Episode 1: Halloween Invite
The crisp fall air breezed on my skin, bundling myself up in my black coat as I see my apartment building.
Maryland is so beautiful in the fall, colorful leaves surrounding the road and grass. Seeing my apartment building, I entered quickly since night has fallen.
This is the last time I work until eleven p.m., I kept telling my boss that no one comes around the store this late.
But she responded in a factual tone: "customers buys comics anytime." I'm glad I live ten minutes away so it's walking distance but Halloween is near and things get creepy.
Last night a woman asked me for the time, I told her but she continued to follow me until I got home. She just left and went the other direction. I never seen her before, she didn't threaten me or hurt me but it was still weird.
Glancing back and forth, it's kind of deserted right now, which is good but my paranoia gets into overdrive. The wind whistling is the only sound, hearing voices behind me.
I turned quickly but nothing was there. Entering the building, I press the elevator button and the lift comes immediately.
My apartment two doors down, I unlocked it quickly when I see the door numbers 53 and entered the cold apartment.
"Shit," I muttered going to the thermostat and turning up the hear. Talia must have left it on before she left. Its been a week since she left to visit her parents in New York, her mom was admitted to the hospital for dehydration because of all the hard work she does at her job.
I met her and she's so cool, strict but cool and one of the best cooks I know. I think that's why Talia's not back yet.
Taking off my jacket, I head to my room and switched the light on. Changing from my work clothes to my pajamas, I go into the kitchen to make some tea and go to bed but I hear a loud knock on the door. Making my heart beat so fast startled, I clutched my chest to calm myself and approach the door.
"Talia forgot her key again," I shook my head. She's lucky I came home early. Looking in the peephole, no one is there.
I unlock the chain and peek through the crack, hearing small laughter. How are kids are playing around the hallway this time of night?
Before I close the door, I see two envelopes on the mat. Picking them up slowly, both mine and Talia's name on the back.
"Hmm," closing the door but it's blocked. Turning around and seeing a tired Talia, luggage on her arms.
"Girl, I almost missed the train. I literally had to run after it," breathing out she slumped on the couch. "Some dumb a** guy telling me a lady shouldn't run after a train. What the f**k? Like he knows my life! I flipped him off and said to shove it. Ugh." she finished, closing her eyes and laying back. Her raven hair rough on her forehead, I raised an eyebrow and locked the apartment behind me. Throwing the envelopes on the coffee table.
"How's your mom Talia?" I asked a bit amused, going to the kitchen and filling the kettle with water.
"She's great! The doctor told her to eat more but other than that she's healthy. She's been skipping lunch while she's at work," she explained.
"Oh wow. It's great to hear that she's ok." Finding tea bags in the cabinet, placing them on the counter.
"Oh my gosh, Jennette! Where did you get these invites?!" Talia screaming in excitement.
"What invites?" I questioned.
"We're going!" She said standing on her feet.
"Wait what are they?" I asked confused. She simply showed the open invite to me, grabbing it and taking in the brown flyer
I shrugged, wondering what the big deal was. "Ok so you wanna go, we'll go," I told her.
She scoffed and said "you have no idea do you?" I shook my head in a 'i don't know' gesture.
"This is one of the biggest events ever! Such gore and chills when you enter. I heard a guy had explosive diarrhea because he's was so frightened." She laughed at the statement.
I'm all for Halloween, I like a good scare but to scare someone enough to release their bowels is a bit much. I heard the whistling of the kettle and head back to the kitchen to make my tea.
She told me she's going to bed, I grunt out an answer and she slammed her bedroom door. I start to look for the cream and sugar. It can be fun.
Episode 2: Haunted House
Kids and adults alike walking down the street, this is one of the biggest parties in town where everyone is invited. We decided to go simple tonight: skinny jeans, black flowy top and a cobweb witch hat.
Talia wearing black skinny jeans, red halter, wire tail and whiskers. We weren't so extravagant for costumes, it's not a costume party but we agreed to sprinkle some spook in our outfits.
The invite said to arrive at nine, groups going in the same direction as us. Talia was so excited for tonight, she rambled on about how much better this will be than Six Flags Scarefest last year.
I hope she's right, the rollercoaster got stuck all night and they had to cancel. The huge house coming into view, my jaw dropped at how spooky yet classy it is.
Light burgundy bricks, black roofs complimented the night sky clouds coming together over the house.
"Wow," both me and Talia said in awe of the dwelling. The crowd muttered in surprise too, excited and anticipating. The creak of the door opened slightly, but nothing or nobody comes out. We all wait, I'm a bit confused of what is happening.
"Enter if you dare," the voice echoed through our ears. Everyone starts their feet, walking toward the house in fast motion. I hesitate a bit, the entire situation felt like deja vu or a dream I had. An empty cold feeling hits my stomach and goosebumps on my arm whenever I get nervous. Talia pulled my arm, moving forward to the house.
Episode 3: If you Dare
The empty living room of beige walls, brown curtains, dim lighting and hanging chandelier is ominous and silent. The crowd has dispersed in different directions, oohing and wondering. I still stood in the middle of the room, rubbing my arms to lessen the goosebumps.
Talia joined everyone else, i didn't get a chance to see where they went. The familiar surroundings confused me, my head turning left and right remembering the white open door in front of me. Moving my feet to it since it's the only bright light here. I touch the dusty doorframe, a stove, fridge.
A moldy, musty smell hits my nose, scrunching my face of the stench and looking up the ceiling. Green brown mold fuzz are everywhere on top.
"Sick," I exited disgusted, the once dim living room is now dark. My fingers touch the wall, walking slowly on the hardwood floor.
"Talia?!" I yelled out but it's quiet. Where did everyone go? I reached for my phone, pressing the button for light. It blinded my eyes, squinting at the screen to call Talia. But then remembering that we both set our phone on silent. Turning the phone around to illuminate the room, spinning around to find the front door. Rustling sounds beside me, footsteps winding close and then stops. I flashed the light next to me, seeing a shrouded figure by the corner.
Screaming in terror, running the other direction almost tripping on a step. Flashing the light and it shows a short staircase.
Walking slowly to not make a sound, step by step down the empty basement. The light on my phone dimming, looking at the screen to set it on high. "Talia?! I screamed for her again, but she doesn't answer.
"Hello?!" No one muttered, no breaths. A scaly hand touches my skin, muffling my shriek and dragging me by the heels of my feet as I flailed in struggle.
*****
My sister gave me the idea of the story while we talked on the phone. An short story for my wip Beautiful, Dirty, Rich. A bit of an scary introduction for what to expect in the story. The title is her idea too, so I want to dedicate to her because she's so amazing. Thank you so much for reading and inviting me to the first Halloween anthology!! <3<3<3
