"Babae ka ba ni Cross? Huh?!" galit na tanong ng lalaking humawak kay Misaki. Masyadong mahigpit ang pagkakakapit niya sa dalaga. Upang 'di sumabog sa galit, huminga ng malalim si Misaki.
An unpleasant thought surfaced in her mind, 'Do I really look like I'm gonna be into that stupid ice cube?'
Despite her waning patience, Misaki repeatedly composed herself. She resorted to the simple practice of mentally counting sheep in order to quell her irritation at the situation. But even this seemingly straightforward task proved to be challenging for her.
Before providing a response to the man, Misaki took the time to convince herself, 'Chill out, Misaki. Stay cool.'
"No," Misaki responded with brevity, avoiding direct eye contact by keeping her gaze fixed on the ground. She made a conscious effort to prevent them from identifying her as the scion.
In alternate circumstances, she might have asserted her dominance by meeting their gaze so they would submit to her authority. But she found herself in a precarious situation at that moment. She knew that displaying such confidence would not be good amidst the ongoing chaos.
Misaki possesses a compelling gaze capable of ensnaring individuals in an abyss of emptiness. When she peers into your eyes, it feels as though she can discern the depths of your tormented soul. Her captivating eyes draw you into a void, a perception that remained unchanged until her encounter with Cross.
Within their organization, those particular eyes were considered distinctive. Only one individual had such eyes that were renowned among all members—Faith. She had been taught to cultivate that unique trait. Over time, the joyful expression in her eyes faded, leaving them devoid of emotion. It was believed that such an austere visage was fitting for the successor of their lineage.
Referred to as the Emperor of AOZORA, the name of the group recognized as Darkside's most formidable and elite secret intelligence unit, she stands as the designated successor of the Yakuza Clan destined to govern the Darkside and supersede the current Master. Possessing eyes that exude an aura of captivating oblivion and bearing an Eirias that commands reverence and fear among all members of the Darkside, she operates under the guise of Faith, concealing her true identity as Ayuzawa Misaki.
However what instills fear and garners admiration from many is currently undergoing a challenging trial.
Hearing Eliazar's loud and foolish laughter, Misaki realized he was trying to pull her closer which made her even more frustrated. She prefers not to be approached without a valid reason, as in Japan, it is the norm for people to show respect by kneeling and bowing in her presence.
Misaki was brought up with the belief that she was distinct from the other individuals in the Darkside, akin to royalty, with the rest being her subordinates. This teaching was deeply instilled in her mind, leading her to trust only in herself. She remained mindful that those she encountered were not inherently allies nor enduring companions.
Numerous sounds of groans and shouts echoed in the area, resonating like thunder and lightning with their incredible strength and volume. But her concentration was unwaveringly fixed on Eliazar who was firmly clutching her arm.
"Hands off me. Now," her strict command to him. But he appeared oblivious to her demands and instead increased his grip on Misaki.
She closed her eyes in anguish. Despite her long-sleeved uniform, she could still feel his nails piercing her skin.
Eliazar smiled in a way that suggested he was deriving pleasure from her pain. Not content with the current situation, he attempted to draw Misaki nearer to him. Little did he realize the consequences he would face once Misaki became angered.
Misaki expressed her displease fervently in her thoughts, 'I really hate it when someone don't listen to what I'm saying. but I abhor those who touches me like they're entitled to do so!'
Her patience has waned as evidenced by the expression of frustration on her face. Besides the pain in her rib and the still-bleeding wound on her neck, she was enduring the discomfort of his forceful grab on her. This has heightened her already intense feelings of anger.
Misaki seized Eliazar's hand and proceeded to twist it. He vocalized his pain through a groan and vehemently cursed at her. Despite feeling the urge to retaliate and curse back at him, Misaki refrained from doing so as the pain in her ribs was unbearable. So she chose to simply fixate a piercing gaze upon him.
Despite Eliazar spitting in her face, Misaki decided to overlook his disrespect, simply wiping away the saliva with her hand before proceeding to forcefully kick him in the knee. Her main focus was on asserting her dominance by demanding his submission through this physical gesture which she saw as a significant source of triumph and validation.
'Come on, kneel in front of me and beg for my mercy, asshole. But even if you do, I'm not gonna give you what you want. I'm no saint, everybody knows that,' Misaki derided Eliazar internally.
Her lack of kindness in her heart has led to many people shedding blood and even losing their lives. Some of them even feel the need to kneel down and subject themselves to humiliation, hoping to gain pity from her.
Eliazar fell to the ground and let out a deep groan of distress. Trying to release himself, he tried to strike Misaki's hand which was firmly holding his now-bent arm. But she quickly retaliated by forcefully kicking him to the ground and placing a foot on his cheek.
He expressed his thoughts loudly as Misaki persisted in exerting pressure on his face with her foot. Misaki strongly wished to completely destroy his skull. She knew that by intensifying the pressure from her foot, she could effortlessly break his bones. But Misaki was determined to make sure that Eliazar did not die without enduring intense suffering. As she deemed him unworthy of a quick and painless death.
Misaki leaned in towards Eliazar and brought her face close to his ear.
"Go ahead and curse me all you want, I really don't care," Misaki uttered menacingly to Eliazar, who responded by fixing a stern gaze upon Misaki and disrespectfully spat on the floor.
Misaki simply gazed at him devoid of any emotion.
His pride was strong enough that he refused to surrender to Misaki even after being defeated. Those with dignity do not submit to their foes, just as Misaki does not yield to anyone unless they have earned her respect.
Misaki made a threat after she loosened her hold on his arm, "And you better remember this face, Eliazar. If you see me, you better hide because when I see you, I'm gonna break every bone in your ribs."
From the first moment they met, Misaki has held a deep dislike for Cross. Although she acknowledges his skills, they do not outweigh her strong feelings of animosity towards him. Misaki firmly believes that Cross will impede her mission.
'Doesn't he realize that stupid Ice Cube doesn't like me either? We just get on each other's nerves,' Misaki lamented internally that it was her own fault for allowing Raizen to involve her in this conflict. And she resolved that such a situation should be avoided in the future.
Upon feeling a sensation of being struck from behind, Misaki swiftly reacted by evading the perceived threat. Upon turning around, she was taken aback to witness Cross gripping a man—who's holding a chair—by the neck. It was evident that the man was experiencing difficulty breathing, yet Cross did not display any concern. He resembled a predatory snake coiled around its prey. His cold gaze fixated on the man with an unmistakable venomous intensity.
Only after that moment did Misaki realize that all of his teammates had been knocked out. And the focus of attention had shifted to them.
Raizen and Aidrielle made their way towards Misaki while Wayne and ZM headed directly to Eliazar.
"Misaki," tawag ni Raizen sa kanya at sinipat-sipat ang dalaga. Nang mapansin niya na dumudugo ang leeg ni Misaki ay kumunot ang noo nito.
"Napuruhan ka ba? Si Eliazar ba ang may gawa nito? Okay ka lang? Masakit ba?" sunod-sunod na tanong ni Raizen. Matapos ay hinawakan ang baba ni Misaki para iangat at tignan ang sugat sa leeg nito.
Upon being touched by Raizen, Misaki instantly smacked his hand and gave him a disapproving look. However, Raizen remained unruffled by Misaki's reaction and continued to study her appearance.
Before grabbing a handkerchief to tend to the blood oozing from her wound, Misaki informed Raizen in a straightforward manner, "Damn, it's all because of that stupid ice cube."
'...Ice cube?' Raizen pondered with confusion in his thoughts.
Raizen considered only one person who could have caused that injury to Misaki. He looked towards where Cross was standing. Although he knew this, he decided to pretend he didn't know who was to blame. Misaki just sighed and also glanced at Cross.
"I'm good," Misaki offered comfort to Raizen upon noticing the worry reflected in his eyes.
When she noticed a gun being pointed at Cross nearby, she immediately became alert. The situation escalated further because Cross had his back turned to the assailant. Wayne vocalized his concern with a curse, and Raizen also seemed to have recognized the danger as they quickly moved towards him.
In a display of incredible skill and quick thinking, Raizen deftly moved Cross out of harm's way from the imminent threat of the gunman. Wayne swiftly advanced towards the gunman and decisively kicked his hand, forcing him to release his grip. Following up with a powerful kick to the gunman's stomach, he efficiently disabled him by breaking his arm.
Wayne's triumph against his enemies contrasts with Misaki's defeat in her own match. Misaki was unable to prevent Eliazar from kicking her ankle that caused her to fall down and cry out in agony.
Misaki was so stunned that she was unable to stand up right away. So cradle her right ankle on the floor. The intense force elicited enough pain for Misaki to utter curses.
"Para 'yan sa lalaking dinurog mo ang buto sa dibdib kahapon," panunuya ni Eliazar kay Misaki habang nasisiyahang nakikita itong nasasaktan.
Eliazar was just about to kick Misaki when he was struck on the head by a metal tray. It caused him to drop to the ground instantly and resulting in a bleeding wound on his head.
"Tulungan na kita," isang pamilyar na boses ang narinig ng dalaga kaya naman napaangat siya ng tingin.
His hesitant gaze mixed with concern caught Misaki's attention. She pondered why he felt the need to help her despite not knowing each other well. It was clear he felt responsible for Eliazar's situation.
Little did Misaki know, Aqiula was also in the Dining Hall.
"Let me handle this instead, Laxamana. It's best for you to back off," Raizen interrupted the moment Mizaki was about to reach Aqiula's hand.
He hesitated to step back to make way for Raizen. An implicit message was clearly conveyed through Raizen's gaze. But before Misaki could fully grasp its meaning, he grasped her extended hand.
She noticed a fleeting instance where she felt a formidable presence around him, which was immediately overtaken by his warm demeanor. He then gently took hold of Misaki's waist and helped her to stand up.
In just one week, there has been a complete shift from tranquility to chaos for Misaki. This felt like an unjust punishment that she did not deserve.
Misaki was starting to stand up when she heard a chilling voice that, while not showing strength or weakness, had a commanding presence in the Dining Hall.
"Do you want to see hell, huh?" Cross asked Eliazar with coldness as he maintained his grip around his neck.
Cross positioned himself in a manner that prevented Misaki from seeing his facial expression. But Eliazar's face revealed exactly what Misaki had been eager to see-it looked dreadful.
Eliazar quickly shook his head, finding it difficult to breathe as he hovered two inches above the ground. It emphasized his small stature compared to Cross.
Those who may not be fully informed could be perplexed by the situation at hand. Killing is being glorified during the Catharsis Hunt, suggesting that outside of this event, the act of killing is strictly prohibited on the premises. But we're not talking about something normal. Clandestine is a place where many people derive pleasure from violence rather than other forms of justice.
Moon Division could go all out and challenge anyone within the premises of the institute. But Sun Division mostly hangs back, often just ending up on the sideline or even being their victims.
It seems that Clandestine is endorsing such violence, allowing those with privilege to mistreat those without. The institution would overlook their actions as long as no one was killed, even handling any issues to benefit the students.
"Ibaba mo siya, Raizen. Hindi niya kailangan ng tulong mo," rinig nilang utos ni Cross. Natigilan sila ni Raizen at napatingin sa kaibigan.
'Does he have eyes in the back of his head to see everything around him?' Misaki made a displeased comment in her thoughts.
"Hindi mo siya bibitiwan?" lumalim ang boses ni Cross. Walang nagawa si Raizen kundi tumalima sa utos ng kanyang Emperor.
Cross was quite taken aback by his behavior towards her. While Cross had initially thought that Raizen might have some feelings for Misaki, he couldn't help but feel a sense of repulsion towards her character. Cross suspected that Raizen was merely feigning interest out of obligation. But it appeared to him that Raizen was actually developing a genuine desire to be in her presence.
'What's up with him?' Misaki once again expressed discontent within her thoughts.
"Ano'ng trip no'n?" tila nawala sa mood si Raizen habang ibinababa niya si Misaki. Ngunit pagpaling niya sa kanya'y nagpaskil ito ng ngiti sa mukha. Inilagay na lamang niya ang braso ni Misaki sa kanyang balikat upang alalayan itong umupo sa isang silya na malapit sa kanila.
Her ankle was still bothering her. She was so ready to give Eliazar a piece of her mind when they crossed paths again.
'I'm gonna make sure his blood is all over the ground until he's dead. I hope he dies,' Misaki uttered a curse inwardly.
Cross let go of Eliazar after a short moment, making him fall to the floor, coughing and gasping for air. The people watching seemed frozen in place and everything stopped because of this.
His eyes held a chilling aura as they met hers, which curiously felt untroubled and undaunted by his piercing gaze. Despite the fear that his eyes instilled in others, she alone did not cower in front of them. Whenever those eyes gazed at her, she only sensed a beckoning.
It was like something out of a fairytale when he went up to Misaki and squatted down to look at her ankle. But let's be real, their story wasn't all rainbows and unicorns.
Even though there was anger in his gaze, she perceived it to be tender and controlled when directed at her. His gentle and sophisticated touch along with his tranquil and melodious voice left a strong impression.
"Masakit? Kasalanan mo 'yan. 'Di ka kasi nag-iingat," maanghang na sermon sa kanya ni Cross.
Good thing Misaki didn't get fooled by his sweet act before. She knew it was all in her head. All those fleeting warm feelings she had towards him went up in flames as soon as he started talking.
She thought everything was over. But then Cross suddenly got up and stared at the crowd, making the hall even more tense.
Misaki looked down, not wanting to see anyone because she was really mad about what was going on.
'Isn't it ironic, Nichigo? Living a normal life, huh? I should have realized earlier that we're anything but normal,' Misaki uttered sarcastically within her thoughts.
She hardly forgives people who have left her.
She's not like some saint they can put up on a pedestal just because she's the best or the most famous in their field. Yet the brotherhood sees her as their savior because they think she's flawless.
But Misaki isn't perfect either. She has her own flaws and is carrying more guilt than the others without realizing her true nature and her biggest mistake.
Misaki was suddenly brought back to reality when she heard Cross' serious voice.
"Nakita mo? Ibabalik ko sa 'yo ang lahat ng ginawa mo sa kanya. Magbabayad ka nang malaki," malumanay ngunit hindi mapagkakaila ang pagkamuhi ni Cross kay Eliazar.
He was feeling fed up with being around Misaki but he had to stick it out for the mission. He wasn't about to let Raizen's behavior ruin all the progress they had made.
She glanced at him and their eyes met.
Cross then shifted his focus ahead, leading Misaki to once more notice the somber complexion of everyone except the Dark Knights, who stood around Cross with stern looks on their faces.
Misaki was aware of the importance of showing gratitude. But she also realized that doing so had led her into a situation she was meant to avoid, which she found maddening.
"Listen up, all of you. Pakialaman n'yo uli siya at sa akin kayo magbabayad. Make sure you get it through your thick skulls, I'm her Insignia," Cross accentuated the term 'insignia' and his tone was tinged with mischief, "I have her all to myself."
Misaki couldn't help but feel the authority and power evident in the way Cross spoke and carried himself. His strong stance and dignified bearing reflected the commanding presence that he exuded.
'Sino'ng may sabi niyan? Kailan pa?' takang tanong ni Raizen sa isip niya. Hindi siya makapaniwala na ginawa iyon ng kanyang kaibigan. Sa pagkakataong iyon, wala siyang ideya kung ano ang tumatakbo sa isip ni Cross.
The Insignia is one of the two immunities that a Moon Division may bestow upon a Sun Division student or an individual whom they wish to protect.
Clandestine is inherently unconventional and even include elements of force within their teachings, which is why their administration has put in place an immunity system. Students who have been granted immunity receive specific privileges tied to their protected status.
It seemed that Cross' Insignia has been acquired by someone.
Surprise and disbelief were evident in the reactions of everyone in the Dining Hall as they struggled to come to terms with the shocking revelation. Cross' friends also shared looks of astonishment, their eyes widening in disbelief.
Cross left the hall seeming unfazed by what he had done. Misaki expected him to stop in front of her but instead, he walked by without looking at her.
"See you later, sis-in-law," Aidrielle bid her farewell with a smile before joining Cross and placing his arm around him. He proceeded to utter something to Cross in a hushed tone, which went unheard by Misaki.
"Nasa 'yo lang ang insignia ni Cross. Pero ibibigay ko naman sa 'yo ang apelyido ko dahil magiging asawa kita sa huli. So get ready for it!" Raizen whispered to Misaki with a smile, subtly raising and lowering his eyebrows before walking away. Wayne and ZM then followed him, with ZM simply nodding at her.
'He is my insignia? Hell no! I don't need any protection, especially not from him!' Misaki was overwhelmed by a myriad of confusing thoughts and unanswered questions, causing a throbbing headache.
In the midst of broken and shattered utensils and furniture, she found herself seated on a chair. It was during this moment that Misaki felt the beginnings of dizziness and the physical pain from her wounds. It pushed her to let out a deep breath.
Even though she felt pain each time her ankle was touched, she bravely continued to endure it while also having a throbbing headache. Misaki chose to endure her silent agony by simply closing her eyes.
"Hey, why should I listen to you? What makes you think this is any of your business? Don't act like you don't remember what you did to me. Trying to play innocent now?" Misaki's questions remained devoid of any emotion.
Her help during the last Catharsis Hunt didn't really matter. Misaki only stepped in because she was bored. She's not interested in pretending to be friends with Aqiula and Leightann. In fact, Misaki had totally forgotten about them until now.
"Hindi kami inosente. At pagbabayaran namin ang kasalanan namin sa 'yo, pangako 'yan," sagot ni Aqiula nang hindi makatingin kay Misaki.
Misaki watched Aqiula and Leightann for a few moments in the bustling Dining Hall, unfazed by the chaos around them with janitors keeping everything in order. But some people were clearly giving Misaki judgmental looks. Who wouldn't be a bit jealous of the person who owns the Cross' insignia, right?
"Okay," her answers were short because Misaki looked dizzy again.
"Kaya mo bang tumayo?" tanong ni Aqiula. Umiling si Misaki.
Upon trying to get up, Misaki was suddenly enveloped in darkness and felt a sudden weakness overcome her. Uncertain of her fate, the last thing she heard was a voice before slipping into unconsciousness.
"...Aneki!"
She was totally lost in that dark and cold place. It was like she was just floating around, not feeling anything at all and not even sure if she was still breathing.
Once Misaki turned nineteen, she found out about Miaka. She tried really hard to remember her past. But some outside forces messed things up, making it way harder for her to make any progress.
Even though the people giving her medicine keep telling her that she's not complete, Misaki hasn't felt the need to try to find Miaka's lost memories in the three years she's been with Taki.
Despite being told lies and stories repeatedly, Misaki began to believe that whatever had happened to Miaka was not worth discussing further because she thought Miaka deserved it. Although she pretended to believe the lies, it was not difficult for her to do so as she cherished her friends. Misaki prioritized her loyalty to them over Miaka, whom she did not even know about.
Everything transpired on that fateful night. Not only was their sin judged but a crack in the secrets of Miaka was revealed when theirs came to light. Both sinners had committed the same transgression, an act that the brotherhood vehemently disapproved of, especially considering it was carried out by agents who were perceived as the purest within their organization.
There came a point when Misaki felt compelled to address the lies and tales she had been influenced by. It became deeply significant for her to remember Miaka and to uncover the mysteries that she carried with her to the grave.
Her death was so senseless. She must have felt so betrayed and alone. Miaka must be really angry at everyone who played a part in that.
Misaki could tell how upset and mad she was. She really felt it as Miaka's emotions were echoing in her dream.
Misaki sometimes remembers people she's never met before and experiences emotions she doesn't recognize.
Miaka never felt like she completely belonged in the shadow of the moon. She displayed compassion and understanding by even finding love with someone who was considered her enemy. She never had the heart to harm anyone who betrayed her. So Misaki was left confused about why she and her secrets remained shrouded by the brotherhood.
It didn't matter to Misaki who Miaka was though, as she would become familiar with her as their memories intertwined. Yet there is one name that Misaki should keep in mind.
Suzaku...
Those who are always under the shadow of the moon can never be saints. And Miaka was nice to everyone except him. Misaki could be mistaken but she believed Miaka could truly be herself when she was with Suzaku.
She could never bring herself to mention his name to her friends, especially to Taki. They were extremely touchy about anything connected to the First Creation. So Misaki was convinced that Taki would get suspicious about her stealth mission here if she ever brought up that name to him.
'I just wanna wake up and have Taki beside me,' Misaki pleaded silently in her thoughts.
She found herself enveloped in darkness, succumbing to its mesmerizing hold. Just then, a voice reached her ears.
"Sleep well, Misaki Ayuzawa. I'll be here..."
Who—Taki?
While Misaki was lost in the memories that came to life in her dreams, a young man tried to help ease her sadness.
He saw the whole thing go down in the Dining Hall.
During the past week, he had been watching Misaki from afar. But he soon realized that she had started getting comfortable with the guy he disliked.
Destiny seemed to play with the feelings of those who wanted to get closer to her. It was waggery that the person she should have avoided ended up being the one who got close to her instead.
It has been ten years since he last laid eyes on her. If not for the lost Seigan, he would have eagerly reunited with her the moment they crossed paths in Clandestine. Yet bound by the weight of a promise sealed in blood, he is unable to confess the truth or seek forgiveness for his past wrongs against her.
He made his way to the rear of the orchard near the Mannian House where only a few people were going. Taking a deep breath of the brisk wind, he leaned against the bush and closed his eyes, appreciating the cool air against his skin.
He vividly remembered Raizen and Misaki's entrance into the Dining Hall and their frustrating meal together. The situation escalated when Cross declared himself as her insignia, causing further issues. But the worst part was seeing Eliazar kick Misaki—it made him so mad that he had to clench his fists. He really wanted to do something about Eliazar but he knew he didn't have the power to do that.
'Harmoni...' he echoed her name within his thoughts.
It is unfair that with the scion around, no one even remembers Harmoni. The noble brotherhood kept praising Misaki but forgot all about Miaka. It's just not right for him or for anyone who ever cared about her.
He wasn't even worried about Misaki. Who is he to even care about the scion anyway? His main concern is that she might end up falling for the same trap that got Harmoni in trouble.
"Hindi siya si Harmoni," dagdag ng binatang may kulay gray na buhok.
Upon opening his eyes, he gazed upwards and let out a sigh.
His chestnut eyes gleamed in the sunlight. He empathized with the sorrow his friends were experiencing as he shared in the same emotions too.
"Harmoni didn't ditch us, she had to leave because she was betrayed. Even if everyone else gives up on her, we won't. Ngayong nandito si Misaki, we need make sure na walang magbabago," he reminded them what they needed to focus on right now.
Leightann almost revealed what happened to Misaki during the Catharsis Hunt. But thankfully Aqiula intervened, allowing him to come up with a different explanation.
In no way did they intend to create a negative perception to her. They were not perverts to begin with. But Leightann had to consider different approaches when they unexpectedly spotted Misaki on their campus.
He understood that Aqiula would struggle to restrain himself if no action was taken. Despite the unpleasant nature of the situation, it seemed to be the sole method for them to interact with her without causing Aqiula to lose his composure and without raising suspicion from Misaki.
Once he gave Leightann a decent amount to punch, he let it slide. But if it was the guy they were talking to at that moment, things would be different. He always took matters seriously when it came to her. If he ever found out that Leightann had carelessly touched her precious skin, a punch wouldn't cut it. Even if it was a dozen of times.
"Pero bakit siya na'ndito? Her Master doesn't let her wander away from his tight grip. And besides her, I didn't spot anyone else around. It's just so odd na siya lang mag-isa ang na'ndito," dagdag pa ni Leightann.
They patiently waited for him to speak. But as he remained silent, Aqiula's composed expression shifted to one of frustration.
He stepped closer as he confronted his friend, "Did you know about this and kept it from me?"
Feeling a sense of sadness, he gently moved Aqiula aside. No one, not even him, had a clue about Misaki going to the Philippines. If he had known, he would have definitely do anything to prevent her from coming here.
"Kumalma ka nga, Aqiula. Kung 'di mo kayang kontrolin 'yang sarili mo, lumayo ka kay Misaki," sandali siyang tumigil para titigan sa mata si Aqiula, "Your sister is not here. She's not Misaki."
Ayuzawa Misaki will never be Harmoni, no matter why she's here. Her reasons won't uncover the truth. They won't allow her to disrupt Harmoni, keeping her secrets safe in their hearts. Everything must remain unchanged.
Perhaps the only thing he needed to do was wait, as he has been patiently waiting until this moment.
Should waiting from afar not enough to shield Misaki, he would willingly offer his humble life for her protection. The lost Seigan no longer binds him. It will not hinder him from ensuring her safety which he failed to secure on Harmoni before.
He's never done anything before, so he's about to start now.
