Chapter 2: Processing

It was Mile's first time on a plane. The private airbus was enormous and reserved only for winners of the contest. Butterflies filled his stomach during take-off as the G-Force pressed him back into his seat.
The inside of the cabin was a pristine white, with leather chairs. Everywhere Miles looked, there were ornate decorations and signs of wealth.
Cocktail servers wore white cloth masks and brought the passengers' food and beverage. The inflight entertainment involved live shows, including magic, music, and comedy.
Soon, the flight landed on a small Island just a few hours west of San Diego. Miles was a little sad to exit after what felt like too short of a time. However, his excitement for what lay ahead was much more significant.
When Miles stepped out into the sun, he could see the entrance to the park. An opening spanned one hundred feet wide and led into the thousand-acre property, with a dome of tinted hexagons encasing every square mile.
The entrants were greeted by a group of workers in white suits, wearing identical cloth masks to the servers on the plane. Each directed the ticket holders to form multiple lines for processing. One of the employees referred Miles to the line furthest to his left.
Miles had about twenty people in front of him, but one, in particular, caught his eye. A blue-haired woman in her twenties stood alone just in front of him. She was fidgeting with a pair of ripped skinny jeans. Piercings and tattoos covered her head to toe.
She glanced at Miles, and he quickly averted his gaze, hoping she wouldn't notice.
After another minute, Miles stole another look at her, but her cold stare met him. She had been watching him the whole time and waiting.
"I think I know you." She said.
Her statement caught Miles off guard. "What? No, I don't think-"
The name popped into Miles' head. Wendy.
"High school," Wendy filled the silence. "Like five years ago. You looked a lot different. Miles, right?"
Memories flooded Miles, overflowing him with realizations. Wendy was an old classmate of his, but in his recollection, she barely knew he existed at the time.
He was stumped. "Yeah, How do you remember that?"
Wendy looked insulted. "You used to stare at me in Biology for hours."
Hot lava filled Mile's face. "I'm sorry. I was a real awkward kid."
She giggled at him. "You're still awkward as hell. You should've drank more on the plane."
"You've got me there; better be more inside! Maybe we can catch up on other awkward high school stories if you'd be interested?" Miles replied, failing to sound smooth.
Wendy smirked. "I might just take you up on that."
The young woman turned around as a worker called her for processing, and Miles was named shortly after.
A tall male employee walked Miles into a white room and asked him to put all his electronic devices, including his phone, into a bucket on the table.
Then a shorter female worker approached and set down a document over four hundred pages long.
"Your belongings will be returned at the end of your stay. Please read over the agreement and sign when you are ready to continue." She said blankly.
Miles stared at the papers and estimated it would take around twelve hours to read front to back.
He questioned the employee. "Do I have to read the entire thing?"
She replied, still emotionless. "You must at least read the Non-disclosure Agreement's terms on the front. It is of utmost importance."
Miles skimmed it and signed his name on the dotted line.
"Can I go now?" He asked impatiently.
She picked up Mile's forms and exited the room without saying anything. Then a door across from him opened up.
"I'll take that as a yes." Miles thought to himself.
