The Ringing

"I really hate lockers," Kayla said as she struggled to open hers.

I tapped my foot impatiently and hopped up and down in my spot. "We're going to miss the bus."

"Karley." She whined while looking at me. "I need my library book."

I walked up to her and placed my hand on top of her shoulder. "We'll get it on Monday. Now come on before we miss the bus. Our school is on a mountain and if you think I'm walking down it you're nuts." I said trying to pull her away from her locker.

Kayla finally gave in and allowed me to pull her away from her locker.

"Now I have to wait for all the way until Monday to find out if Allison and Dan got away from the haunted island." She said talking about her book.

I laughed as we approached the front doors of the school. My smile quickly faded when I saw our bus heading down the hill and away from school. We missed the bus.

"UGH!" I groaned. "We missed it!"

"Darn," Kayla said. "Can't your mom-"

"She's at work," I said. "And my dad is at his parent's house for two days babysitting the dogs."

Kayla nodded. "Yeah, my parents are busy too..." She said.

We both sighed and looked at each other. "Guess we should start walking huh?"

"Yeah," Kayla said. "But lets cut through the graveyard. It's faster." She said pointing ahead of us.

I looked at the graveyard a few feet away from our school. It wasn't that big of a graveyard. Probably had at least one hundred graves. As I looked at it I shivered. I did take the short cut through there but it would be faster.

We started walking towards the graveyard and I listened to Kayla as she talked about an essay she has to do for Biology class. Kayla was in the eighth grade and I was in the seventh. We were best friends.

We were now in the graveyard and Kayla took out her phone for pictures. Not of us but the graves. It was her first time being in a graveyard.

"Wow, do you ever just think about it?" She said.

I looked at her confused. "Think about what?"

"Death." She said.

"I try not to," I said.

"Isn't it weird how about in 20 years, some of us will be dead. Or 15 years or 10 or 5 or even two months." She looked at the graves. "We'll be buried and who knows what will happen next. We don't even know what to expect or what we'll see."

"Kayla!" I said loudly. "Can you not. That sounds depressing and scary to think about. We're alive now. Let's just be happy about it."

Kayla smiled then placed her phone inside her pocket. "You get scared so easily."

I stopped when I started hearing sounds. Sounded like some weird ringtone. The sounds of the ringtone went Ding...DingDing...Ding...DingDing.

Kayla stopped and looked around.

"I thought you didn't have a phone?" She said looking at me.

I looked at her pocket. "I don't. Isn't that your phone?"

"No." She looked at me with huge eyes.

Kayla started following the direction of the sound which lead her to a grave that had no tombstone. There was just a lump of dirt. The ringing came from underneath it.
