT'S RIGHT ON US!" A crewmember shouted.
Thalia and Ziska looked up to see the Kraken looming over the Raymond. It raised its tentacles high and roared as it prepared to lunge, but then a massive boom shook the air, followed by another and another.
Thalia looked into the sky to see a massive airship hovering high above, shooting at the Kraken with just about all it had. Ziska smiled a little at the sight of the familiar craft and walked off. "Come on, then, fire!" She shouted. "May as well help!"
The Raymond as well fired off their cannons, until finally, the Kraken screeched and retreated into the ocean with a massive splash. Ziska let a low growl escape her throat and turned to one of the crewmembers. "Signal that ship to send her Captain down here."
"Aye sir."
The Captain came down by rope ladder quickly. Thalia, of course, didn't see him. The first chance she got, she walked over to Kevin. "It didn't know?" She asked in a hushed voice.
"It don't think it cares." Kevin replied. "I don't think the Kraken is part of the Squid Army. I think it was just terrorizing us
"Was terrorizing?"
"That's what I said."
"No, it's not was terrorizing, Kevin. It is terrorizing. We've made it mad." Thalia sighed and looked up. "I've researched Krakens. It'll be back. I'm certain of it."
Kevin winced. "Well, we'll just have to manage." He walked off towards Logan.
Thalia glanced up as the captain of the airship approached beside Ziska, talking about the former captain of the Raymond. But as they passed, the airship captain stopped and looked Thalia up and down, a confused expression on his face. "Who the hell are you?" He asked, his tone quick and English.
Thalia drew herself up to her full height a bit defensively. "Skylord Thalia Kal, who are you?" She asked.
"Skylord James Lysander." The captain replied.
Thalia froze and her eyes widened. Fantastic. Just what she needed to blow her cover. A real life Skylord who has no idea who she is. Eve looked between the two in confusion. "If I'm not mistaken... All Skylords are required to know each other. You can't be one..." She sneered and grabbed Thalia by her forearm. "Off the plank you go, impersonator."
"Hold on, hold on!" Lysander grabbed Thalia's arm back and shoved her behind him none too gently. "Let's not do anything rash! After all, we are in the middle of a storm." He pulled down on his blue Skylord's blazer as he resituated himself. "I merely didn't recognize Skylord Kal through all the rain."
Thalia blinked in surprise. Why was this guy defending her? For all he knew, she could just be some impersonator. She wasn't of any importance to him whatsoever.
Ziska crossed her arms, clearly not buying it. "Alright, then, let's put her to the test." She looked at Thalia. "If you're a Skylord, you're a captain. So captain us out of this mess." She glanced behind her nonshallantly as the Kraken resurfaced with a mighty roar. Lysander gulped. "Blimey..." He whispered, and Thalia went a bit pale. But before she could do anything, the Skylord stepped forward, wiping his look of worry away.
"Of course she can do it!" He nudged Thalia with his elbow. "Right?"
"R-Right..." Thalia shook her head vigorously and stood up straight. "Right!" She sent a glare in Ziska's direction, then strode off. Lysander smiled sheepishly and followed.
As soon as she was out of sight, Thalia hid behind the mast and ran her fingers through her hair. "What am I gonna do?! I'm not a captain! I-I can't do this! And these people are depending on me for their lives!" She looked up as Lysander joined her and grabbed him by his blazer collar. "What the hell am I gonna do?!"
"Well what you should not do is you should not panic." Lysander replied, pulling her hand away from his collar. "Secondly, act like you know what you're doing. It gives the crew confidence and sometimes yourself too. Confidence is key. And thirdly, be badass. Badassery helps them to not want to contradict you as much because they'll be afraid for their blimin' lives. Sheer badassery has saved my sorry hide on a number of strange and wonderful occasions." He smiled a bit as Thalia nodded and took a deep breath. "Now, I don't know where the hell you've been or how in Notch's great name you got yourself in this blimin' mess, but I do know this." He patted her shoulder. "You're a Kal. You've got leadership in your blood. If anybody on this ship can guide us out of this, it's you."
"But how?" Thalia asked. "I'm not my dad. I'm not a Skylord. I'm just a kid. I don't know what I'm doing!"
"Just stick to your gut." Lysander replied. "That's what your pop always says."
Thalia nodded, slowly at first, then faster. "Alright... Okay." She said. "Go with my gut?"
"And stun 'em all." Lysander said.
Thalia took a deep breath and the color returned to her face. She looked up at him a final time and smiled. "Wish me luck." Without waiting for a response, she swung around the side of the mast and strode out into the center of the deck. "Look alive, men, we've got a battle to win!"
Before any member of the crew could respond, a massive tentacle slammed down onto the deck and shook the whole ship. Thalia stumbled and nearly fell, but then righted herself and looked up to see the tentacle starting to reach out and pull on the highest mast. Too much more tension, and it would be snapped in two. Thalia's eyes narrowed and she looked at her friends standing nearby. "Kevin, get that tentacle off!"
"Aye, Captain!" Kevin saluted cheesily and ran over the tentacle. On his way there, he pulled out his dagger and slashed at the slimy thing, but it barely made a scratch and the Kraken didn't retaliate in any way whatsoever. Kevin quickly realized that wasn't going to work.
He looked around him for another alternative and quickly noticed a smaller mast adjacent the largest mast and smirked as he got an idea. He looked over to his Enderman friend leaning in the doorway worriedly. "Jack, take me up to the mast!"
Jack looked up, eyes narrowed. "What do I look like, an elevator?"
"Just do it!" Kevin replied as he ran up to him. Jack rolled his eye and grabbed Kevin's arm, teleporting the two of them up to the mast. Once the appeared, Kevin looked around, while Jack stayed sheltered from the rain beneath the sail.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"Looking for... Ah ha!" Kevin grabbed hold of a rope attached to the main sail and grinned. "I'm gonna get rid of that tentacle Tarzan-style." He took hold of the rope with two hands, crouched down, then hesitated with a thoughtful expression on his face. "I think I need a catchphrase."
Jack looked at him like he was insane. "...What?"
"You know, it's something a person says a lot. Like Geronimo or Allons-y. Or in Tarzan's case, just screaming."
Jack shook his head. "No, I know what you're talking about but... Why?"
Kevin shrugged. "Why not?" Then he beamed. "Ooh, I got a good one!" He tightened his grip on the rope and pushed off from the mast, swinging down towards the tentacle. "TALLY-HO!" He called loudly over the storm. Behind him, on the mast, Jack facepalmed and teleported back to the doorway.
As Kevin swung down laughing after his shout, he managed to kick the tentacle off the mast, although he fell off the rope and landed flat on his face on the deck in the process.
All the while, Thalia stared at the Kraken in the water, eyes narrowed in concentration as mayhem ensued behind her. As she did, she noticed a damaged spot in its lowered spot. She smirked. Finally. A weak spot. But cannons clearly didn't work. She quickly thought through her options and saw only one alternative.
"Ram him!"
"What?!" A nearby crewman confronted her. "Are you insane?! We'll be obliterated!"
"As acting Captain of the bloody seaship, I order you to do as I say! Now RAM HIM!"
"Aye, aye..." The helmsman half-heartedly muttered. He spun the wheel and set the Raymond in the direction of the Kraken. Thalia grabbed hold of the rail as they grew ever closer, approaching the beast fast and shouted a final warning to the primarily ready crew. "BRACE YOURSELVES!"
The whole ship shuddered massively as the front of the Raymond collided with the Kraken's wound. It let out a final, massive scream, then collapsed into the water with a huge splash. The ship righted itself in the waves and was left alone in the rain with minimal damage to the ship.
Lysander smiled at Thalia and helped her to her feet, who smiled back in response. The Skylord placed a hand on her shoulder proudly as Ziska approached the two. "So you see, Miss Sealord, our dear friend is indeed a Skylord."
Thalia walked quickly into the small room below deck and Lysander followed directly behind her, closing the door behind her. He pointed a finger at her accusingly. "What the hell are you doing here, Kal?!" He demanded. "And why on earth are you pretending to be a Skylord?!"
"I'm not pretending!" Thalia replied, pulling down on her false Skylord blazer defensively. "I'm undercover." Lysander crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. Thalia sighed and quickly explained her and her friend's mission.
Lysander blinked in surprise. "So the other passengers...?"
"Are with me." Thalia replied.
"Huh." Lysander huffed and placed his hands on his hips. "You're a Kal, alright. Smart and stubborn as hell." He looked her up and down. "And broad-shouldered too... Just like your mum."
Thalia rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to reply, but then there was a sound of fast-paced footsteps and the door swung open to reveal a rather excited looking ginger. "Skylord, you in here?" Logan asked.
Thalia and Lysander exchanged glances. "Which one?" Lysander asked with an amused smirk.
Logan smiled back. "Kal." He said.
Thalia crossed her arms. "What's the matter, Ginger?" She asked. "I do hope another problem hasn't arisen."
"Not at all." Logan grinned. "We're here."
