Chapter 55
Maggie takes a walk down to the back fields. She comes to the small cross and headstone they had placed at Alan's grave. He didn't want anything elaborate or anyone to make a fuss about him when his time was near. Chance and Heather had agreed with her to place his grave on the property, the place where he grew up, lived and worked until his last breath. They both knew that it would give her some comfort knowing he was always close by.
She had picked some wild flowers along the way and switched them with the others that were wilted in the vase at the base of the stone. She knelt nearby, brushing away the dirt and stones, picking away the pieces of overgrown grass. Humming softly as tears welled up in her eyes.
"Alan, I wish you were here right now, and that everything were different. That you had told Chance how you really felt before you passed. I've made a mess of everything by telling him the truth. And then not telling him about Marcus, flaunting my relationship in front of him just a few hours later. I'm afraid I've pushed him away" she cries.
"You've done nothing wrong Maggie " a voice behind her softly responds. She turns to see Marcus standing behind her. He had stopped by to check on her, knowing she was still upset from Chances' reaction when they walked in together the other night.
She turns back towards the grave, wiping the tears from her cheeks, "how long have you been standing there". "Long enough to hear you blame yourself for everything" he says.
He moves to her side, takes her by the hands to help her up and holds her close. "Maggie, you haven't messed up anything. You haven't pushed him away. He needs time to process it all. I should have told him about us. How we were always friends since grade school and how Alan had asked me to take care of you after he passed. We didn't plan on our relationship changing, it just happened. Don't underestimate his understanding, Maggie" he says softly.
Maggie buried her face into his chest as she listened to the words he spoke. After a few minutes of standing in his embrace, she leaned back and looked into his eyes "I'm not sorry about us" she says as he lifts her chin slightly, kissing her lightly on the lips. "Neither am I" he tells her before kissing her again.
