Ezra
Violet.
That one name could send my heart pounding.
Violet Smith.
Those two names could send every single hair on my head to stand upright.
She was as beautiful as Venus. As dangerous as fire. As destructive as a volcano.
I wasn't entirely sure how all this werewolf stuff worked, but I've read stories. Stories about packs, secrets, alphas and betas.
Stories about mates and Lunas.
And I was certain - Violet Smith was my Luna.
But I felt inadequate. How could I prove this when I didn't even know if that stuff was real? Or if any other werewolves existed?
Which sent me to my new mission; find the pack with the alpha that bit me.

We were three-quarters of the way to Crowdy Head. Aaron and Liv were in the far back of the car, talking in low voices. Kaycee was obviously flirting with an uncomfortable-looking Jeremy in the middle. Violet was next to me which was enough to send me into haywire.
"You okay?" she asked me in a whisper.
I nodded, "Why wouldn't I be?"
"No reason," she murmured.
There was a pregnant pause.
I quietly asked, "Are you okay?"
She'd donned her hoodie and her jeans for some shorts and a singlet top, which was peculiar considering it was only 20 degrees Celsius.
Vi shifted in her seat, "Just a little warm."
Not taking my eyes off the road, I felt her forehead with my free hand.
I frowned, "You feel fine to me."
Vi shrugged, "Not me in particular. As in, I feel like I'm standing beside a fire."
"A fire?" I chuckled slightly.
Vi sighed loudly, "You're right, that's weird. Forget it."
I smirked, a sudden confidence pouring from me, "Am I that good-looking? I mean, I knew I was somewhat special in the looks department but I didn't think I was hot enough to be called a fire."
Vi smacked my upper arm, "Obnoxious pig."
"Truthful wolf," I corrected, still chuckling.
"And to think," she continued in her gorgeous British accent, "you were stuttering when I met you."
My confidence dwindled again and I found myself quietened again. I murmured again, "So about what I smelt at the truck stop..."
Vi grew serious. She crossed her legs on the seat and she sighed, "I'd rather not consider that possibility, Ez."
Ez again.
I nodded at her, "Understandable and sure. I'll still think it over, though."
In my peripheral vision, I saw her move to look at me.
I took my eyes off the road to stare back at her and got trapped in her ever-blue eyes. I offered the smallest smile and she blushed, looking away but I remained staring.
"Stop," she ordered suddenly.
I jumped, "What?"
"Stop the car!" she screeched.
I turned my gaze back to the road and stomped on the brakes pedal. The car stopped. We all lurched forward and then back harshly. The passengers in the back let out collective groans as I rushed out of the car.
I ran to the front of the car and examined the road in front of me. There was nothing there.
A chilling feeling crept inside of me. I glanced around the bush that lined either side of the empty road.
"Where is it?" Violet asked herself, staring at the ground.
"Wh-where's what-t?" I stumbled across my words.
Violet scuffed her boot into the road before answering, "It was a white wolf you were going to crash into. I saw it."
I frowned deeply, "Let's, um... Let's get you back in the car. I think you're sick..."
Violet shook her head admantly, "I saw it, Ez! There was a wolf staring directly at us! I know it!"
"Vi," I soothed, "Come on. Let's get you rugged up."
"Ezra!" she half-shouted, "I know I saw a wolf. I'm not crazy. There was a wolf in the middle of the road."
I was going to respond but my brain picked up on something else, prickles shooting down my back.
I took a sniff of the air and caught the brief scent of woodsmoke... and wolf. I straightened up, glaring at the bush behind me. I examined it with squinted eyes. Then I heard it. Footsteps, most definitely human ones. Maybe 50 feet away.
"What is it?" Violet took a lithe step to stand beside me, our arms brushing.
I tried to ignore the electricity flowing through me.
I murmured, "It's a werewolf."
"It?" a deep voice, Australian accent, shouted from within the woods, "I am a he, thanks."
I ordered, "Get back in the car, Vi."
"No."
"Violet!" I glared at her, "In the car!"
She gulped, staring back at me. For once, I didn't feel entranced in her eyes. I repeated again, much softer, "Get in the car, please."
"Get in the car, Vi," the boy in the bush repeated in a high falsetto, coming closer, "Ugh, so controlling. Princess, don't let this guy objectify you like that."
I glared back at the bush, unsure where to focus my gaze.
Vi whispered, "I'll be in the car..."
I heard her walk away and the car door opened and closed. I crossed my arms, straightening myself up, "Who are you?"
"I could ask you the same thing," the voice was a lot darker now, "After all, alpha, you're in my territory."
"Territory?" I narrowed my eyes, "What do you mean?"
Just like that, a boy slid out from behind a tree. He was a year or two older than me, a few inches taller with much more muscle. He was barefoot with no shirt and just wore a pair of jeans.
He smirked though his eyes remained cold, "You must have only recently been bitten if you don't know the tribal laws."
"Tribal laws?" I repeated, "What are you going on about?"
The boy sniffed the air, "You must be only a year old, werewolf. This your twelfth full moon? Smells like it. So... who bit you?"
"I don't know," I shrugged truthfully, still cautious, "Never saw his face."
"Or hers," the boy smirked again, "Here we don't discriminate against the other gender..."
I saw his eyes flicker in Vi's direction and then back to me.
A soft, wolfy growl emerged. It took me a moment to realise I'd made that sound.
The boy grinned, "I'm correct. She is your Luna. So, what's your pack?"
"Pack?" I muttered.
"Pack," he confirmed, "I know you aren't Red Tribe, Blue Moon or White Stripes... so what are you?"
"I don't know," I shrugged, "I don't even know how this entire thing works."
The boy smirked again before holding out a hand, "Max Deaton. Alpha of Crimson Lake. I'll make you a deal?"
"What is it?" I raised an eyebrow.
"I'll tell you all you need to know about us werewolves and in return... we form an alliance."
"Why do you need an ally?"
"There's a werewolf war going on at the moment. It's called WW3. Wolf War 3. Red Tribe wants to get rid of White Stripes. Everyone's forming allies to make sure they don't get involved on the wrong side."
"Who's side are you on?"
"The White Stripes. They aint ever done any harm to anyone."
I glanced to the car. Vi looked pointedly away from me whilst the others looked on curiously.
Slowly, I nodded, "Yeah. It's a deal."
We shook on it.
***
"This is the pack house," Max informed, walking us up the dirt track in the bush, "All werewolves over eighteen move in here. The children and teens stay with their parents and try to keep their identity a secret."
We walked in the front door of the two-storey house to be met with chaos. Loud music was blasting, a massive fight had broken out in the hallway and a bunch of young adults were gathered in the entrance hall.
Max surveyed the area before letting out a howl that made even my legs shake. Vi fell into me, away from the blast and I caught her by her arms. I righted her and she scowled at me, smoothing her clothes down.
So... she was still mad at me.
Max shouted over the music, "Turn that crap stereo off!"
One woman ran to it and quickly muted it.
Max nodded, "Crimson Lake, this is an unregistered pack. Ezra here is their Alpha."
One guy scoffed, "Only two of 'em are wolves."
"A pack isn't the wolf. The pack is the family," Max said, like he was reciting it.
"Right..." the guy bowed his head in submission - something Aaron had done often.
Max continued, "We've made a deal - I'll tell them about the werewolf world in return for their alliance."
"How can we trust them?" a girl asked.
"How can we trust anyone during WW3?" another guy scoffed at her.
"Take a smell and tell me you can't feel the honesty," Max shook his head, "Ezra just wants to protect them all. We're going to help him by first getting into the conference room and telling him all about the full moon."
