Chapter 143
Chance could hear the conversation faintly in the distance. Leaning forward on his knees, covering his head, he began to cry. "Why are you crying" Caroline asked him.
"Can you not hear that" he asked.
"Yes, now do you understand what we've been telling you" she replied.
"But if I stay here, so many more could live. She's right, I dont want to be kept alive by a machine. That's no quality of life. It's not fair for them to suffer, for my family to hope for a miracle. Do you understand why I should stay here" he yelled.
"Adam, listen to me. There's no quarantee that using your body to help others will even work. Your job is different, it will help others, but only if you go back" his father told him.
Chance had an overwhelming feeling of physical and emotional pain. "I can't be selfish, I just can't " he screamed.
"You're being selfish by giving up and taking the easy way out by thinking of staying here. I didn't raise you to be a quitter. Damn it Adam, Man Up" his father bellowed.
Chance covered his ears, the screaming, yelling, the distant cries. His head was spinning out of control. "I can't " he screamed as he ran off.
"There's only one person he will listen to" Caroline stated as they watched him running to the shore.

Chance's family were at the hospital, as they had been every day, taking turns spending time with him, hoping for a sign.
Mina watched from the window, her heart breaking for Maggie. "A mother should never have to bury their child" she thought as she finally realized that Steven was right.
Heather and Jake sat with Marcus in the waiting room until Maggie returned. They had just decided to go for a meal in the cafeteria when Jasmina and Steven walked in.
"Dr. Lynch would like to speak with you" Mina said, stepping aside.
"Please, have a seat" he stated and pulled a chair up in front of them.
He explained everything he had discussed with Mina and that there was no changes in his status.
Marcus pulled Maggie closer as she sobbed while he spoke of organ donation. "He would be helping so many other individuals, giving them a second chance at life" Steven explained.
Heather grew more and more angry with every word he uttered. "Why are you telliing us this. Did Tim make this decision and was too much of a coward to talk this over with us first. He just say go ahead do what you want with him?" she demanded.
"No, Tim hasn't said anything. As a matter of fact, we havent heard from or seen him all week. We need to have him sign the documents before we proceed to legal action" Steven told them.
"Legal action? For what?" Maggie asked, looking at Marcus.
"If a person can't make a conscious decision, and no one is designated to make it for them, then implied consent comes into play. It's based on what someone would want done in a situation such as this when they can't speak for themselves" Marcus explained.
"Over my dead body will you take legal action" yelled Heather. "Why isn't he here taking care of Chance, following his wishes. He's abandoned him Momma, see why I said it wasn't right him taking over everything instead of us, his real family. Where the hell is he" she demanded.
"Right here " Tim stated in his deepest voice as he walked into the waiting room.
