Chapter Four
Y/n's P.O.V.
"Oh my god, that sounds terrible, you must've been frightened," I gasped after they finished telling the story of their misfortune from a man named Count Olaf, to a terrible bacteria called Medusoid Mycelium that almost killed them.
"It was very nerve-racking, but at least we had each other," Violet admitted taking Sunny and Klaus' hands. "I wish you didn't have to go through that, nobody your age should have to go through so many trials and tribulations," I sighed.
Not only was I surprised that everything I heard in The Daily Punctilio was true, but I was also surprised to discover that they were once in the care of Esme Squalor too. But, the only difference was that when I was in her care, she was unmarried.
When the Baudelaire's talked about staying with her, they mentioned she had a husband named Jerome. I had never heard of him, but I was glad that he was nothing like his wife, and tried to treat the Baudelaire's with respect.
"Thank you for your sympathy Y/n, but that was almost two years ago when it began," Violet said. Klaus said nothing, but took a spoonful of his soup and looked at me while he ate. God, he's so cute.
For some reason, I was drawn to him like metal drawn to a magnet. His short, brown curly hair. His beautiful brown eyes and those big round glasses. I was almost tempted to take off those glasses and see what he looked like without them on. But, I held back the urge, which wasn't easy.
I took my eyes off of him and went back to eating my soup until the last spoonful of broth was gone. "I can help you clear the table if you want," I offered to Violet. She gave me a small smile as she gathered up the bowls and placed them in my hands.
"Thank you again for your kindness Baudelaire's, it has been a long time since anyone has shown me kindness," I said as I rinsed the dishes in the sink. "No need to thank us, we are happy to help you,"
"Ogo!" Sunny shrieked. I was confused and looked over at Violet wondering what the young toddler meant. "What my sister means is she likes you and she's happy you're here," Violet translated.
I was amazed at how Violet could translate what her sister said. Sunny looked up at me, and gave me a toothy grin showing her four sharp teeth, that almost reminded me of vampire fangs.
"Well I like you too Sunny," I smiled, bending down to hug her gently. Suddenly she grabbed my hand and bit me! I was surprised at first, looking up at Violet wondering if she was going to step in and help me.
"Don't be alarmed, she bites lightly if she likes you, she has a funny way of showing it to other people," Violet explained quickly calming my nerves. I let Sunny nibble on my finger for a little while until Klaus walked up to me.
"Since you'll be staying with us for a while, would you like me to show you around?" Klaus asked. I nodded, and he helped me up off of the floor and led me through the cottage. It wasn't small, but it wasn't big either.
Klaus had showed me the bathroom where I took my bath, a small sitting room with only a few chairs, and a small circular table. Then he showed me the bedroom, there were only two beds a small dresser and a cradle. You can stay in this room with us," Klaus said as he led me into the room.
It looked like a very cozy room, but there was one slight problem. "Where am I going to sleep?" I asked. Klaus looked over at me. "Sunny and Violet sometimes sleep together in one bed, Beatrice sleeps in the cradle and I usually have the other bed," he explained.
I would like to sleep on the bed, but it would be inappropriate to ask. "Well that's okay; I can sleep on the floor with pillows and blankets," I said breaking the brief silence between us.
"No, you shouldn't have to sleep on the floor, you can sleep next to me," he offered. Even though Klaus had said that it was okay, I still felt uneasy, like I ate something that didn't agree with me and it was sitting at the bottom of my stomach waiting to burst at any moment.
"Are you sure? Don't be afraid to tell me if you feel uncomfortable," I asked. Klaus let out a small, stifled giggle. "What's so funny?"
"You say are you sure a lot," he answered. I let out a small laugh of my own, "I just like to double-check to make sure if people are sure about the things they say," I shrugged.
"But, I am okay with you sleeping next to me, I will keep my hands to myself I promise you can trust me," he assured. I nodded knowing that he would stay true to his word. "I'm working at the library tomorrow, would you like to come with me?" I was surprised, and my heart began racing again. He's asking if I want to go to work with him, why?
"I don't know, are you allowed to do that?" Without hesitation, Klaus nodded, "I work for only five hours, but if you want, I can show around the library and help you find some books you might like," he offered.
It had been a while since I read a book considering that I have been living on the streets in constant fear that someone was going to take me and hurt me. So I didn't have time to read books, but now knowing that I was safe with the Baudelaire's, I saw a glimmer of hope that I would be able to live a normal life again.
"But, what about Sunny and Beatrice? They're too young to be left home alone," I asked concerned about the little ones. "Don't worry about it, Violet's off of work tomorrow, so she'll watch them," he answered as he slowly walked towards me.
His brown eyes looked into my e/c eyes, and it felt like I had a dozen butterflies floating around in my stomach. I couldn't stop looking at him. "Why are you staring at me?" I asked. "Because you're beautiful," he answered.
My heart began to beat harder against my chest, and it felt like at any moment, it could explode. "Okay, I'll go with you, under one condition," "Anything," Klaus whispered. His brown eyes continued to stare into the murky depths of my soul, waiting to hear what I was about to request of him. Should I say it? Will he be flattered?
"Could you show me some of Shakespeare's work? I've heard that his work is elegant and romantic," His eyes softened, and through my eyes, he seemed slightly disappointed. "Of course, Shakespeare's work is very intriguing,"
Suddenly, Violet walked into the room with Beatrice and Sunny. "What are you two talking about?" she asked. Klaus and I stared at one another wondering who was going to answer Violet's question. Klaus didn't say anything, so I decided to take the reins of this conversation.
"Klaus asked me if I wanted to go to the library with him tomorrow, and I asked him if he could show me some of Shakespeare's work," Violet gave a small, sneaky smile, and walked over to her bed slowly.
"Okay," she said. I didn't know that Violet that well yet, but something told me that she suspected that something was going on between Klaus and me, even though there wasn't anything at all.
"We should probably get to bed, I have to get early," Klaus said as he walked over and turned on the alarm clock. I walked over to the other side of his bed and laid down. It did feel weird that I was going to sleep next to a boy that I barely knew. I watched as he took off his glasses and turned off the lamp on the bedside table.
The only light that was visible in the room was the moonlight that shown through the white blinds that covered the window. "Goodnight Klaus," I whispered. "Goodnight Y/n," he whispered back. I turned over in the bed facing away from him, and slowly succumbed to slumber, feeling Klaus lightly breathing on my arm.
