Chapter 1: Lottery
Hey! If you like it leave a like or a comment! I'll write more no matter what because I love this concept and have a looooooong outline done.
Miles had his face pressed to his computer screen. The clock read 2:03 A.M. while he begged and pleaded. "Come on. Come on."
The monitor's blue light bounced off Mile's dark eyes as he refreshed the internet page without blinking. The twenty-three-year-old was a recluse from socializing since high school. It was not an unusual state to find him in.
Miles rarely had time to do more than run from his responsibilities. He would involve himself in toxic relationships and never truly explore his passions. After each heartbreak, he would withdraw further into himself and away from family or the only two friends he had known since childhood.
The only thing Miles felt he had going was his obsession: Video games. All he wanted to do was game, but he never felt fulfilled through thousands of devoted hours. The rush and adrenaline faded far too quickly for him.
Then the announcement came, and it gave his life new meaning. The world's most famous social media influencer, Bryce Stevens, was opening a new kind of amusement park. This one was revolutionary.
Bryce claimed to have spent over one billion dollars developing augmented reality that had previously been impossible. Rumors spread that the park spanned over a thousand acres, with four unique and interactive worlds. It would be like living in a video game.
The catch came when Bryce revealed a lottery of only two hundred tickets for the grand opening. You may apply as often as you like on his Sports Drink Website; the only requirements were to be eighteen or older and provide identification on arrival.
Once Miles heard this, he started a three-day mouse-clicking binge, hoping to secure one of the two-hundred tickets for himself. Miles wouldn't even stop to eat and rarely used the cup he had set aside for faster relief. At 2:04 A.M., he collapsed onto the floor and slept sixteen hours.
Time felt as if it blinked. Mile's eyes snapped open, and he launched himself back to the computer and couldn't believe what he saw.
Mile's fists shot up high. "I got one.... I GOT ONE!"
His gleeful screams filled the apartment, causing Mile's father to burst through his door.
"What the hell is going on in here?" His dad said with a wry smile.
Miles turned to his pop and hugged him. "I won the ticket! All expenses paid, three days at Bryce Steven's New Park!"
I'm happy for you, son. But when you get back, you need to start thinking about returning to school and getting prepared. I can't keep cleaning up after you, and video games aren't helping you."
Miles let go of his dad and couldn't look him in the eye. He knew he was right, and a sudden ocean of shame washed over him. It always followed his waves of compulsive patterns.
"I'm sorry. I know it will happen. I'm just figuring out where to go and what to do."
Mile's father sighed at this. "You're doing fine. I just don't want you to struggle as I did. I wish you could see that."
Silence hung between them for more a moment. Neither could find more words, so Mile's dad stepped out of his room and closed the door. Miles noticed many things he would get passionate about caused his father stress, and he felt guilty for it.
But instead of focusing on his father's wise words, Miles started to pack his bag. He had a flight to catch.
