Chapter 18
Heather walks up and knocks on the door. A petite woman in her 50's dressed in capris, tank top and large floppy hat answers the door.
"Heather, what in the world are you doing knocking on the door. This is still your home silly" she says.
"Hi Momma, nice hat " she laughs as she walks inside, closing the door behind her.
"I was just out weeding the garden, almost time to start canning for the winter. And the berries are ripe on the vine in the back fields, I'm hoping to get that started tomorrow."
"Momma, you work too hard. You need help around here, you know that both Chance and I can afford to get someone to help you. You've worked your whole life, how about taking some time for you and enjoy it".
"When you and your brother finally get married and bring me some grandbabies, then I'll stop working and take time to enjoy them", she says as she pats Heather lightly on the cheek. "Besides, since your daddy passed I need it, it keeps me busy, I don't think as much" she says quietly.
Heather hugs her mother and says "I know it hasn't been an easy year for you Momma. That's why I'm worried about you being here alone and working too hard."
"Oh I'm fine sweetie, nothing to worry about, " she smiles. "here, sit down, let me fix you something for dinner."
"Not tonight Momma, go change, I'm taking you out for dinner".
Her mother smiles and knows that refusing to go wouldn't be accepted, "Ok, give me a few minutes to shower and change."
While her mother is getting ready, Heather sits down on the sofa reviewing the information she was able to find at the medical library, deciding just how to approach her mother on what she's found, both in Chances' chart and in her research.
As they arrive at Ruths Chris Steakhouse, a fine dining restaurant in Mobile, her mother remarks she should have told her they were coming here, she would have dressed better.
"Momma, you look fine", never has she ever seen her mother dress less than her best, regardless of where she goes.
"You know you shouldn't spend your hard earned money on me like this Heather, you should be saving it for medical school."
Heather smiles, "Momma, I have plenty of money to take you to diner and for school, don't worry so much. Besides Momma, you more than deserve a night out." Her mother just smiles as they are escorted to their table.
Heather decides not to ask her mother any questions tonight. She deserves this night out, with no stress or reminders.
