An Unusual Elevator Ride - _sashi

Trigger Warning - Murder

Humans are the stupidest creatures to walk on Earth.

Before you all take drastic measures to end the poor life of this soul, hear me out okay?

What's the one thing they hold over other animals, other organisms? Their intelligence, right? They are said to be far more evolved than other organisms walking on this planet. But what good has it ever done to them? They could have used their minds to solve some real problems, huge ass problems. But no! They had to think of new and creative solutions to the simplest of activities and then get proud of their non-existent thinking capabilities.

Like this man did.

It began around 30 minutes ago. I was in the basement of a tall building, following mom towards the elevator. As we walked, I looked at her waist-length blonde hair tied up in a ponytail, bobbing with each step, her petite yet glamorous body wrapped up in a blue summer dress that paired with her brown eyes showcasing her beautiful mid-twenties figure. She was truly beautiful inside out.

We both were excited because we were going to meet dad. My dad. Not her husband. I know it's confusing, but isn't everything? If I remember correctly, it was her 'boyfriend'.

We got in the elevator and it stopped at a couple more floors and by the time we reached the 8th floor, there were three other ladies along with us. There was a typical awkward silence between them all. Typical for strangers and especially typical for strangers in an elevator. I was bored so I named the three ladies in my head. The one with a bob haircut - lady 1. She seemed like the oldest, around 30 maybe. Then the lady with shoulder-length red hair, who was busy on her phone - lady 2. She seemed to be the same age as mom. And then the last one. She appeared to be the youngest, probably just 20 and had a pale complexion.

As the elevator opened again on the 9th floor, a man, probably in his early thirties, entered. I could tell just by looking at him that there was something off about him. He had this aura around him. You know the one that makes you rethink all your past mistakes and ask God for forgiveness? One look and I knew he was trouble.

One good thing about that man. He wasn't a disappointment. The moment the door closed, he dreadfully proved me right by pushing a big red button. If I was correct, the button was for emergencies. I looked around and saw no one was dying. Did I remember wrong then?

I could feel confusion radiate out of every other living soul present in the closed box. However, before any of us could interview the great man present among us, he himself spoke, "So, I bet you're wondering why I've gathered you all here today."

To say that he solved our doubts would be a clear lie and to say we were still struggling would be an understatement. Was this statement supposed to make any sense?

"Excuse me" A lady spoke up. I looked at her to see that it was lady 2, her phone in her back pocket now, her murdering glare fixed on the stranger. "Could you please start the elevator again? I am in kind of a hurry."

"I don't think I will." The man mused as he pulled from his back pocket a reflecting thingy. Ah! I knew what that was! It was called a go... gon. No, a gun.

On seeing what was in his hands, lady 2 and mom let out a shriek and lady 1 gasped audibly. Lady 3 stood frozen at the back.

The man was clearly enjoying this as he explained further, looking each of them in their eyes turn by turn, "You all must have heard of the recent murders in your locality, no? Well, I wasn't really meaning to kill all of them. You see, I am in the search of a wife as all young bachelors like me are. But I'm not like them. I own a string of casinos around the country and since they are all based on luck, I want my wife to be a symbol of luck. What other way to test that than check her luck, no?"

"So we are going to play a small game." he continued pacing around in the very small space available. "This gun," he said raising it above and scaring the ladies even further, "Has 4 bullets and 2 empty chambers in it. There are four of you here. I am gonna randomly put it to your head and pull the trigger. If you are lucky, you will survive and get the honour of becoming my wife, isn't that great?" He squealed happily. "But if not, ah! We all know what then. Let's not kill the mood by talking about it."

I looked around at the ladies, really unsure if the psychopath here was actually speaking what I was thinking he meant. Lady 1 and lady 2 were clutching each other's hands very tightly, all thoughts of being strangers vanished into the thin air. Lady 3 was sobbing quietly leaning against the elevator wall. Finally, I turned my gaze toward mom. I could see her eyebrows pulled up together and her eyelids tensed up. Her lips were shaking and she was terrified. I could feel the fear rolling off each of them. It was intense. At the same time, the excitement rolling off the man was sickening and I just knew he was gonna go through with his plan.

Again, he didn't disappoint me as he pointed the nozzle towards lady 3.

"I don't like the view of a sobbing face. So we are starting with you." And with a blink, he pulled the trigger.

As we heard the bang of the gun and the thud of a body, everything suddenly seemed more real.

"Such a shame that she wasn't lucky enough. She was beautiful but I must say her practices were a little revolting. Never mind." The man shook his head and with a deranged smile turned towards lady 1.

"You are next darling." He only gave her time to open her mouth as with a bang, she too was proved unlucky, finding her place next to lady 3 on the floor.

Another bang and lady 2 was also compelled to leave this world at the hands of a psychotic killer.

Mom looked down, scared to her core, at the three corpses lying at her feet. She was sobbing furiously now, frightened out of her mind. I could feel her desperation to live and will to do anything which could take her away from this pathetic excuse for a human.

The man spoke up once again, silencing her sobs as he too looked down. "Such a waste of beautiful specimens." Then looking at mom, he continued. "I really wish you are lucky enough sweetheart."

I wished that too.

He pointed the gun at her forehead and with the last bang we found out that she wasn't fortunate enough either.

A perfect hole in their foreheads and dried-up tears on their cheeks, all the ladies were looking at me, the horrors done by the man clearly etched upon their faces.

Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw the man push the red button once more as the elevator came back to life. It reached the ground floor and opened up. He gave the corpses one last look and clicking his tongue left the lift after muttering some concluding words.

"How sad none of them were favoured enough. Guess I will have to go and hijack other elevators. I still need to find my wife."

So, this is what I meant. It is so simple finding a wife. But he had to go ahead and complicate it. Who knows how long he will continue to search for his wife and how many more innocent ladies he will kill in cold blood for this search?

Humans are indeed stupid. And I am not the only dog who thinks so.
