Chapter 1
Cameron's P.O.V
Moving wasn't all that bad, sure I'd miss my beasties, but I'd see them again, it was the reason behind the move I worried about. A Nemeton being activated wasn't something I was too keen on. Nemeton's can be found all over the world and when around one it can strengthen your abilities while in proximity, an active Nemeton is like a beacon calling to all supernatural beings and drawing them in. To witches like myself, it could help you reach new levels of power, and not just while in proximity of it, I'd learnt that from a book I'd borrowed from my mum. She had no idea I'd over heard them talking.
My mum had sensed it the second it had been activated, it helped we were only living a state over in Arizona. The second it had washed over us like a wave I had looked at my mum across the table, she had stood abruptly and closed her eyes like trying to sense something. Whatever it was it only took her a second to latch onto it.
"We need to talk." She'd said to my dad, who had watched us both with confusion. See I'm a halfling Witch, my mum is a Witch but my dad is a human.
We were in boxes a week later and the house was already sold, we were moving to a town in California, called Beacon Hills County. A fitting name for a town containing a 'Beacon' for the supernatural.
I wasn't quite sure how to feel about the move. I didn't even have time to think of my social repercussions and changing schools, I was to busy worrying about an activated Nemeton that my goodbyes to my friends were not all they should've been.
My mum pacing my training as a Witchling to ensure I understood the importance of everything I learned, had got me studying ahead behind her back for entertainment. I couldn't help it, especially with her office being filled with books on all sorts of things, that's where I'd pinched the Nemeton one from, there was a whole book on them. Granted it wasn't as big as a lot of the others, but it was still entirely dedicated to the tree.
I had read about the Nemeton and what it meant in supernatural culture and especially what it meant in Witch culture. A Nemeton was like a boost, or shock charge for Witches. It made us stronger and could allow us to access new wells of power within ourselves, but it also attracted the wrong type of attention, like Demons, Necromancers, Werewolves, Pagen gods and other wicked creatures. Living in a town that contained an, activated, Nemeton, was going to dangerous.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" I asked my mum as I leaned forward in the backseat, to look at her in the passengers. My dad smiled reassuringly at me through the rear view mirror.
"It is my duty as a Coven leader to investigate this, new issue." My mum explained with out looking back at me. I sighed and flopped back against my seat. She still refused to explain to me why we were moving, I mean, I knew, but I would've liked some honesty, I wasn't a kid anymore.
I looked out the window as I watched the near pitch black forest line go by. We'd just entered Beacon Hills and it was already ten thirty.
I could feel the Nemetons pull. It had only gotten stronger the darker the night had become as we'd gotten closer to California, and now that we were in town, I felt like electricity was running through my veins, sparking and buzzing. It was an odd feeling I had never experienced before, not even when using lightening. How mum thought she was able to keep it from me was just baffling.
"Are we nearly there?" I asked in boredom as I leaned forward slightly in my seat again, this time looking at my dad. He smiled at me through the mirror again.
"Nearly kiddo." He answered with an apologetic tone. I huffed a sigh as I leaned back in my seat. This whole, trying to keep the Nemeton a secret from me thing, had really ticked me off, and now I was in an usually foul mood.
"Sorry, I know it's sucked being cooped up in the car all day, but you've been really patient and we'll be there soon and you can fall into bed and crash. I hear the movilists arrived an hour ago and everythings already inside." Dad explained as he gave me an encouraging smile. I sighed but cracked a greatful one back nonetheless. It wasn't all his fault, mum had probably suggested not telling me about the whole Nemeton thing.
I'd kept it quiet myself, so I couldn't really be all that mad. I'd refrained from explaining to my friends why we were moving, only settling on telling them it was a lame Coven leader thing. I just knew Jay would blow up when I told her, Ryan probably wouldn't care, cause he's far more chill.
I grabbed my phone, from where I'd left it on the middle seat beside me, and opened it to shoot them both a text in our group chat.
'Entered the new town, super tried from stupid drive, wish you guys could come with.'
I clicked my phone back off and dropped it back on the seat beside me. Jaylan would still be studying and she muted her phone when she did, Ryan would be sound asleep, that kid could sleep through the end of the world.
"Hey Cam, we're here." Dad said excitedly as he pulled into the driveway of an unlit two story house. From what I could tell it was probably light in colour, but it was hard to see in the dark, the street lamps doing little to illuminate the house front.
I yawned and shook my head as I undid my seatbelt and pushed the car door open, huffing as I pulled myself from the backseat tiredly.
