song: Kaleidoscope - mxmtoon

Yakko hums softly as he drives him and Wakko to their school, a gust of the cool September air passes through the open car windows. Sounds of the leaves swaying interspersed with the music from his phone makes the experience much more upbeat. The siblings are dressed in their sentimental clothes. Yakko, wearing his mother's old lavender jersey jacket, and Wakko, in his favorite blue hoodie and childhood hat from their dad.

Everything around them feels like nostalgia, they're practically drowning in it, take the red convertible car they are riding. It was supposed to be a gift from his dad when he was teaching him how to drive. Yakko finally took this car for a spin after getting his license the day before and with the death of their parents, William never got to see Yakko get his licence.

Wakko peered out of the window, his eyes roaming the expanse of fields and woods as they sped by. The first day of high school was an exciting yet nostalgic milestone he had anxiously anticipated for months. A colorful medley of pins on his hat caught his eye in the reflection of the rear view mirror: a rainbow pin, a non-binary flag pin, and a heart-shaped one with the words 'he/they' that Yakko had made for them for their birthday. His stomach felt hollow since this was the first time he'd spent a special occasion without his parents, but the presence of Yakko, Pinky and Brain helped to fill that void.

The song "Victims of Nostalgia" by mxmtoon plays softly in the background as he zones back from the memories of yesterday and recognises the lines his brother is singing. "I wished that time passed like seasons in LA. When grass in the front yard was waiting for greener days"

Wakko had a small grin on him as he chimed in, "It's the panic of growing up. It's the fear of fallin' down." Yakko smiles as he sees Wakko jamming with him from the rear view mirror, as the song went on both of them are singing it out. "And if life ain't what you want. It don't come back around!"

The younger Warner sibling leans forward, as does Yakko, as they balled their fists like they're holding a microphone in a karaoke machine. "I don't wanna, feel so bored of, what I have right now..." Yakko swayed to the music, humming it under his breath. The siblings exchanged a relieved glance; for a few blessed moments, all of their worries and anxieties melted away. They knew that life was about to get much more complicated, now that one of them was entering high school, but for this brief moment, everything felt alright. After everything that happened to them in such a short amount of time, small moments like this are a calming pause before they start the story.

Wakko looked back at the road when the song ended and changed to another song. Wakko's gaze lingered over the view of the campus, a medley of students walking, some carrying their iced coffees and confections, strolled on the sidewalk while cars were caught in the traffic. He fiddled the fluff from his jacket, feeling a twinge of nostalgia for their past. "You know, Yakko," he murmured softly, "these songs, this car ride, it's like a piece of our old life traveling with us into this new chapter."

Yakko smiled thinly at Wakko, pretending not to notice the shift of ambiance. "Sure thing, sib sib. Remember our traditional first day of school pancakes that mom used to make? They were really something else." Yakko's voice was wistful as he remembered the long-ago days when his parents would fill their bellies before heading off for a new year of learning.

He forced a laugh, trying to break the heavy mood that hung in the air. "I made pancakes this morning - though I'm sure they weren't quite as good as mom's! A bit too crunchy, maybe?" Wakko managed a little smile, but then silence descended between them again. The question hung unspoken in the air: what happened to their parents? Why did they have to leave? Wakko finally broke the stalemate, his tone somber and reflective. "Yakko... will there ever be a chance that we would know who did it?"

As Yakko's grip on the steering wheel tightened, Wakko felt a sense of dread wash over him, not even the soft tunes from Yakko's phone could subdue this gigantic wave of inner panic coasting among them. They both knew that this quest for answers could be a long, arduous one. But it was a promise they made to each other, no matter how hard the journey may become, they had to find the truth. The song fades, replaced by the sounds of a bustling school campus.

Yakko steers the car into the parking lot, the siblings silently look at the imposing high school building before them, a strange mix of excitement and fear filling their hearts. Both bracing themselves for what lies ahead, the siblings take a deep breath and step out of the car. Wakko finally nodded in agreement and Yakko patted his head. "Let's face a new journey together, Wakko." With a determined nod from his younger sibling, Yakko takes one last steadying breath before they make their way towards the entrance of the daunting institution.

Yakko and Wakko walk side by side, navigating the bustling halls of the high school. Students fill the hallway, the sound of lockers slamming shut and chatter fills the air. As the first bell rings, the Warner siblings exchange a nod and a smile, wishing each other good luck as they approach their respective classrooms.

Yakko enters the classroom and scans the room for an empty seat. He spots an empty desk in the middle of the class and makes his way towards it. He notices a girl with orange hair that's styled up in a high ponytail, sitting beside him. Her pen dances upon the desk like a conductor's wand, creating a symphony of sound. The Warner boy can't help get drawn to the beat. "That's an interesting tune. What's it from?"

Gigi puts down the pen, pausing her tune. She looks up, her emerald eyes sparkling with a hint of surprise and intrigue by Yakko's sudden comment. Her plump lips curl into a mischievous smile as she speaks with a certain finesse. "Oh, just something I came up with. I like to make my own melodies. A tune a day keeps the boredom away in class, you know?" She offers a knowing wink, knowing the pun she just made isn't the pinnacle of humor. To her delight, Yakko chuckles, his mouth twitches in amusement, laughter ringing like a clear note in the midst of their conversation. "You're quite the creative one, huh? I'm Yakko, by the way."

The orange haired girl extends her hand towards him in friendship. "Nice to meet you, Yakko," she says gracefully. "I'm Gigi, you got some rhythm to match this beat?" Her curious gaze casts over him, hoping he will share the same passion as her.

Yakko's eyes lit up at the challenge, and he pulled out a pen from his pocket. Gigi beat out a rhythm on her desk with two hands as Yakko sat down and joined in, tapping his pen against the hardwood along with hers. The steady beat caught the attention of everyone in the room, their murmurs dying away until all that could be heard was the sound of their pens clacking together in perfect harmony. As they built to the crescendo of their performance, the teacher entered the classroom and the two broke into laughter - all eyes following them as they put away their instruments and students hurried back to their seats. "You've got some cool taste, Yakko. Maybe you're not just another brick in the wall."

Yakko chuckled, playfully waved his hand. "Well, I've been known to have a rackish charm in me." he teased. Their conversation continues, their chatter that's quiet yet loud enough to entertain them to throughout the rest of their time in class. Yakko and Gigi sometimes trading jokes and stories while the teacher lectured. Though there were occasional scoldings from the teacher, neither of the two students seemed to take much notice. In a way it was refreshing - Yakko felt like his day had been given new life with Gigi's presence.

Lunchtime at the school was a cacophony of laughter, chatter, and the clatter of trays. But amidst the bustling cafeteria, Wakko's eyes were drawn to a girl sitting alone on the bleachers of the school gym. She had her lunch tray beside her but seemed more engrossed in a book than in her meal. Her nose was buried deep within its pages, and she held it with a reverence usually reserved for treasured artifacts.

Wakko stood there, feeling his heart thump in his chest. But the girl's shy and studious energy pulled him forward. With a warm smile, he stepped closer and asked "Hey there, can I sit with you?" She looked from her book in surprise; she hadn't expected anyone to talk to her, least of all someone as friendly as Wakko. After a pause, she gave him an awkward nod. "Yeah, sure."

Wakko took the seat beside her, curious about what she was reading. It was Alice Oseman's Loveless - a book he'd heard of but never read. He leaned over to take a peek. "Is that Loveless? I've heard that one's a rollercoaster of emotions. Can I borrow it for a bit?"

"Oh yeah! I've read it before, and it's one of my favorites. Have at it while I finish my lunch," the brown-haired girl said as she handed Wakko her book and proceeded to eat.

Wakko accepted the book with gratitude and started reading. As he delved into the story, the world around him faded away, replaced by the characters and their emotions. The girl quietly enjoyed her meal while occasionally glancing at Wakko, intrigued by his reaction to the book.

When Wakko eventually closed the book and handed it back to her, she couldn't help but ask. "So, what did you think of it?" The Warner sibling gave her a bright smile, "Wow, that was... amazing. I can totally see why you're into it. I mean, the whole 'feeling loveless' thing? It's like the author reached into my soul."

The girl's face lit up in agreement, and a genuine smile spread across her lips. "Exactly! It's like she put those feelings that are so hard to describe into words. Anyways," she said quickly, extending her hand for a handshake. "My name is Pixie." Wakko shook her hand with delight, introducing himself with enthusiasm.

As they talked about the book and swapped stories of similar encounters in life, their voices filled with enthusiasm and humor. They quickly discovered how much they had in common and before they knew it, school bells rang signaling the end of lunch. Pixie covered her mouth with a hand to let out a loud belch - instantly blushing with embarrassment. But then something unexpected happened - Wakko let out a hearty belch, followed by a boisterous laugh. "Oops, I guess that lunch went down the wrong pipe," he joked and Pixie couldn't help but laugh too, feeling comfortable in his presence once more. As they headed to their next class together, their laughter echoed through the hallway, marking the beginning of a friendship which would brighten both of their high school experiences.

In the bustling halls of the school, Cora is seen to be the queen bee. Her every step seemed to demand attention, her laughter like a siren's call to those who wished to be in her good graces. She was undoubtedly popular, and beside her, Katie Ka-Boom was her ever-loyal confidante. Students gathered around the two inside the classroom, the teacher no where in sight.

As they whispered and gawked, metaphorical crowns seemed to hover above their heads. They were the undisputed queens of their high school kingdom, and they made sure everyone knew it. Cora reveled in recounting her summer exploits, each sentence laced with tales of extravagant vacations, glamorous parties, and shopping sprees that seemed to have no end.

"Oh, you won't believe the summer I had! We jetted off to Europe, and I partied on a yacht. It was such a bore, really." Cora told her followers, a smug grin plastered all over her face. Katie chimed in with her own dramatic flair. "Tell them about the shopping spree in Paris, Cora. The designer boutiques practically rolled out the red carpet for us."

Cora's entourage of followers hung on her every word, dazzled by her charisma and tales of opulence. Yet, not everyone in the school was captivated by Cora's charm. In the corner of her eye, she can see some students circling around someone that she didn't think would get any attention.

In the middle of it, Yakko and Gigi are having an impromptu jamming session. The duo sing songs that their classmates suggest and with no fail, have done a great job singing it. "Hey, isn't that the new kid, Yakko was it? And that music nerd Gigi?" Katie pointed out. Yakko and Gigi's harmonies mixing and bending notes so well that they got Cora's attention, creating a rival spectacle to her glamorous stories.

Sensing the shift in dynamics, Cora grew hostile. She wasn't used to anyone challenging her popularity or the attention she commanded. Her eyes narrowed as she watched the two serenade the class, a faint frown playing on her lips.

Cora's face lit up with an expression of sardonic delight as she addressed Yakko. "Oh, Yakko, how quite charming you are. Playing your little music for everyone to hear? Is that your way of trying to get attention?" Yakko's eyes twinkled in response. Not one to be ruffled by Cora's snide comments, he simply replied with a wink and a lighthearted jest. "Well Cora, I think bragging about expensive trips gets tiring after a while. Maybe you should try some good old-fashioned music therapy."

The crowd erupted into laughter, and some of the students began to side with Yakko, recognizing his willingness to stand up to the most popular girl in school. Cora refused to take the defeat lying down. "Oh Yakko, don't act like you're something special. Everyone likes music - there's nothing groundbreaking about it!"

Yakko remains composed, refusing to let Cora's negativity affect him. He grinned widely, "Well, you know what they say, Cora. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Plus, who doesn't like a good jam session?"

Yakko's confidence started to erode away at Cora's previously unshakeable grip on the school's social hierarchy, and people gradually began to recognize how genuine he is over Cora's shallow popularity. The teacher finally entered the classroom, bringing an end to Cora and Yakko's stand-off. The class returned to their respective seats, with whispers of admiration for Yakko's bravery echoing through the room.

Cora, however, was not pleased. She huffed in defeat as her followers whispered amongst themselves, starting to recognize Yakko's talent and authenticity over her shallow popularity. Gigi had been watching everything unfold in silent awe. As Yakko took his seat next to hers, she smiled admiringly at him and whispered "Dang Yakko, you just told off the most popular girl in school."

Yakko could only laugh nervously and shake his head in disbelief of what he had done. He never expected things to turn out like this. All he wanted was for everyone else to have a good time with the music that they made - not get caught up in some battle of social hierarchy between him and Cora. But now that it had happened, there was no going back and he knows that his new friend has his back.

As the school day came to an end, Yakko and Wakko got together at Yakko's car in the parking lot. Wakko went up to his brother with a smile. "What made you so giddy today little sib?" Yakko said as they got inside the car. "I just made a new friend today, she is really nice. She even let me borrow her book." Wakko puts his bag at the back car seat and sat at the passenger seat, putting on his seatbelt.

The older Warner sibling gave him a small grin. "That's really nice to hear. We are just gonna visit some special someone before going home." He quietly said and at that moment Wakko understand.

As they drove off, the atmosphere within the car felt different. The usual banter between the Warner brothers had muted, replaced by a contemplative silence. The scenery outside the car window blurred, much like the emotions that swirled within them.

The red convertible smoothly made its way to the cemetery, a place of quiet reflection and memories etched in stone. The brothers got out, walking passed gravestones scattered around until they got near the gravestones they're familiar with, the air heavy with the scent of sorrow and remembrance. Footsteps muffled by the soft grass, and stood before the markers that bore the names of their dearly departed parents.

Wakko's gaze, once filled with the excitement of a new friendship, now carried the weight of sorrow. "We made new friends today, Mom, Daddo," he began, his voice barely above a whisper. "She's nice, really nice. But it's not the same, you know? Nothing is. Everything is new now."

Yakko, his eyes reflecting the pain they both felt, placed a comforting hand on Wakko's shoulder. "Yeah, it's not the same. But we're trying. We're trying to live, to make friends, to find joy. For you, for me, and for them." His gaze shifted to the sky, as if seeking solace in the heavens.

As they spoke, the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the gravestones. Wakko shared the details of their day, the highs and lows, the laughter and the moments of quiet reflection. Yakko spoke too, not much detail like Wakko but expressing the ache in his heart and the resilience in his spirit.

"We miss you both," Wakko whispered, his words a fragile tribute to the love that still lingered. "Every day, we miss you."

In the fading light, the Warner siblings stood, it felt weird having to continue life after all of this. They have to move forward, not staying for any longer they started to walk back to the car. Once inside, Yakko hugs Wakko tightly, the moment linger and Wakko can't help but shed some tears. "It's okay, just let it out." The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow on the car as they drive away.
