nine
*too lazy to proofread*
Danny was ten years old when she began to wonder just about what was happening. They were on year three of America. She knew they weren't immigrants; they would have probably kept their real names if that were the case. She knew damn well they weren't here on some diplomatic bull shit. They also would've kept their names at that point.
They weren't spies, were they? Varvara and Sergey hadn't told either of the girls much; just that they were gonna have the surname Lewis now and that Danny's first name was now Harley. That's it. They didn't question it further.
Danny had her pillow hugged against her chest. Sergey pushed the door open and set down her laundry basket. "Hey, blue, you okay?" He asked. "When mom and Mae get back, can I talk to you guys?" They asked. "That's fine." He shut the door before walking away. Danny flipped through channels. They had gotten a TV put in both her and Mae's room. After around thirty minutes, she heard the door open and heard Mae's feet pounding upstairs. She heard Mae's door open and close.
They didn't want her to here this.
Danny stood up and walked downstairs, seeing her mother put the groceries on the counter. "I ran into Iris at the store. Aurora's doing another pageant up in Boston. Maybe we should go? I already have the day off then." Varvara asked as she put a carton of milk in the fridge. "I don't see why not. I can probably get the day off. When is it?" Sergey shrugged as he put a cracker box in the pantry.
"The twelfth." She replied. "Okay. So just three days from now." He shut the pantry door. "Hey." Danny said, making her presence known. "Oh, my. Danny, you scared me for a second there. What's up?" Varvara sat at the table, as did Danny and Sergey.
"Why are we here?" She asked and the couple looked at one another. "What exactly do you mean?" Sergey asked. "Why did we come to America? Why were we suddenly the Lewis family? Why were you suddenly my dad and Mae was suddenly my sister? Why?" They pressed on.
"Well...no point in lying to you." Sergey began but Varvara stopped him. "Sergey, I don't know." She shook her head. "Varvara, we were the ones who asked to bring our children here. We got them involved in this. They'll probably take up this work when they're older. She should know, okay?" He said.
"Fine. Go ahead."
Sergey inhaled and he exhaled. "We're here on an espionage mission to collect information for the Russian government. That's the short and sweet of it." He answered.
"So we're spies?"
"Yes. Well, me and your mother are."
"How much longer are we gonna be here?" Danny asked. She had made friends. Aurora, Clover, Kate. She didn't really have any friends her age. "I don't know, kiddo." He shrugged. Unsure of how to react, Danny just stood up and walked away.
