5 - Testing Interrupted our Fun

4 days later, I have had testing 3 more times. The scientist tells me that I no longer have to use the machine to eat.

"You can eat normally now," she says.

"Alright," I reply.

I have gotten used to my new voice now. I have talked to my friend once and she didn't find it weird. I think that's part of the reason why I have gotten used to it. It isn't that bad of a voice in the first place.

"I will bring you to the nearest transporter. You have time in the lounge right now," she says.

I follow her to the nearest transporter and then I go to the lounge. When I reach it, I see my friend.

"Yay, you're here," I say running over to her.

"Yeah, I'm here," she says.

"I really wish my voice would be normal again. I am used to it by now, but it has no emotion."

"Maybe it will be back to normal after a while. Besides, it's not that bad."

I don't say anything.

"How about we play this game?" asks my friend picking up a game.

"Sure."

Looking at the game, it looks interesting.

ANYTHING PAST THIS LINE WAS WRITTEN DURING THE SEMPTEBER WRITING CHALLENGE

I read the directions. This game is a game where you have to get the most cards in a certain amount of time and then whoever gets rid of all of their cards first wins.

"Let's start!" says my friend once she has set up the game.

"Alright," I say.

The game doesn't start out really hard, but it doesn't start out really easy either. We are trying to get the most cards, but there are cards that make someone else put some of theirs back.

"No!" I say when my friend puts down a "Put 4 back."

I put 4 cards back.

My friend then picks up a card and it is my turn again.

I put down a "Put 2 back" card down and my friend puts two cards back.

I then pick up a card and it is my friends turn.

She puts down a "Put four back."

I put 4 cards back.

She then picks up a card.

In this game if you put down a put back card down, the other person has to put back that amount of cards. Then you take a card. Then the other person's turn starts.

I just pick up a card this time.

We continue to do this-I pick up a card and then my friend makes me put back 4.

"How long are you going to do this for?" she asks me.

"Aren't you running out of put back cards by now?" I ask.

"I guess.... Wait what? Was this your plan?"

"Let's just continue the game."

My friend is very competitive and is good at most of the games, but she isn't as good at the new games that come every once in a while since she hasn't played them most.

There isn't much time left.

I start putting down put back cards. I have a ton of those now.

"Ugh," she says once I assume she has run out of put back cards.

"Did you run out of put back cards?" I ask putting down a put back 4 cards down.

"Why should I tell you? This was your plan from the beginning, wasn't it?"

"So it seems you have."

"How do you know that?"

"I guess based on your actions."

"Whatever. Let's just continue. We are wasting time."

I continue to put down put back cards while she is mostly picking up cards. Every once in a while I pick up cards myself.

"2 minutes left. I don't think you can win the first round in that amount of time," I say.

I start to pick up cards instead of putting them back.

When the timer goes off that the first round is finished, I look at the amount of cards I have compared to her. I notice that have a lot more cards than her. Hopefully most of her cards aren't put back cards.

"I win the first round," I say.

Now we exchange put back cards.

"How does this work again?" I ask looking at the directions, "I see."

"Now we have to put away our put back cards and pick up the amount of cards it says to put back instead of putting back cards," I say.

"I get it."

"I do as well."

We pick up the cards as our put back cards say.

"This game is harder than I thought it would be."

"Yeah," I agree.

Once we have finished that, we start the next round.

Even though I start out with less cards than her, she seems to be winning right now. It looks like she has less cards than me.

"I win!" says my friend once she gets rid of all of her cards.

"Test Subject 9536 please report to testing," I hear.

"Awww..." says my friend.

"We could always play a game again another time."

"I know. I just really want to play one right now."

"I should go now."

"Bye!"

I take a transporter to testing. When I reach testing, I tell the protector my number as always. I follow the scientist right inside testing as always.

After we are in the testing room, the scientist gives me the purple drink. I drink it and then lay down on the bed.

"Hello," says the scientist.

"Hello," I reply.

"What do you like to eat?" she asks me.

"Why are you asking that question?" I reply.

"What do you like to eat?"

"Why are you asking that question?"

"What is your favorite food?"

"Why are you asking that question?"

"Do you like water?"

"Why are you asking that question?"

She hands me a purple drink.

"Drink this then lay down."

I take it and lay down after drinking it.

"End program," she says.

"Get up," she says.

I get up.

"Hmm..." she says.

"What?" I ask.

"Nothing," she says.

"What?" I ask.

"Forget it."

"What?" I ask.

"I didn't say anything."

"Yes you did."

"End program."

"Get up," says the scientist and I get up.

"Hello," I say.

"Hello," she says.

"Is everything working correctly?"

"Yes."

"We are done for now. Please drink this," she says handing me a purple drink.

I drink the purple drink.

"Please lay down now," she says.

I lay down on the bed.

"You can get up now," says the scientist.

I get up.

"You can speak normally again," says the scientist.

"Alright," I say, nodding realizing that my voice really is back to normal.

"Is testing over for today?" I ask.

"No, not yet."

"Oh."

"It will be over soon."

"I see."

"Do you have any memories of testing?"

"Well I remember going to eat when I had to use that machine... and I remember right now."

"Good."

"Why is that good?" I ask.

"It's good because you don't remember your testing."

"Oh."

"You're sure you don't remember testing at all?"

"Yes I'm sure."

"Good."

"Would you like some water?"

"Sure," I reply.

She takes a glass out of the cabinet and fills it with water.

"Here," she says handing me the glass.

"Thank you," I reply, starting to drink water after.

After I finish, I give the glass back to the scientist.

"We have some more testing to do, now that I think about it. Please drink this," she says getting a purple drink.

I drink the purple drink and then lay down.

"Get up," says the scientist.

I get up.

"Hello," she says.

"Hello," I reply.

"How are you doing?" she asks.

"Good," I reply.

"Can you remember something for me?"

"Yes."

"Can you remind me to get you a glass of water?"

"Understood. Get you a glass of water."

"Drink this and lay down," she says handing me a purple drink.

"End program," she says after I have laid down.

"Get up," she says and I get up.

"Hello," I say.

"Hello," she says.

"Can you remind me to get you a glass of water?"

"Understood. When should I remind you?"

"In at least 5 minutes if I am not talking."

"Understood."

"How are you doing?" she asks.

"Good," I reply.

"What is your favorite thing to do?"

"I don't have a favorite thing to do yet."

"Is there anything you would like to do?"

"No."

"Would you like to swim sometime soon?"

"Yes. When?"

"I don't know."

"How are you feeling?"

"I am feeling great."

"Do you like water?"

"Yes."

"Do you like to drink water?"

"It is needed to live."

"Does water have a taste?"

"No."

"Do you like to swim?"

"Yes."

"Where is the swimming pool?"

"I don't know."

"Follow me."

"Understood."

I follow the scientist outside of the room and eventually back in.

"When will we swim?"

"You said that you don't know when you can swim."

"Do you have a favorite food?" she asks.

"No," I reply.

"You told me to remind you get you a glass of water."

"Thank you for reminding me."

"Please drink this." The scientist says giving me a purple drink.

I drink it.

"Now please lay down."

I lay down on the bed.

"End program."

"Alright, your testing is over for today. It was longer than usual. You have time in the lounge right now."

I follow the scientist outside of the room and to the transporter. Once we reach it, I go in and go to the lounge.

Once I am in the lounge, I scan the room for my friend. There she is!

I run over to her "Hi!"

"Hi," she says with a worried expression on her face.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"You've been in testing for 4 days..."

"I have?"

"Yes..."

"Wow. I never thought my testing would be that long..."

"I never thought testing could be that long either.

"Well... I guess it is testing."

"What do you mean?"

"Well... We don't know what happens, and I think it's good that we don't."

"I see."

"I'm glad that we both have time in the lounge right now."

"I agree."

"Yeah..."

"I see that your voice is normal again."

"Yeah, I guess it is. How about we play game?" I suggest.

"You should just take it easy."

"That's unusual for you to say."

"I feel bad in a way. Sometimes I feel like I'm forcing you to play a game with me."

"No, you're not. I enjoy playing games with you."

"Well... I feel like I'm the only one who wins. You never win."

"Don't feel bad about it! I just enjoy playing with you, even if I don't win."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"I still don't want to play a game today. I think I need a break myself."

"Oh, alright. How about we talk about something?" I suggest.

"Sure. What should we talk about?"

"I wonder why we wear what we wear."

"What do you mean?"

"The scientists wear something else."

"I see what you mean. What they wear is different from what we wear. They are both white though."

"That's true. The test subjects wear something we take off by pulling it over our heads. It looks like the scientists wear something like that but they also wear something that they can take off more easily."

"Yeah, that. I think they take it off by pulling it off their arms."

"It looks that way."

"I wonder why the other people wear something different."

"What do you mean?" I ask.

"The people who aren't test subjects or scientists wear something different. All of those people wear the same thing."

"Like the protectors and all?"

"Yeah."

"How about we talk about something else?"

"Like what? There's nothing to talk about after they changed everything..."

"That's true."

"Remember the other day we were playing a game and then after we finished playing it once I had to go to testing?" I ask.

"Yeah..."

"Testing made it so we couldn't play."

"Well I guess we have to have testing."

"Your right. Testing interrupted our fun though."

"I see what you mean, but I don't want to know what would happen if we didn't have testing. I assume it would be something bad. I don't know, but having testing often seems normal to me."

"I guess you're right."

"I'm bored again. There's literally nothing to talk about!"

We decide to just sit there and do nothing. We sit until we have to go to our rooms for our next meal.

"All test subjects please report to your rooms for meal 3. All test subjects please report to your rooms for meal 3," we hear.

We both leave to go to our rooms.

AN: Expect the next chapter soon!
