I love Wattpad but ...

I have been a part of this site since 2012 over on my writer profile and I have loved Wattpad since I joined. While I don't agree with a lot of the changes they have made to the site over the years, I'm still here and I'm not sure I could ever completely leave.

With that being said, I will say if you want to be taken seriously as an author then Wattpad is not the place to be bragging about posting your writing. To a lot of published authors Wattpad is one huge joke. I'm serious. It's considered the epitome of awful fanfiction writing. Actually, awful writing in general. If we read something out in the world that's bad the general comment is, "That's Wattpad writing". Seems mean, yes, but the fact is that Wattpad has become infamous for awful writing with bland characters, plots that haven't been thought through, a general lack of research about the subject the author is writing about, and non-English speakers using Google translate to write in English (which is just a horrible, horrible idea. Nothing makes sense when run through Google translate). Not to mention crappy fanfictions with awful premises, like the band members kidnapping someone then falling in love with them. Their publication platform is known for publishing badly written teen fiction. No clue how any of their stuff sells because most of it is truly badly written. The Kissing Booth comes to mind. I have no clue how it not only sold but became a Netflix movie. It was bad and horribly cliché.

If you want to be taken seriously as an author, try Inkitt. It's, in general, a more serious platform. That's not to say there isn't some awful writing over there, but it isn't considered synonymous with bad writing like Wattpad.

I do love Wattpad. It is the best setup of all the writing sites I've joined. While I'm not thrilled with the direction they've taken turning it into a social media platform that seems to be moving away from writing, I still like it. And I still have friends here that I would miss if I left. Wattpad used to be all about writing and promoting new authors, now all they seems to care about is how much money they can make off things. They no longer promote those hidden writers, the home page is all about the 'Wattpad stars'. The stories they think they might be able to make some dough off of. A few of my books used to pop up on the home page, not anymore. They claim they're here for undiscovered writers but it certainly doesn't feel like the truth anymore. It's one of the main reasons I pulled almost all of my writing from my profile. No one cares anymore. My books never appear in Wattpad's feed so no one knows about them and therefor no one reads them. Without the chat boards to promote on we've all been tossed into a slush pile and fighting your way free of it to get noticed is nearly impossible. It's even worse for those of us who are graphic designers as well. Without the MDC boards to post on, getting noticed without being part of a group is impossible (and most of the groups are so badly run even then it seems useless). I've opened and closed my shop multiple times in frustration. I miss the chat boards, they were an epic place to gather and find others with the same interests as you. My Supernatural chat thread was an awesome place, with awesome people. We had several incarnations of it because it reached the maximum number of posts many times. I miss a lot about the old Wattpad, not everything, but a lot of it. The camaraderie is one thing I miss the most. Yes, there were tiffs and idiots, but drama and petty behavior seems to be the norm lately and I'm too old for middle school drama. I've lived through my own middle school crap, I don't want a repeat.

All in all, Wattpad is a nice site, but it isn't really for anyone who wants to be a serious writer. It's more a place to try out your skills before you move on to better things.
