7 - I have to play?!
As the days go by, usually either I or my friend have to wait for the other one because they are in testing. My friend has to wait more, since apparently I've been having more testing that is longer than my friend has.
"Test subject 9536 please report to testing. Test subject 9536 please report to testing," I hear.
I get up from the chair I am sitting on and I go to testing.
Once I get into testing, the scientist seems to want to do things quickly.
I quickly follow her to the testing room I will be in today. I quickly take the purple drink from her hand. I quickly drink it. I quickly lay down.
"Get up," says the scientist.
I get up.
"Hello," says the scientist.
"Hello," I reply.
"How are you doing?"
"Good. How about you?"
"Good."
"How are you feeling?" she asks.
"Good. How about you?"
"Good. What do you like to do?"
"I don't know. What about you?"
"Swim."
"What is your favorite food?"
"I don't have a favorite food. What is your favorite food?"
"I don't know."
"Do you want to go swimming?"
"Yes."
"Let's go."
"To the swimming pool to swim?"
"Yes."
The both of us walk to the swimming pool and get changed in the locker room. After we have our suits on, we both get in the pool.
In the pool, we both freely swim around.
"I would like you to swim back and forth," says the scientist after we have awhile.
I start to swim back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth.
"Let's go back now," says the scientist.
"Understood."
We both get out and change into our regular clothes in the changing room. After that, we walk back.
"Here, drink this," she says once we get back.
I take it and drink the purple drink. I then lay down.
"Our testing has gotten pretty far, hasn't it?" I hear someone say.
"Yes, it has. We are still a long way from completion," says the female scientist.
Completion? What does she mean?
"Don't you have to see Paul again?" he asks.
"Yeah, soon."
I hear the sound of footsteps walking away.
"We are done with testing for now," says the scientist.
I open my eyes and slowly get up.
"What was that you were talking about?" I ask.
"Oh. Whatever you heard, it just had to do with your testing."
"I see."
"I will bring you to a transporter. You have time in the lounge."
I follow her to the nearest transporter and I get on.
Once I reach the lounge, I notice my friend right away.
"Hi!" I say, walking over to her.
"Hi! Let's play a game!" she replies.
"Sure."
"We... have to play the game where we try to get rid of all our cards!"
"The game where we try to collect the most the first round and get rid of all of them first the second round?"
"No."
"Then what game?"
"The game where we just have to get rid of all our cards first to win," she says mischievously.
"I think I remember that game..."
"Good."
"Alright."
We start to play the game. The first few rounds I win, but it after that I stop winning.
"Can we stop playing?" I ask.
"No!"
"So you're having that much fun?"
"No... We have 40 matches left!"
"What?"
"We have 40 matches left!"
"Since when?"
"We never finished..."
"Finished what?'
"Last time. We had 61 matches left, and now we have 40!"
"I think I remember that. Do we have to?"
"Yes..."
"Can't I give up? There's no way I'll win."
"Just try."
"No."
"Why not?"
"I know that I'll lose. I know that you have some sort of plan."
"Oh. You've figured that out."
"It's obvious that you would have a plan."
"There's the chance that I didn't have one."
"That's true, but you always come up with a plan when we play a game."
"I see you know me well."
"Of course I do! I'm your friend."
"That's true."
"So... what's your plan?"
"Why would I tell you it?"
"That's true... I'm giving up so... it doesn't matter now."
"No."
"What?"
"You can't give up."
"Why not?"
"We still have 40 matches left."
"Seriously?"
"Yes! Of course I am."
"Is having 40 more matches really necessary? Can't we just say that you win?"
"What... are you saying?"
"I'm saying that we will just say that you have won."
"Why... would you ever suggest that?"
"Umm... is it bad that I did?"
"Yes! It is!"
"I never knew that."
"Now you do!"
"I guess I do."
"Let's continue!"
"I still am against doing 40 more matches. Can't we take a break?"
"Fine. 5 minute break."
"No... I meant more like a week break."
"And why would I do that?"
"I don't know..."
"I would forget my plan!"
"I guess..."
"Well the break has started. Let's just talk or something like that."
"Sure."
"You've already had testing today, right?"
"Yeah, but who knows if I'll have it again or not."
"What do you mean?"
"We've both been having it for longer. Also, it's been getting more frequent. Haven't you noticed?" I ask.
"Not really..."
"I've noticed that it has been."
"I guess it has. I only noticed that we've been having it for longer, but not anything else."
"Oh."
"What else should we talk about?"
"I don't know."
"Let's talk about the 40 more rounds!"
"No."
"What? Why not?"
"I hope I don't have testing again today."
"Don't change the subject! We need to talk about the 40 rounds we have left!"
"Say what you want, but I'm not talking about that."
"Fine."
"I really hope I don't have testing again today."
"Why would you? You've already had it once."
"That's true."
"Then why would you be worried about having it again?"
"Because they've been longer and more frequent."
"I wouldn't think it would happen again today."
"It's happened before in the past."
"It has? I don't remember."
"I'm not sure if you were there."
"Maybe I wasn't."
"I don't remember if you were there or not."
"Let's get back to this match!"
"Has 5 minutes passed yet?"
"I don't know."
"I thought you were keeping track..."
"Well... about that."
"Let's just not play today. There's a chance I may have testing again."
"No! We are going to play! I know that you're not going to have it again."
"Test subject 9536 please report to testing. Test subject 9536 please report to testing," we hear.
"I have to go." I say.
"No!" she yells.
"Didn't you just hear?" I ask, walking away.
I get into the transporter before she can answer. I know that she might bug me more about it even though I have to report to testing.
When I reach testing, I tell the protector my number and after I follow the scientist into the testing room I will be in today. The scientist seems to be wanting to do things quickly again, so I quickly do things.
"Get up," says the scientist and I get up.
"Hello," she says.
"Hello," I reply.
"How are you?"
"Good. What about you?"
"Good. I would like you to follow me."
"Where are we going?"
"To Paul."
"Why are we going to see your boss?"
"It's for my job."
"Oh."
"Could you remind me when we are about to leave Paul's office to ask him what I need to work on?"
"Yes," I reply.
I follow her to Paul's office.
"Hello," says Paul.
"Hello," I reply.
"Hello," replies the scientist, standing at the door.
"How are you doing?" Paul asks me.
"I am doing fine. What about you?"
"I am doing fine."
"That's good."
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling great. What about you?"
"I am feeling great. What do you want to do?"
"I don't know. What do you want to do?"
"I want to talk."
"That's fine with me."
"What do you like to do?"
"I like to swim. What do you like to do?"
"I like to eat my favorite foods."
"Your favorite foods are broccoli and spinach?"
"Yes."
"Do you like your job?"
"Yes. What about you?"
"What is my job?"
"I guess you don't have a job."
"Could I get a job?"
"You're already useful."
"How can I be useful without a job?"
"You don't need a job to be useful."
"So what I'm doing is good enough?"
"Yes. What is your favorite food?"
"I don't know."-
"Oh. Who is your favorite person?"
"You and the scientist."
"I asked for one, but two is alright. It's actually good."
"Why?"
He hesitates before saying, "It makes you more useful."
"It does?"
"Yes."
"That's good. I want to be as useful as possible."
"You're already useful enough. It's alright if you don't become any more useful."
"What do you mean?"
"Your fine the way you are."
"Oh. I see."
"Why do you want to be useful?"
"I want to be useful because I can't get a job."
"I understand."
"You do?"
"Yes. Do you like to read?"
"How do you read?"
"It's like talking, but it's on paper. I'll teach you sometime."
"Can you teach me now?"
"Another time."
"I want to learn."
"I'll make sure to teach to another time. Would you like anything to eat or drink?"
"I would like some water."
"Anything else?"
"What else is there to have?"
"Broccoli and spinach."
"I'll try both of those."
He gets up and gets what he calls "broccoli" and what he calls "spinach."
"Here. This is broccoli," he says, handing me the broccoli.
I take a bite of it.
"It tastes alright."
"Here's the spinach."
I take a bite of the spinach.
"I don't like it at all."
"I see. Not many people like it. I have something else for you to try."
"You do?" I ask.
"Yes. Have you eaten recently?"
"No."
He gets up and gets something else.
"This is a meal for you."
"Alright."
"Please, eat all of it."
I start to eat the meal Paul got for me.
"How does it taste?" he asks.
"It is nice," I say as I am eating it.
"Please chew with your mouth closed. It's rude to chew with your mouth open."
"Sorry," I reply.
"It's alright, you didn't know."
I nod my head.
"Can I have some water?" I ask once I am finished.
"Of course!" he says getting up to get water.
He gives me a glass of water bigger than the glasses the scientist gives me. I drink the water slowly.
"How does it taste?" he asks me.
"Water doesn't have a taste."
"I guess not."
"Why don't you eat something?"
"I already ate."
"Oh. Why don't you at least drink some water?"
"I think I'll do that."
He gets up to get himself a glass of water.
"Could I have another glass?"
"Of course," he says, taking my glass to fill it back up.
We then both drink our water.
"You are very nice."
"I'm not that nice."
"Yes, you are nice."
"Oh. I see."
"It seems you're not nice to everyone."
"No, not everyone."
"Are you mean to everyone?"
"Yeah..."
"You're nice to me. Why?"
"You're special."
"Why?"
"You're... different."
"I don't want to be different."
"One day you will be normal."
"I don't understand."
"Never mind that. You've come a long way."
"Oh."
"It was nice talking with you. I wonder if I'll ever get to talk to you again."
"It was nice talking?"
"Let's go," says the scientist.
"Wait. You said to remind you that you wanted to ask Paul what you wanted to work on."
"Oh. Yes, that. You can go back to the testing room, I have to talk to Paul."
I walk back to the testing room by myself and I wait for the scientist.
"I'm back," she says after I have been waiting for what feels like forever.
"Here, drink this," she says getting out a purple drink.
I take the drink from her and I drink it.
"End program," she says.
"Get up," she says to me.
I get up.
"Hello. How are you doing?" I ask.
"Hello. I am doing fine." Says the scientist.
"That's good," I say.
"What would you like to do today?" she asks.
"I don't know."
"How about we try something new?" she suggests.
"Like what?" I ask.
"Running."
"Running?"
"Follow me."
I follow the scientist to where we will be running.
"You will be running around here. Just follow what I do. Running is pretty much walking really fast."
I do the same thing that the scientist does-I run.
"I'm tired out," I say eventually.
"Alright. Let's stop here then."
"Understood."
"Here is some water."
I take the water from her.
"How do I drink it?"
"Do what I do."
I copy the way she drinks the water.
"It makes sense now."
"Do you want to run some more?"
"Not really."
"Alright. Do you like running?"
"Not that much."
"I see. Let's go back to the testing room."
"Understood," I say, as the two of us go back.
"When will I get to talk to Paul again?" I ask.
"Sometime soon when we need to."
"When is that?"
"Once you have progressed more. Pretty much when you have become more useful."
"Paul told me I was useful enough already."
"You are, but we want to make more progress."
"Make more progress?"
"Yes."
"In what?"
"In creating you."
"Creating me?"
"Yes."
"Oh."
"Is there anything else you want to do?"
"No. I'm too tired."
"Alright," she says, smiling.
"What will we do next?"
"Let's just rest in the testing room."
"Understood."
When we reach it, we sit down on chairs in the room.
Soon, she gets up and gets out a purple drink.
"Here," she says.
I take it from her and I drink it. After I lay down on the bed.
"End program," she says.
AN: I'm writing an extra chapter for this story that has to do with the MC's friend but I don't know if I should add it right after this chapter or at the end. Readers, would you want it at the end or right after this chapter? (I plan writing other extra chapters besides the one I'm talking about).
Edit: I have decided to add the extra chapters at the end.
