Chapter Five

^Gif is of Kristy Sanders :|

I narrowed my eyes at him, about to snap something before Aaron cut in, "You saw us. In the forest."

"No shit, Sherlock," I rolled my eyes at him, "Of course, we saw you. You guys werewolves. And then you were humans. You're freaking werewolves!"

Ezra sighed loudly, "Yeah, just shout it out, why don't ya?"

I let out a small giggle. Then a laugh. I cried out, "I'm losing my mind. Nothing makes sense anymore."

"If it helps, I'm plain human," Jeremy raised a hand, "Just like you."

If anything, that confused me even more. How was his younger brother a werewolf when he wasn't?

"You, um," I thought for words, "You aren't one of them?"

"No," Jeremy shook his head, "Ezra can explain if he can find the words."

My eyes turned to Ezra's, hoping he could shine some light on the situation.

Ezra sighed, "I got bitten almost a year ago. About two more weeks and it will be a year. I'd just been walking in the forest when, out of nowhere, a wolf attacked me... I was sent to the hospital and they said I healed incredibly fast. About a week later I discovered why... it had turned me into a werewolf."

"Was it a werewolf itself?" I raised an eyebrow.

"No idea," Ezra shrugged, "I haven't seen another werewolf since."

My gaze flicked to Aaron, "But..."

"Two months ago," Aaron began, "these two idiots decided to take me on a camping trip. Now, at the time, I didn't know about Ezra's lycanthrope state. I'm an avid sleepwalker and so I found myself, one morning, hanging off the edge of a cliff somehow with Ezra and Jeremy trying to pull me up. Jeremy couldn't hold onto me any longer so Ezra was holding onto one of my arms by himself. But he couldn't hold onto me forever. He made a last resort to bite my wrist just before I fell. That way, when I landed at the bottom of the cliff, I didn't die. I was just very injured."

Aaron had been through that much as a fourteen-year-old? Fear for the small boy coursed through me. But it was too late to do anything.

"As far as we're aware," Jeremy said, "They might be the only two werewolves on the planet."

At this, Aaron nodded slowly but I saw something different. The way Ezra's eyes flicked to Jeremy in warning. Ezra and Jeremy were keeping something from Aaron. I even saw that yesterday.

The bell rang and Jeremy grinned, "Let us escort you to class?"

"You're barmy," I muttered and I stormed away from two lycanthropes and a human being.

I'd just stepped out of second-period Maths when something hard rammed into me. It took me a moment to realise a human being was hugging me and another moment to realise the person was crying.

I recognised the faint sobs and I reeled back, "Liv? What's wrong?"

My sister stepped back with red-rimmed eyes and wet cheeks. I narrowed my eyes, "Who did this to you?"

Liv whispered numbly, "Sabrina Newport..."

"Who's Sabrina Newport?"

"A bitch," she murmured.

"What did she do to make you cry?" I tucked her hair behind her ear.

Liv sighed, "I should be used to it by now, right? I should be... I should be completely used to girls calling me things I'm not. But I'm not used to it."

"What did she call you?"

Liv's mouth opened and closed multiple times before making any sound, "She... she called me... f-fat."

"What?!" I shouted, probably startling everyone within a kilometre radius, "You're not, though!"

Liv crossed her arms, "I know that. But it still hurts."

"That's why people say stuff," I soothed, "to make others feel bad and to make themselves feel better by comparison."

Liv took in a deep breath but didn't reply.

"Who is she?"

Liv's eyes flitted to mine, "You aren't gonna harass her are you?"

"No," I shook my head.

Liv gestured a hand to a group of girls under a tree.

"Which one?"

"The red-head."

"Okay," I nodded, looking at the girl, "Now say something bad about her."

"What?!" Liv jumped.

"Only I'll hear and I won't tell anyone," I promised, "Between you and me, say something bad about her in return to make you feel better."

Liv pressed her lips together and then said, "She's a little too thin?"

"Good," I smiled, "Did that make you feel any better?"

Liv shrugged, "The insult stays inside me."

If Liv had any flaw it would be her self-confidence. Liv is perfect inside and out but she can't see that. Everyone else does and some decide to bring her down for it. Some may call Liv humble but she honestly just is clueless to her beauty.

I wrapped an arm around my sister's shoulders as someone called my name. I squeezed her shoulders, "You're beautiful. You're well-spoken, talented, driven. No one can tell you that you aren't any of those things."

Liv nodded slowly, "I-I just... don't understand anything that's happening. As soon as we got here I made a foundation in Aaron. He'd be my safety net. Last night... last night all that changed. He's a freaking lycanthrope, Vi..."

"Violet!" Kristy called my name again, "Get your hot little ass over here!"

I flitted my eyes towards the large group and back to my sister, "I have to go but I promise we'll speak about this later tonight. Alright?"

"Alright," she nodded slowly.

Rachael gushed, "Oh, and isn't Josh Adams just the cutest!"

"Who's Josh Adams?" I raised an eyebrow, clueless.

Kristy sighed, "The hottest guy in twelfth grade."

"How have you not heard of him yet?" Rachael frowned, "I thought you two had Music class at the same time..."

I shook my head, "I'm in the eleventh grade."

"You're in Year Eleven?" Rachael scrunched up her nose, "I'm so confused on why Kristy wants you to sit with us."

And we'd come in a full circle. We'd made some progress at the beginning of lunch and I'd learnt a bit about Rachael and vice versa but, apparently, it had been two steps forward, five steps back.

"Hey girls," a deep voice said and Mark sat next to us.

Eric sat next to Rachael and she promptly adjusted herself so she was sitting in his lap. She was short enough that she tucked in comfortably to rest under the crook of his neck.

Mark grinned at Kristy, "Did you hear-"

"-about Kaycee and Drew?" she raised an eyebrow, finishing his sentence.

Mark sighed, "I'm never going to get gossip before you, am I?"

"Nope," she smirked, "For those of you who don't know, Kaycee and Drew were found making out in the detention room during recess. Mrs McKellaf had left some tests in there yesterday and she walked in on them about to hook up."

These were just names with no identity to me but I could tell by everyone else's reactions that this didn't happen everyday.

As if on cue, a girl walked past with her head buried in a science textbook and Rachael called, "Hey Kaycee... you and Drew going steady now?"

The girl shot Rachael an annoyed look and bit back, "You only want to know if he's still available for you to hook up with."

Rachael gasped in shock, "I've got a boyfriend, thank you very much!"

"Yeah," Kaycee scowled, "But you don't treat him like your boyfriend."

She closed her book with a slam and marched to go sit beneath a tree by herself.

I watched her for a moment as her stormy look ceased and she divulged herself in the information.

Eric muttered, "What did she mean, Rachael?"

Rachael sniffed indignantly, "She was lying. I would never do that to you, Eric."

"Right," Eric rolled his eyes, "Mark, let's go see what the guys are up to."

Rachael crossed her arms as Eric pushed her gently out of his lap and stood up with the other boy, moving to their own group.

Kristy and I were dead silent as Rachael silently fumed.

Then she raged, "So what if I hook up with other guys from time to time? I'm sure Eric does it with other girls when he's drunk. Who cares?"

I murmured, "The difference would be that you're sober and in your right state of mind when you're with another guy."

Rachael let out a small shriek to me and then shouted, "Go! I can't stand having you here. Get out of my eyesight. Now!"

I didn't protest but just threw Kristy a sympathetic smile. I grabbed my bag and stood. I smirked at Rachael, "Come and see me in ten years when you have nothing to live for. Maybe then I'll offer an ounce of sympathy."

I hooked my bag over my shoulder and already knew which direction I was heading in.

"Don't you dare walk away from me," Rachael threatened.

"Which is it?" I rolled my eyes, "Get out of your eyesight or not walk away from you?"

Rachael stayed silent and didn't reply. The fury in her eyes was enough to know I'd played her again.

I walked away from her and marched across the grass area, sitting down under the tree.

Kaycee slowly looked up from her textbook and stared at me with wide eyes. Then they narrowed to slits, "What do you want?"

"A friend," I admitted, "Rachael's not a very good one. Kristy probably won't come after me, either. Are you a good friend?"

Kaycee stared at me for a long moment before offering me her hand, "Kaycee Walker."

I shook her hand with a beam, "Violet Smith."

"I know," she nodded miniscully, "You're in my Film Studies class."

"You're in Year Eleven?" I said with wide eyes.

"Yeah," she nodded again, "Everyone's been wondering why you've been hanging out with the Twelfth Grade Bitch Squad."

"Probably because I didn't know how to say 'no'," I blushed.

Kaycee chuckled lightly, "And you're also friends with Jeremy and Ezra, right?"

I shrugged, "I'm not really sure if I'd call them 'friends'..."

Kaycee stared at me for a long moment and then sent me a small smile, "Have you been to the forest yet?"

My eyes flashed to hers. What did she mean by that?

I nodded slowly, "I got lost in there last night, accidentally, with my sister."

Kaycee smirked, "My mum's the sheriff of the town. She said she got a call about two girls gone missing. She knew you two were in the forest right away, though."

"How?"

Kaycee sent me a sly smile, "Does it mean anything to you if I say I'm Ezra's cousin?"

She has a lycanthrope as a cousin? Wait, does she even know he's a werewolf?

Kaycee whispered, "I know you know. Ezra and I are attached at the hip half the time. He came straight to my place last night and called my mum telling her everything. Me and my mum both know about Ezra and Aaron's... condition."

"I guess it helps, right?"

"Helps what?" she raised an eyebrow.

"That the town sheriff knows about the supernatural occurrences of the town?"

The bell rang faintly and Kaycee grinned, "Yes it does. Ready for Film Studies? We can go be confused, female human beings together?"

"Sounds perfect to me," I chuckled lightly and followed after her.

It seems like now I had an actual friend.
