32 - 2 Years Later
Before you read this, I am posting 3 parts at once. The 3 of these parts combined is the average length of my chapters, as this is a shorter chapter and the next two parts are both really short.
2 years later
I slowly start to open my eyes to a bright, white light. I feel something soft below me, which must be the white beds.
I don't hear the scientist.
I close my eyes again.
Where am I? What happened? Where is the scientist?
I start to feel tears coming from my eyes. The scientist is missing... She would always be here when I was finished with testing...
I should open my eyes and look around...
I slowly open my eyes yet again.
I am in a white room. Machines everywhere. White bed. White sheets. Light brown cabinets with a white countertops. A white door. A white wall. A white floor. A white ceiling. Wires attached to me.
In my mind, I seem to remember something. Something that I don't remember happening.
What I remember was being in a tank, and I know for sure that I was never in one. I remember there being people outside of it talking. I remember breaking the tank. Running around with a syringe and—
I swallow.
I have a feeling of my mouth. I want to get it out. I can feel it coming. I swallow again. I don't want the taste, but I have a strong feeling that getting it away isn't easy.
No... No... No... No...
Something else comes to mind. The thought... of other people dead...
No.... No... No.... No.... No...
"No...!" I yell, as I can't keep it in myself any longer.
A scientist in his white lab coat comes rushing in.
He takes something out, and starts doing something—I don't know what. If I were to guess, he was contacting someone.
Soon enough, someone runs into the room. This is someone I undoubtedly recognize, it is the scientist.
"You woke up?" she asks me.
I only nod my head.
In my mind, I have flashes of me running from her. Me killing another scientist.
"No!!!" escapes from my mouth.
How... could of I done that...?!
"What has happened?" she asks franticly.
Something else comes to my mind. Me... killing... many others...
"Nooo!" I yell so loud that I am convinced that everyone can hear it.
I collapse to the floor, putting my hands over my ears as I start to sob.
"Can you hear me? Can you hear me?" the scientist continues to repeat.
I ignore her. Her words seem to fade away, until I only see her shouting at me.
No! No! No! No! No! No! No! That wasn't me... was it? That couldn't have been me... It had to be someone else! No. I remember it... pretty clearly. Although I never remember it happening. What does all of this mean?! What is happening to me? Am I going insane?
I feel the scientist's hand touch my right shoulder.
"Who are you?" she asks me.
"Huh?" I ask.
"What is your number?"
Why is she asking that? She knows my number.
"9536," I reply.
She nods her head, and tells me to go lie back down.
"Here, drink this," she says, handing me a glass with a purple substance inside it.
I quickly drink the purple substance, handing it back to her when I am done.
Testing has been weird right now...
I fall asleep, wondering what will happen next.
I wake up again, noticing that I am in the same room as I was before. Everything is the same as it was before.
"I see you're awake. What is your number?" the scientist asks me, walking into the room.
Why is she asking me that again?
"9536," I reply.
"Good. Do you remember anything that you shouldn't?"
I think hard. There is nothing that I feel like I shouldn't remember. There are no memories that I don't remember happening.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure," I reply confidently.
"That's good," says the scientist.
"Is testing over yet?" I ask, out of curiosity.
"Somewhat. There was... a problem. You can't go back to the lounge yet," she tells me.
I nod my head.
"I would like you to lay back down. I have some more tests to run on you."
I nod my head again, and I lay down. She hands me another glass with the purple substance, and this is probably the millionth time I've seen it by now. I drink it and I hand it back to her when I am done. I fall asleep quickly...
I start to hear people talking.
"What are we going to do?" one asks, who I will call person one.
"We've lost so many," says another, who I will call person two.
"Scientist 136, what do you think?" person one asks.
"I don't know. She seems to have completely lost the person inside of her," says scientist 136, or my scientist.
I hear someone walking.
"We will have her stay on the list to go to the society," says yet another person.
They are talking about that society again! I haven't heard them mention it in a long time...
"Official 32, why do that?" person two asks.
"As you said, we have already lost many. If what scientist 136 says is true, then it is safe to send her there," says official 32.
They continue to talk.
"I have to leave now," official 32 eventually says, and I can hear official 32 walking away.
"That sounds a little exciting. I wonder what it is like there. They have different names for everything," says one person, who I now know as scientist 129.
"It does. Too bad we will never get to go there," says someone who I know as scientist 138.
"What do they call it when someone has something wrong with them? It's something like... I don't know. Not bug... I can't think of the word," says scientist 136.
"I can't either," says scientist 138.
"I have to get back to work," says scientist 136.
Everyone says bye to each other. I hear them all walk away, and I hear the scientist walk into the room.
I open my eyes.
"I would like you to follow me," the scientist says to me.
I follow her into a teleporter and to somewhere I have never been before.
When we get out of the teleporter, we are in a room that looks like the lounge. Gray floor. White walls. White ceiling. Blue lights. Light brown chairs and light brown tables.
The room is big, but I am not sure if it is bigger or smaller than the lounge. There are people everywhere in the lounge, all wearing the same as me.
I notice there is a door and two hallways off of this room.
"That door," says the scientist, pointing to the door I see. "Leads to the mess hall."
I nod my head.
"That hallway," the scientist says pointing to the hallway to the right. "Leads to the rooms. The other hallway leads to your classes. Your classes are where you will learn things."
I nod my head, trying to comprehend.
"I will take you to your room. You will not spend too long here," she says.
I nod my head yet again.
She takes me to my room.
"Here is your room. I have to go now," the scientist says.
"Where are my friends?" I ask.
"Well... they aren't here... I have to go," says the scientist, leaving.
I enter my new room. It is a little smaller than before. The walls, floor, and ceiling are all white. There is blue light, just like in the area that looked like a lounge. The bed and table are also white. Without the blue light, I think I would go crazy.
Days slowly start to pass, and days turn into months. I start to learn things that I never thought I would learn. I learn about this society I have always been curious about, and I get excited to learn that I will be going there. I eventually realize that my friends that I made must be long gone, but I have made new friends since.
One day, while I am in my room, someone comes in.
"I would like you to write a letter," they ask me. This person looks and sounds familiar, but I am not sure who they are. This woman is wearing a lab coat and has long dark brown hair and brown eyes.
"A letter?" I ask.
"You have something you can write on, right?" she asks me.
"Yes, I do. I can use my tablet," I reply.
"Then write something to your future self," she instructs me.
"Why?" I ask.
"Are you going to do it or not?"
"I'll do it. Is there anything in specific I should write?"
"No. You can write about anything. It just has to be to your future self," she informs me.
I nod my head, and I start writing. I never see that woman again. 2 weeks after I write the letter, we are told that we will be going to the society. We spend a week in testing, which we are told is to make sure everything has gone as planned. After that week I notice there are people missing from the group. We are told that those people were not fit to go to this society.
We leave soon after, for the unknown. We will only truly know what this society is like one we arrive. For now all we can do is dream.
AN: I have two parts after this to post! One of them is the letter that she writes, and the other one is an epilogue.
