Back to life

The room seemed to fill with bodies and all eyes were on Luna. What had seemed like a never-ending room soon felt small and hot. Eli guarded her, standing over her as she fought for her life. He knew he was outnumbered now but all he was worried about was Luna.

Joe fumbled her words as panic ran through her. She ran her hands through her hair taking the red bandana out and letting her hair down. She looked at Eli and then back at Theo who was becoming impatient.

Theo placed his heavy bag down on the floor and gave Joe another irritable look "So?" He pointed over at the table where Luna laid. Theo was a man of few words. When he spoke he was blunt.

" It was all my fault. I was nervous after all of you had left. Only the two of us left here to defend our selves and after the last time.." Joe rushed her words her voice becoming tearful as she paused.

" I heard the alarm go off and this time it was in our building, I panicked. I took one look at the blond girl then over at the bright blue eyes and she wasn't wearing a mask so I thought she was one of them.." She broke out in a sob as Lilly came to comfort her.

She regained her posture looking back at the others "This is Eli, he isn't like the others out there, he's different. He's not one of them. And the young lady on the table who I shot is Luna. And we are going to help them, no matter what"

Joe stood up, her head held confidently as she smiled back at Eli, wiping her tears.

Eli could see she was a good person and he knew Luna would feel the same about her.

Theo stood up and walked over to the table looking down at the new face of the injured girl. He studied her, he could feel Eli's eyes on him but he didn't care. He studied her face. He wanted to see her eyes just to make sure. He knew deep down Joe could never lie to him but this world they now lived him made you hard, trusting was almost impossible.

Just as he studied her long dark lashes that seem to flutter Luna's eyes opened. He was met with the hue of the forest, like the green that brings the earth back to life in the spring.

Theo took a step back almost in shock that she had opened them just for him, so he could see she was just like him.

Human.

The other's in the room seemed to have accepted Joe's reasons and were happy to help Luna and Eli. Everyone seemed to have their jobs and went off to get to work like nothing had happened, apart from Theo.

He waited, silently watching the injured girl and the strange bot that seemed to guard her. Thoughts ran through his mind. How did she control him? Could he do the same? Who was this girl? She was different from anyone he had ever seen. No one had ever controlled a bot.

He pulled out a book and a pencil and crossed his legs glancing over every so often.

Luna finally came out from the temperature that she had battled with over the last 24 hours. Her eyes fluttered as sweat beads ran from her forehead. She opened her eyes and was met with Eli's smile.

"Hey" He helped her sit up a little.

"Hey" Luna gave Eli a weak smile back as she spoke with a raspy voice.

Luna looked over to the new face that greeted her from the other chair. His dark brown eyes met hers and then he looked back at his book almost ignoring her.

Joe rushed over with some more water for Luna, fluffing her pillow trying to make her feel as comfortable as possible.

The large room filled up with the most incredible smell. Luna's stomach growled like a beast. She couldn't remember the last time she had eaten.

Luna almost fell from her makeshift bed. The scent of Rosemary and thyme came floating from the kitchen.

"Grubs up" Another voice shouted across the room ringing an old bell as bodies raced to the very long, heavy chipped wooden table at the other end of the long room.

Old mismatched chairs were tucked under the table as another person set the bowls out. The sound was incredible. Luna couldn't help but smile, it seemed like she was in a dream. She had only seen tables full of food and people in old video clips, never in real life. She took a deep breath tying to hide her smile.

Everyone took their place at the table. Lilly and Joe pulled two extra chairs out and all the faces at the table looked back at Luna and Eli.

"Well, are you joining us or what?" Eli smiled and looked at Luna "fancy some food"

Luna swung her legs over the side of the bed very weakly and tried to stand up by her self. She felt a shooting pain in her abdomen as stood making her groan from the pain. She took a deep breath and put one foot in front of the other.

She wobbled at first, almost falling over but Eli grabbed her arms helping her over slowly until they reached the long table.

There must have been at least 12 of them all along the long table. She could feel all the eyes on her as she smiled back at faces. The others were wondering if bots even ate food.

She had not seen so many faces all at once for such a long time, it was overwhelming.

She noticed the dark brown eyes were right next to her this time, but the stranger didn't say a word, he just seemed to watch her like the others. He was cautious and didn't smile, he stood out to Luna as different from the others.

The others were friendly and chatty and pleasant. Joe smiled over at Luna and gestured to tuck in.

A hot steamy bowl of soup was placed in front of her, along with some crackers, making her almost drool because the smell was so good. She could see fresh potatoes and vegetables, real ones!

Luna picked up the large dirty looking spoon and took a mouthful of soup almost burning her mouth because she was so weak and hungry. Her taste buds tingled as the flavours bounced all over her mouth. This was fresh, she had never eaten fresh food.

Luna felt so human sat around the long table, eating the fresh food and conversing with the new faces. Her green eyes seem to sparkle with a new lease of life.

Maybe this is exactly what she had been looking for? A family, a home.

She noticed Eli was quiet and hardly touched his bowl of soup. He seemed to be on edge.

Joe couldn't apologise enough during dinner. Luna lost count of the number of times she had said the word sorry.

Luna would catch Lilly watching her and then looking away as she noticed followed by a giggle.

Luna signed across the table to Lilly. "You can sign?" Joe almost shouted at Luna in excitement.

"Yes, well, only a little. I was taught as a child. After I lost my parents. But it has been a while, so I apologise if I get things wrong" Luna signed as she spoke so Lilly would understand her. Lilly's smile was so contagious and bright, she was so happy Luna could sign too. It was only Joe and Theo that had picked it up as children themselves.

"There aren't many people who can communicate with sign language anymore, so this is great Luna. I'm sure Lilly will be overjoyed"

Darkness came quickly after tea. The large room was lit up by small fairy lights making it look cosy and warm.

Eli didn't want to stay, nothing about this place felt welcoming to him. He couldn't trust anyone, only Luna. He couldn't seem to rest.

" Can I show you the roof Luna?" Joe pulled gently at luna's hand. Luna could see the excitement in Joes eyes, like a child she hopped from one foot to the other.

"Of course I would love to see the roof, Joe"

Luna looked back at Eli and waved him over "You coming?"

Eli smiled and jumped up quickly following behind them as Joe led them up the long narrow stairs.

They reached a heavy door with a large handle that looked like a steering wheel. Joe opened the door and led them out to the nights sky.

The roof top was huge and spread out the hole length of the building. They had cleverly used old broken stones and piled them up on the edges of the roof. In the centre stood a large glass house. It was covered in grey nets the colour of the bricks.

Joe led them over to the glass house and opened the door. Luna could see the fruits and vegetables glowing in the dark. Even in the dark night they were a beautiful sight to behold.

Luna took a deep breath as she took in her surroundings "how?"
