16 - I can't be this way anymore!
"Get up," says the scientist.
"You don't have to say it like that, scientist 136!" says scientist 112.
I notice that I am in something that has walls around it, but the walls only go a few inches above the bottom.
I get out, as one of the sides is open.
"Hello," I say.
"Hello," replies scientist 136.
"Hello," says scientist 112.
"How are you?" I ask.
"I'm doing fine. What about you, scientist 136?" scientist 112 asks.
"I am doing fine as well. What about you?" scientist 136 asks, facing me.
"I'm doing fine. Thanks for asking," I reply.
"This is going good so far," says scientist 112.
"What has been going good?" I ask.
"Our conversation."
"Oh. Anyway, where are we?"
"We are somewhere else in testing. We had to bring you to this room because of your testing."
"That makes sense."
"You can go back the lounge now," she says.
"Alright," I say nodding my head.
I leave the room, feeling some sort of rage building up inside me.
I get on the transporter, trying to dismiss the rage. I think about other things instead, such as going to talk to my friends.
When I get to the lounge, I notice how busy it is. I guess I never noticed before how many people were here. I knew that plenty of other people would be in the lounge, but I guess I never really realized how many there actually was.
I look for one of my friends, but I don't see them. I sit down on a chair and watch everyone, in hope to see them.
Time goes by, and eventually we are all told to go to the Mess Hall. I hear the word everyone, and remember that it seems I am hearing things differently. I am angry at that fact, but I hide my anger.
While at meal 2, I don't sit next to any of my friends. I wanted to, but I couldn't find any of them. So I ate in silence, hoping to get to talk to my friends soon.
Soon after I am finished eating, we are all told to go to the lounge. I get up and put my tray in the correct place. I then take a transporter to the lounge.
In the lounge, I look for my friends again, but I don't see them. Eventually I find one of them.
"Hi!" I say to them.
"Hi..." she replies sadly.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"You went missing for days!" she says.
"Wait... I was missing for days?" I ask.
"Yes."
"My testing must have been really long."
"Yeah, it must have been. I'm sort of wondering what they were doing. Don't you wonder?"
"I guess," I say, as I'm not wondering that much what was happening during testing.
"How about we play a game? There's a fun game I want to show you."
"Alright."
She gets out the game and teaches me how to play.
"So, do you want to play it?" she asks.
"Sure!" I say.
The game we are playing is a game where we have to get our game board pieces to the other side first. There are obstacles along the way that put you at different places. Some of them require you to go back a certain amount of spaces, while others take away a turn. There are also short cuts that help you get to the end quicker.
My friend takes the first move, and takes the path farthest to the right.
Then it is my turn, and I decide to take the forward path.
My friend then touches the card pile. She then presses and button and it comes up with a number. She moves forward 5 spaces.
It is now my turn, and I touch the card pile to get a card. It says, "You get a head start your first day. Add 3 to the number of spaces you move." I then touch the button to find the number of spaces I will move and it says 3. I then move 6 spaces.
On game board, "Day 1 Ended," comes up. It then says, "Day 2." The words fade away.
My friend goes, and moves forward 6 spaces.
On my turn the card I touch says, "Someone has promised to send you supplies. You can only pick one, so pick wisely." The card also says the options, which are: Extra Storage, Rope, 1 weapon, or 1 light. I pick the rope.
We continue to play, and the game starts out easy. A few rounds after we started I pick up a card that says, "You must make a decision. To your left there are rumors of a beast, but there is a sign warning you of the beast to your right." I decide to go right.
We continue to play, the game slowly getting harder. When it started out, we both were having it pretty easy. Now we are getting more bad events.
Eventually we finally finish the game.
"Did you like it?" my friend asks me.
"That was fun, but it was really long," I say.
"I see. It is a long game."
"I enjoyed it though. It would be a game I would play again."
"Do you want to play it again now?" she asks.
"I'm tired out from playing it once. Maybe another time."
"Alright, that's fine with me."
"Do you like this game?" I ask.
"Yes! I do. I never get tired of it, but not many people like it. I think it's because of how long it can be."
"That makes sense."
"What does?" she asks.
"You said you don't think many people like it because of the length."
"Oh. That's the only reason I could come up with. One person I played it with only played it once. They said they enjoyed it, but never wanted to play it again."
"Maybe they were just saying they enjoyed it."
"That's true. They seemed to be having fun though."
"Hmm.... It probably is that then."
"Do you want to play another game?" she asks.
"Not really."
"I see. What should we do then?"
"How about we just talk?"
"That's a good idea. Do you like playing games?" she asks.
"Yes."
"Do you like the food in the Mess Hall?"
"I don't really have an opinion. The food is fine."
"I don't really have an opinion either. The food can't be different, anyway."
"I think the bosses of the scientists can eat more foods..."
"Really? I guess they deserve it, being a boss of the scientists."
"Yeah..." I say even though I don't agree.
It's not fair. They shouldn't be able to pick what they eat because they are a boss. We all should get to pick.
"I wonder what it would be like being a boss..." she says.
"It must be hard."
"I wonder how many bosses there are... I can't imagine there is only one."
"Yeah. I would assume there are plenty," I say.
"How about we talk about something else?"
"That's a good idea. Hmm.... What should we talk about? We could talk about that game."
"Talk about it? What do you mean by that?"
"Like talk about it... I'm wondering how they made up the things in the game."
"Yeah. I'm wondering that too. They must have just made up the things by what sounded good. I don't know."
"Maybe that's what they did. They must have done a good job though."
"Yeah, they would have had to."
"What's your favorite object in the game out of the weapon, light, or rope?" I ask.
"I don't know. Maybe the light since it helps you see."
"I would say... the weapon."
"Really? Why is that?"
"You could get to the end quicker."
Is it really that? Is it really because you could get to the end quicker if some monster comes? No... The "weapon" sounds interesting. I wish it was real. That would be really nice. Then I could get rid of people.... No! I can't think that! What am I thinking?
"I think I see what you mean. You could get rid of enemies. Is that what you mean?"
"Yeah..."
"The weapon, light, and rope are all useful. If I started with them all, that would be fun."
"That would be fun. Although then the game would probably get a lot easier."
"That's true."
"So maybe it's better that you don't start with all of those. The game starts out easy anyway, so that's probably why you don't start out with anything."
"I never thought of it that way."
"You didn't?"
"No."
"Anyway, what should we talk about now?"
"I don't know..."
"We could talk about the weapon in the game."
"I don't really want to."
"Oh. I wonder when we will be going back to our rooms."
"Why are you wondering? Do you want to spend time in your room?"
"No, not really. I was just wondering."
"Oh. I find how they change when things are every day confusing. Don't you?"
"It can be confusing. Why not just have things at the same time every day? That would make things easier."
"I guess they just don't want things to be easy," says my friend.
"I guess so," I say laughing a little. My friend starts laughing a little too.
"I really enjoy being your friend," says my friend.
"I do too. I'm glad that I got to be friends with you."
"I enjoy spending more time with you than other friends. I feel like you've changed..."
"I've changed?"
"Forget it. It's probably just me."
"Alright. Is it just me, or has this day been going on and on?"
"I think it might just be you."
"You're probably right."
"I hope neither of us have testing soon," she says.
"Why is that?" I ask.
"If any of us have testing today, then we will probably not get to talk or play a game or anything more today."
"That would be alright if it happened, right? There's always tomorrow. I'm probably not having testing again since I came back from it today. Have you had testing today?" I ask.
"No, I haven't."
"Then there's a pretty big chance you will have it, right?"
"Yeah. I hope I don't though."
"Testing isn't that bad, is it?"
"I guess not."
"See? It wouldn't matter if you had it today."
"You are so nice to me..."
"I am?"
"Yeah."
"I guess I'm a nice person then."
"You're really nice! You know the right things to say!"
"I... do?"
"Yeah. That's a good thing," she says.
"Do you want to play a game?" I ask.
"Not really. Maybe another time."
"That's fine. I'm not that much in the mood to play a game myself."
"Then why did you ask?"
"I don't know. I guess it was to see if you wanted to play one."
"Oh."
"I feel like we have been talking for the longest time," I say.
"You think so?"
"Yeah."
We then hear an announcement that we have to go to our rooms.
"I'll see you later," I say to my friend.
"Yeah, see you later."
I then go to my room. While in my room, my mind comes back to the fact that I am hearing things differently.
Why do I keep on going back to that? Does it actually matter?
Then... something hits me. When I hear for everyone to go places when others hear for just test subjects to go.... That might not be the only thing!
What if there was other things I wasn't hearing right? What if I was hearing everything differently? What if I was hearing things differently to keep things from me? Who should I trust, and who shouldn't I trust? No. For now I have to dismiss these thoughts! I'm going crazy!
I then sit on my bed, waiting for when we will be going back to the lounge. I want to have fun with my friend more.
After what feels like forever, I hear an announcement to go to the lounge. Yes!
I quickly go the lounge, waiting for my friend. I see her come into the lounge.
"Hello!" I say to her.
"Hi," she replies.
"I feel like it's been forever!"
"It hasn't been that long."
"I guess not."
We continue to talk, and eventually we have to go to the Mess Hall. I sit with my friend during meal 3.
"Let's play more games after this!" I tell her half-way through meal 3.
"That's fine with me. Do you want to play the game where one person describes something and the other person has to guess what it is?"
"Sure! I wanted to play that game anyway."
"That's great then!"
We continue to eat in silence, as we don't have much to talk about. We have been running out of things to talk about.
After we are finished eating, we quickly go to the Lounge. We meet each other in the Lounge. We then sit down on two of the chairs in the room that are right next to each other.
We play the game until we have to go back to our rooms. In the end, we played at least 10 rounds.
"Bye," I say.
"Bye. I'll see you tomorrow," my friend says.
"That game sure wore me out, what about you?" I ask as we are walking.
"Yeah. We played for a while."
"Well bye," I say as we go to our rooms.
Once I am in my room, I come back to the fact that I am hearing things differently.
I thought I decided I wouldn't think about this! Oh right... it was for now... I have to do something! I can't be just a test subject. I have to be more... I don't know how. I need to make some sort of plan. A plan against everyone. I can't be this way anymore. I have to go against all of this!
AN: I finished this yesterday but I decided to post it today.
