Chapter Twenty-Nine

^Gif is of Luke Hemmings :)

The pack Crestview used to have was called the Blue Heart pack. There were several students from Crestview High in it - Kota James, Tommy James, America James and William and Molly Gallagher, Aimee, Alyssa and Josh Asher as well as Dianne Collins and Jace Collins, Sharon Abernathy, Kye Stone, Katie Massey and Lea Hart. They all died... except for Tommy and Jace.

I know because they're standing in front of me.

Jace held out a piece of paper to me, "Do you know where E4 is?"

A few weeks ago, the entire layout of the school changed to compensate for the population growth of Crestview. The English rooms and Math rooms are now in the same building across the school from where they used to be.

I nodded and pointed to the largest building, "In there, at the far end of the hallway."

Jace grinned, "Thanks."

Tommy nudged him and gestured for them to start moving.

They took a few steps before I stopped them, "Wait."

The boys looked expectantly back at me.

I gave them a small smile, "Welcome back."

Jace grinned again but Tommy cut me a steely gaze before walking off stiffly.

I frowned. What's wrong with Tommy?

"Duh, Em," Justin scoffed when I asked him at lunch, "He ran away from home and came back after their deaths. His entire family is dead. Of course; he's gonna feel horrible."

I nodded slowly, "Right... why do you think he ran away in the first place?"

"It's obvious," Bella shrugged, "He probably knew about the Wolf War Four. Hell, he might have started it."

I glanced over my shoulder at the two boys sitting near the detention block.

"You think?" Justin asked Bella.

"He's psycho," Bella whispered, "What normal kid runs away from home at thirteen years old?"

Justin echoed, "What normal kid convinces another kid to run away with him?"

Jace Collins had always been a bright kid. I remembered his name from the awards he won back in primary school. So, even after a few years on the run, he didn't need to repeat. Tommy did, however. That's why he was in my grade instead of with the kids his age in Year Twelve. But Jace's decision to run away with Tommy had gotten our town in shock a few years back. We all thought Jace was wiser than that.

But then we also found out they were werewolves. Wait. Werewolves. Hearing. They could hear us.

"Guys, stop talking about this," I hurried, "Sorry to bring it up."

"What's wrong?" Bella raised an eyebrow at me.

I shifted on the grass, "I'm just... not comfortable talking about this anymore. Have you guys finished that History homework?"

They exchanged a glance; one that was becoming too common. I narrowed my eyes at their silent communication.

"Yeah," Bella said, blinking at me, "Um, I didn't understand the last question though."

Justin shook his head, "You know I didn't, babe."

And it wasn't the first time I noticed Bella's eyes fall down to the ground at the pet name.

I whispered, "I have to go to the bathroom. See you guys tomorrow."

"You aren't coming to English?" Justin asked, standing up with me.

I shook my head, "I don't feel well. I think I'm going to go sign out for the day."

"Do you need me to drive you home?" Bella asked, raising an eyebrow.

I shook my head again, "It's fine. See you both."

They communicated silently again and I let out a soft sigh as I gathered my things and walked towards the student reception.

I felt eyes crawling on me from across the yard and glanced towards the detention block. Tommy James was watching me carefully. His eyes weren't filled with darkness anymore but curiosity. I offered him a small smile and he nodded his head slightly before looking away.

I knew he'd heard the conversation.

You wanna know the ironic thing? As soon as I got home, I actually did feel sick. As in, I-ran-to-the-bathroom-and-spewed-up-everything-in-my-stomach type of sick. So, when there was a knock on the door at 5pm, instead of getting up off the lounge I literally called, "Who is it?"

I didn't even bother looking up to see if it was a murderer entering.

"It's Justin!" the 'murderer' called, "Your amazing boyfriend brought soup and that movie you like."

"Come in, Just," I replied weakly with a small smile on my face.

The front door squeaked open and then closed. The house immediately smelt of chicken soup.

Justin placed the things he brought on the coffee table and then helped me sit up, "You okay, gorgeous?"

I shook my head, "No. Thanks, Just."

He brought the soup and placed it in my lap, "Eat it up, baby. I'll put on the movie."

"Thanks," I repeated quietly.

He inserted the DVD into my old player beneath the TV and then switched it on. The opening credits to 10 Things I Hate About You began and he excused himself for the bathroom. I sat in silence by myself, slowly sipping the tea.

His phone began ringing on the table, vibrating loudly. I glanced down at the screen. I sighed softly. bella :) it read. I leant back into the couch, ignoring it. Justin ran into the room and picked up his phone, reading the Caller ID.

I tested, "Who is it, Just?"

"No one, Em," he murmured, switching it off, "Just a cousin."

Most girls would be squealing right now over his adorableness for bringing the movies and the soup and ignoring the phone call. Sure, it was cute; that's the reason I said yes for when he asked me out months ago. However, there are other reasons. The main one being that I was pretty sure that he was cheating on me with Bella Welsh.

Mum walked in after Justin had left later that night. She took one glance at me and frowned, "What's wrong?"

"Stomach bug," I murmured back.

She sighed and walked into the kitchen. She came back a moment later with a glass of water and some medicine, "Take these. I'll take you to the doctors in the morning, sweetie."

I nodded.

She glanced down at the empty soup container, "Where'd you get that?"

"Justin brought it over."

Mum rolled her eyes, "That boy... have you worked it out yet?"

"No idea, Mum," I gripped my stomach, "She called him earlier though and he... he lied about it."

Mum brushed my bangs out of my eyes, "You should be breaking his heart and finding a new friend."

I shrugged slightly, "I don't know if I could... you know."

"Deal with seeing them?" Mum finished, pecking my forehead, "It will always hurt. Why don't you go to bed, sweetie? I'll clean up here."

I nodded at her and made my way to my room. I undressed myself down to my underwear and bra and fumbled in my dresser for some pyjamas. Then I felt like Hannah Baker.

Eyes.

I could feel eyes on me.

I froze and slowly glanced over my shoulder. I peeked out of the window, the cold air scaling my bare skin. Rustle. There was something in the big tree. I examined the tree in front of me, with the leaves. I couldn't see anything big.

I pressed my lips together and took a step back, slamming the window closed and shutting the curtains tightly.

I pulled on my pyjamas and climbed into bed, still under the feeling of something outside

Song: Sure and Certain - Jimmy Eat World.

Hm, guesses at who's outside?

Fun fact: Werewolves are one of the oldest myths and legends. They date as far back in history as we can attempt to prove. There have been findings of shapeshifter myths in China, Brazil, Iceland and Haiti.

Comment your favourite song pleaaase!! I'll use them for songs that I put in the chapters :)
