Prologue
Loud noises. Bright lights. Screams, also.
That was all she could remember of that day. Maybe because she was still very young and didn't understand what was really going on; maybe because she didn't want to live it again and see, like it was right in front of her eyes, Jet Star's body falling on the engine bonnet. Lifeless, with dark blood pouring from the bullet wound on his chest. Every time she tried to think about it, the images were blurry and confused, like when you're on a carousel and you see the world turning around at an insane speed that makes your head spin. It gave her a terrible headache.
The only clear thing in her mind was the moment when she discovered her brothers were dead. She didn't believe it when her mother, in tears, told her. They had left for a mission with their friends and they had promised they'd return. Neither of them ever did.
You have to imagine that eight year old girl, who just came back from rescuing another killjoy, entering her house and finding her whole family in the living room with sadness and hoplessness written all over their faces. What would have been your reaction? What would you have thought?
Gerard always kept his promises and for the little red haired girl that was unaccetable. She even refused to go to his and Mikey's funeral, in the middle of the desert, and didn't bring up the topic for a long time. Her brothers were her heroes, the bravest people on the heart and who she always looked up to. The bond she had with Gerard in particular was incredible, they were always there for each other and did all they could to protect their family. He was her confident and knew what was the right thing to say in every situation. Gerard really loved his sister, and so did Mikey, her being their last thought before dying.
She felt angry and betrayed in the beginning, like every little sister would feel. She cried at night because, subconsciously, she missed them so much and wasn't able to express it properly. Add to that years of being continuously bullied for her look and starting to question everything about herself, from the sexuality to the reason she was even alive, and you get the perfect potrait of Andy Way.
It must be said that her parents, after Gerard and Mikey's death, changed completely. They were not the same anymore, and sometimes seemed to forget they had another child who needed them. It looked like they had no reason to live anymore, and ended up shutting Andy out. When she came out as genderfluid and bisexual the only thing she got, was a slap in the face and an awful amount of insults.
- You're not my daughter! I didn't raise such an horrible thing. You're not my Andy, my Andy would never do this to her parents. - said her mother, looking at her hand. It was still red because of the slap and by the look on her face it was like she had just touched someone really dirty.
- I'm disgusted and I-I think your b-brothers would be too. Go away, we don't want to see you anymore. Don't ever come back! - said her father, before kicking her out of her own home.
She was left alone at the age of sixteen years, with nothing left, just a bag of clothes and some food, which wasn't going to last. The first thing Andy had to find was another place to stay, but the possibilities weren't many: she had no relatives left from her mother's part and her father's lived far away from California, so it was impossible to reach them.
It was just by accident that she collapsed on a stranger's porch, no energies left and sleep-deprived, who ended up taking care of her. His name was Brian and thanks to that tall, thin, gray-haired man she decided to become a proper killjoy.
Brian had lost a son too, Frank. Andy didn't know it was one of his brothers' best friends, she discovered it much later, when the other son of the man came back home from the training school.
They were both eighteen at the time and Michael Iero was the only one who succeded into making her spill her whole story and growing very fond of the small, turbolent, red-haired teen.
They had, apparently, a brother-sister relationship. Basically, Michael filled the empty spot two premature deaths had created, and that was the best thing Andy could ask for. She needed not only a friend, but also a brother.
Their personalities also complemented each other, Andy being more reserved and shy, Michael having is body overflown with power and beaming happiness under all circumstances. He was the sun, her the moon, so different but also so similar.
And who would have thought they were going to be part of the most badass group of killjoys 2019 California had ever seen?
