Chapter 37
Despite having stayed up late, Chance woke early to head out on the lake. He needed to think over exactly how he was going to explain to his mother and sister how his condition had changed and what the next steps would be. Wishing Tim were with him to help sort things out, he set out for awhile on the boat to think.
The lake was calm and the sun rise was beautiful. Memories came rushing back to times he spent with Mina relaxing on the boat or partying with friends. He missed her so much. They had agreed to part, to go their separate ways. She was pursuing her career in medicine while he pursued his music. They had promised each other to stay in touch but as each of their lives became busier the calls, the letters, the texts gradually disappeared. He wanted to share so much more with her, but after finding out about the tumor he knew it was best to just let her go. He wasn't going to burden her or anyone with what he was going through. It just wasn't fair in his eyes.
Brought out of his thoughts by the ringing of his phone he reaches in his pocket and sees the caller I'D. It's Tim.
"Hey Tim, what's up" he answered.
"Hey bud, just thought I'd check to see how you are and how everything went when you told your family," Tim replied.
"Ugh, yeah, about that.." Chance responded.
"You haven't told them yet have you" Tim said.
Chance was silent, he didn't want to ask Tim for help, that would show he was weak.
"Chance?", Tim asked.
"I just haven't found the right time or the right words to tell them. I don't want them to worry more than they already do, ya know" Chance told him.
Tim knew Chance would have a hard time revealing what he's been going through the past several months. Before they all left for their break he wanted to offer to come with him but knew it was something Chance needed to handle his own way, on his own terms.
"So I've been thinking," says Tim. "We still have another week before we have to head back for the tour and I thought, if you didn't mind, I'd head down to Alabama and stop by. I haven't been to that part of the gulf in awhile and I could use a relaxing change of atmosphere. If that's alright with you."
Alright with me? I could really use someone too talk to right now about so many things, Chance thinks to himself. "What about your time with
your Mom? Won't she be upset she didn't get much time with you?" Chance asks.
"She has a heavy schedule planned with the church group working on various activities and trips. I forgot just how active she really is," Tim chuckled. "She plans on attending a few of our concerts with my sister Emily throughout the tour, so we'll spend more time together then."
After a few more minutes on the phone, Chance and Tim plan on meeting up in Mobile the next afternoon. Tim will text him the exact time his flight should arrive later.
As he hangs up he feels a sense of relief, thankful that he has let Tim into his life, thankful that Tim is becoming more than a friend and bandmate, that he has become a brother.
