Chapter 22
Tim contacted Luke, explained without going into full detail, that Chance needed to head home for a few days. At first, as they thought, his response was full of questions and concerns about the public finding out why he would be home when they were supposed to be on tour.
Tim looked him directly in the eyes and said " Luke, if he doesn't get a few days off there may not even be a tour."
Luke stared at Tim about to say something when he spoke up " besides, we could all use some time before the full tour starts. With the back to back concerts, videos and traveling on the bus we could stand to be away from each other for a bit."
Luke agreed " yeah, we don't need you guys killing each other" he said with a slight smirk. He then told Tim that they would all have a week off and that he would make arrangements for Chance to fly home on a private jet. Tim was surprised by his offer, though he knew deep down he cared for all the guys and was genuinely concerned for their welfare.
As he walked back to the bus all he could think about was what had happened the night before. Watching his friend suffer with such intense pain, he couldn't even begin to understand how someone, a father, could make their son feel weak and unworthy for any reason let alone something like this that he has no control over. It angered him so much, how he wished the man were still alive to prove how wrong he was about Chance, but also how grateful he had been for his own dad. How his dad included him in so many things, taught him so much that only a father could and knew that had Chance been his friend when they were younger, that his dad would have treated him like he did Tim...like a son.
Once back at the bus he finds everyone up and ready except Chance. Tim asks where he is and Austin looks at him, nodding towards his bunk.
Rob chuckles " sleeping beauty has yet to drag his lazy butt out of bed".
Austin says "not now Robbie", catching Rob slightly off guard with his response. He quickly says "why don't you, Adam and I head out for breakfast and these two can meet us there if they want". " Yeah I could really use some coffee, " Adam replies. Rob shrugs ok as Austin tells Tim where they will be.
Once they shut the door to the bus, he walks back to Chances' bunk. The curtain is still drawn and he doesn't want to disturb him with a sudden burst of light. He softly calls his name, hearing a slight moan from the other side.
"Chance, are you awake? " Another slight moan and then a raspy response "yeah".
Tim asks if he feels like getting up or does he need more time to rest.
"I better get up, we have too much to do today."
"You sure, asks Tim, "we've got time today, we don't need to rush".
"If I stay any longer in bed it will get worse. Umm, can you grab my sunglasses, I'm going to need them before I open this curtain". Tim gets them off the table and slides them to him from the bottom of the curtain. Once he has them on, he slowly opens the curtain and sits up.
"How you feeling," asks Tim.
"Like someone has been beating me upside the head with a baseball bat" Chance replies. "
Wow, that good," Tim jokes.
"I'd rather it was because I drank a bottle of whiskey, it would at least have been fun getting to this point" Chance tells him as he gets out of his bed. He starts to take a step but stumbles back a bit. Tim grabs his arm to steady him. "This happens sometimes too but I'm ok" he tells him.
Chance makes his way to the closet, grabs his clothes and heads for the shower. Tim tells him he's going to make some coffee and to yell if he needs anything.
Soon Chance walks into the living area of the bus, still wearing his glasses he grabs a cup of coffee. Both men sit silently at the table sipping their coffee.
"About last night," Chance begins "I just wanted you to know I appreciate what you did for me. I'm a bit embarrassed by having anyone see or hear how I am during these damn episodes", as he stares down into his coffee.
"I wasn't quite sure how I could help or if you even wanted me too, but I couldn't let you suffer alone" Tim responds quietly.
Chance brings his head up and asks, "where did you come from Tim? You have to be the most compassionate man I've ever come across, you give more of yourself to others than I have ever seen. I haven't felt that compassion from anyone other than my mother since I was a child".
"Two things," he begins "One..No I am NOT gay (Chance smirks at that) and two I guess it comes from my parents. The love they had for each other, their families and their neighbors, always being there for them, no questions asked. I'm a firm believer you treat others the way you want to be treated. You, all the guys, are the brothers I never had."
Chance is thankful he is wearing his sunglasses so Tim can't see the tears forming in his eyes.
As he clears his throat to speak Tim tells Chance he has spoken to Luke and how he reacted as they expected. "Great, says Chance sadly.
" But," Tim continues " he has made arrangements for all of us to be off for a week while you head home. I told him we all could use some time away from each other before the full tour begins."
"Wow, that's great you guys will have a chance to rest up. Adam and Rob can head home to their girls, Austin could head to Georgia and maybe relax with a little fishing. What are you going to do Tim?"
" Head to Texas to see my mom for a few days. I miss her home cooking " he smiles as he pats his stomach.
Knowing this comes as a relief to Chance, he didn't want to cause any problems for the rest of the guys by messing up the tour. He grabs his phone " I need to book an early flight for tomorrow morning so I can contact my Dr. for when he can expect me."
"All taken care of", Tim tells him. "Luke has arranged for you to go by private jet. All you need to do is tell him the time you need to be there and you're all set".
"Seriously, he would do that for me?"
"Yup, surprised me too," Tim laughs.
"Now the hard part, how do I tell the others" he says as he finishes his coffee.
