Eighteen: The Mourning Process
The sky was thick with clouds at dawn. It seemed like the sky was begging to rain but it was just barely holding back. The down was cold and gray. Thalia was glad she had her red Skylord's blazer to keep her warm as she walked out onto the deck. It was silent. The rest of the crew had gone and taken a well deserved rest. As soon as Venom had gone to the pirate's side, the ship turned and went off.
Thalia tried to get some sleep herself, but it just wasn't working. Considering what had happened the previous night, it was understandable. She had gone out onto the deck with the intention of being alone, but she quickly realized her intentions were in vain.
Sitting on the railing of the ship was the last person still around that Thalia could rely on. He appeared to be reading a rather thick book. She walked over to him and sat beside him. For a moment, she didn't speak. "It's funny..." She said sadly. "All our friends died just a few hours ago and you're reading a book as if it's nothing..."
Logan smiled grimly without looking book. "It's not a book... It's Shakespeare. I read it when my mom died when I was a baby and when I first was put in an orphanage." He looked up. "It helps me cope with change."
Thalia froze. "Oh..." She said. "So... Shakespeare was the playwright guy, right?"
Logan smirked and nodded.
"Which one are you reading?" Thalia asked.
"My favorite..." Logan replied. "Twelfth Night."
Thalia nodded, then sighed and looked away. "I can't believe he's gone..." She whispered.
Logan closed his book. "I know..." He said quietly. "We used to have five. One betrayed, one may or may not ever wake up, and one of us is dead... I knew Venom. She was the most loyal warrior I'd ever met. She loved Kevin like a brother... I don't know why she suddenly changed."
"It's just you and me now..." Thalia looked up. She stood up and started to walk back towards the stairs. Logan set his book down on the rail and stood up.
"Thalia, hold on." He said. "We shouldn't be alone right now. We're the only two left on this mission and-"
"Damn the mission!" Thalia snapped suddenly, turning on him angrily. He took a step back, taken aback by her sudden elevation of tone. "It's because of this god damned mission that all our friends are dead!" Thalia froze. Her face fell. "All our friends are dead..."
"Thalia..."
Thalia ran back and threw her arms around him, trying to ignore the fierce blush touching her cheeks and she buried her face in his shoulder. Logan's eyes widened, not sure how exactly to respond. "Er..." He slowly hugged her back, patting her shoulder awkwardly. "It's um... Gonna be okay..." He said uncertainly.
"Thanks Ginger, that's really reassuring." Thalia muttered.
Logan smirked. "Look, Skylord, at least I'm trying..." He replied.
"How sweet."
Logan's head snapped up. Thalia quickly let go of him and stepped away. Ziska just smirked at the two with her arms crossed. "You guys should really be a couple... I mean it's totally up to you and all, but you should be together."
If possible, Thalia's face reddened even more. "Go away, Sealord."
"Make me, Skylord." She smiled, calling her out on her lies when Thalia had done the same to her.
Logan glared at her. "Just go away." He said. "You're getting on my nerves."
"Alright... I was only going to help you geta weapon for your left hand..." Ziska said, turning away.
Thalia sighed. "Wait."
"Thalia no, it's not worth it." Logan warned. "I'm fine with just one sais."
"You trained with two and I'm not willing to lose another friend today." She hissed. She looked at Ziska as she turned back around with a smirk on her face.
"Wait?" She asked slyly.
"What weapon?" Thalia asked.
"Well, it's not a weapon per say..." Ziska gestured towards the stairs leading below deck. "Shall we take a look, then?"
Thalia and Logan exchanged glances.
"This is the storage vault." Ziska said as she walked into a room filled with boxes and crates and random items. "There's plenty of stray weapons you could use." She said.
Logan looked around at all the weapons in the vault. There were swords, knives, daggers, bows, quivers of arrows, even ninja throwing stars. But no sais. Then his eyes locked on a round wooden object. "What about this?" He asked as he walked over to it.
"That?" Ziska asked, raising an eyebrow as Logan picked it up, testing its weight and balance. "That's just an old shield. Nothing special."
Logan grinned. "Thalia, throw something at me."
Thalia raised one eyebrow incredulously. "What?"
"Throw something! Anything!" Logan replied.
"Yeah, sure... Uh..." Thalia looked around until her eyes locked on a dagger. She held it back behind her head as Logan looked down at the inside of the shield curiously. She threw it hard. Logan yelped and raised he shield just in time to catch the dagger. The blade stuck in the wood firmly. Logan peered over the edge of the shield, then grinned and pulled it out. "Thalia, I think I'm in love."
Thalia smirked and crossed her arms. "So are you gonna learn to throw that thing?" She asked.
"Huh?"
"Like Captain America." Thalia said. "You gonna learn to throw it?"
Logan grinned. "Oh hell yes!"
Suddenly, the medic from last night ran down the stairs. "The Enderman is waking up!" She said. Thalia and Logan exchanged glances. Thalia immediately ran up the stairs, the medic following after her. Logan struggled to latch the shield onto his back before following a few seconds behind them.
Eve watched them go with a smirk. "You're welcome." She said to herself.
Thalia and Logan arrived in Sick Bay just as Jack came to.
He sat bolt upright, gasping and looking terrified. He cried out and scrambled off the side of the bed, landing hard on his head, his legs propped up on the bed. He groaned and rubbed his head painfully. "Oh god... What the hell happened...?" He asked. He squinted upside down at Thalia and Logan. Suddenly he remembered. "Oh no..." He closed his eyes and rested his head on the floor. "Did I hurt anyone?"
"Well..." Logan rubbed the back of his head awkwardly. "You attacked Kevin, and-"
"Kevin, oh my god!" Jack's eyes shot open. He scrambled off the bad and to his feet. He started to stumble around Sick Bay like he'd been drugged, unable to see straight. As he spoke, he voice quaked immensely like he was cold. "Where'd he go? Did I kill him? Please tell me I didn't kill him!"
Jack let out a cry as his legs gave out from under him. He grabbed the edge of the bed to avoid hitting the ground. "Okay... No..." Logan walked over to him and helped him not fall on his face. "Jack, just relax. You didn't kill Kevin."
Jack sighed in relief and looked away. "Oh thank god..."
"Venom did." Thalia said bitterly.
Jack froze. "What...?" He whispered.
Thalia stared at the floor. "She betrayed us. Kevin is dead."
Jack stared at her wide-eyed. He took another shaky step forward and with a strained sigh fell again. Logan and Thalia helped him stand up straight again. "Jack, you need to rest!" Thalia said.
"No, I can't!" Jack replied. "I'm never sleeping again because every god damn time I do shit goes down and my friends all die!"
Logan sighed. "Jack, you're acting like a child!"
"NO, I'M NOT!" Suddenly, Jack pulled away from the two and disappeared in a flash of purple before they could react.
Thalia sighed and lowered her hands to her side. "Well... I guess that's the last we've seen of him..." She lowered her head sadly and headed out of the Sick Bay. "Come on, the funeral's starting..." She muttered. Logan nodded grimly and followed after her up to topside.
As soon as they were out of sight, Jack reappeared on the opposite side of the room. He froze as he realized where he was. Lying on the bed next to him was none other than the body of Kevin Murphey.
Jack looked away quickly, but then back again. "Look... Um..." He knelt down on the bedside nervously. "I never got the chance to apologize for almost killing you before you died... And... I just want to tell you I'm sorry..." He stared at Kevin for a moment, half hoping he would hop up laughing and just say it was some sort of April Fools, but he did no such thing.
"Damn..." Jack looked away quickly, a tear burning his cheek painfully. He scrubbed it off quickly and smiled bitterly. "Just goes to show... I'm better off on my own... I'm only a danger to everybody... And now you're gone just like them." He let his head fall down on the table painfully. "I'm sorry..." He muttered.
He stayed there for a moment, neither want to or needing to move. In the time he'd known him, Jack had started to look to Kevin like his little brother. Although Kevin didn't hate Jack quite as much as his actual little brother did...
But now he was gone. And Jack was alone again...
"It's okay, bud..." Kevin smiled drowsily and patted his arm weakly. "I forgive ya..."
Jack's head shot up. His eyes widened. He stared at Kevin in shock. "Y-You're-"
Kevin grinned. "Alive and kicking!" He sat up and swung his legs off the side of the bed. He stood, grabbed his white cloak off the wall, and swung it onto his shoulders as he stumbled about a bit drunkenly. "C'mon, let's go reenact the walking dead!" He called as he ran up the stairs to the top deck. Jack just stared after him in shock for a moment, then he too ran up the stairs.
