Chapter 3

No ones p.o.v

Ezra kept turning and twisting not being able to get used to the comfortness of his new bed. Sleep was threatening to take him but, he couldn't allow himself to let his guard down. Not again. He still couldn't believe he agreed to Kanan's offer. He didn't even know this man and he let him take him to his house. Who would do that? And then he ate the food he and his wife offered just like that? For all he knew it could have been poisoned or filled with drugs. At least that's what Kallus used to do. But, it had already been almost four hours since he ate and no side effects were shown. Could it really be? Could someone really care for him? Or was it just another trick? Another small portion of happiness before sadness? They can't be that nice. He was supposed to believe that what? They were just two good people ready to take in and care for a strange kid just out of the goodness of their hearts?

Even if they didn't want to harm him, they were certainly not taking him in for free. They would be asking for something on return at some point and he had nothing to give. It's better if he left now when he still had time. Silently he dragged his legs off the bed and stood up.

He didn't know what else to do. He didn't want to be sent to an orphanage. He remembered how it was. He looked around. He didn't have any money to give them but maybe if he helped around the house? Hera looked a lot tired and at times a little sad. Ezra doubted Kanan knew anything when it came to cleaning.

He silently opened the door of the guest room and walked down the stairs. The bruises hurted terribly each time the fabric of the night clothes Kanan lend him made contact with his skin. Thankfully he was so thin that Kanan's night clothes were too big to constantly touch the bruises. He reached the kitchen and silently searched for any sort of cleaning equipment.

He tried not to groan from a sudden migraine. The doctor did say that it was normal and just a side effect from whatever they gave him there. He tried to recall the name of the medicine but it was just too long and too difficult to pronounce.

He finally located the cleaning supplies and started working. First the windows, then the floors and finally all the kitchen and front of the house. He couldn't do anything on the second floor for fear of waking up Kanan and Hera.

He sat on the couch feeling exhausted.  He supposed closing his eyes for a second would no be a problem. He would get up and go back to the guest room before dawn. He laid his head back and let his eyelids fall a the sweet wave of exhaustion took him away in a land of unsettling dreams.

A couple hours later Kanan woke up very thirsty and decided to get up and get a glass of water. In his half asleep-half awake state of mind, Kanan did not realize that the kitchen was way more cleaner than yesterday or any other day the last couple of months. Only after he placed the now empty glass on the sink that he noticed that the dishes were washed, the kitchen was shining and so were the floors.

Wait what? Did Hera woke up in the middle of the night to...clean? Sure Hera enjoyed cleaning the house regularly but-

A soft snore drew Kanan out of his thoughts. He turned around to see a certain boy sitting asleep on the couch. He sighed as he walked up to the couch and sat next to Ezra. He should have expected something like this to happen. After years of abuse, he knew Ezra was not keen on he idea of coming to live with him. But it was either that or the orphanage. It sure is not easy to sleep peacefully in a house full of strangers whose motives he did not understand. He could guess why Ezra cleaned the house in the middle of the night. For Ezra love did not come for free, it came with a price.

Kanan sighed once again and laid Ezra on the couch, as to make him more comfortable. They would have to work on certain things. Deep down Kanan knew that Ezra would never have the life of a normal child his age, but still, he was determined to give the kid the life he deserved. Kanan stayed with Ezra a little more, coming in and out of reality. Since he was awake might as well make some breakfast. Ezra barely ate anything last night and Hera always appreciated when she didn't have to cook in the morning.

Kanan stood up giving Ezra one last look before he went to the kitchen and washed his hands before opening the fridge. Twenty minutes later, the smell of pancakes filled the house. Kanan heard Ezra shift in the couch and groan as he got up. He didn't turn around though. His smiled widen as he felt Ezra instantly stopped his movements as he acknowledged Kanan's presence.

Kanan tried to hide his amusement as he carefully placed to last couple of pancakes on the plates and turn around. Ezra was still there, he was standing up now, his head bowed and his eyes on the floor.

"You should stretch a little. Sleeping on the couch is sure not comfortable" he said as he took the three plates and placed them on the table.

A mumble came out of Ezra.

"What was that?" Kanan asked as he reached in the drawer for the syrup.

"I'm sorry"

"For what? Cleaning the kitchen?"

"You wanted me to sleep on the bed"

"I wanted you to be comfortable, if sleeping on the couch and waking up in the middle of the night to clean the kitchen is what makes you comfortable right now, it's okay. Is it what you want?" Kanan was now looking at Ezra, Ezra could feel his eyes on him. He shouldn't lie, he should be good to avoid punishment.

Ezra shook his head. It wasn't what he wanted bit it didn't matter. Who cared about what he wanted? Kanan's hand landed on his shoulder and Ezra jumped back if hear. He walked back from Kanan and looked at him with wide eyes.

Kanan hadn't moved an inch. His hand was still extended to where Ezra's shoulder had been and  shock was written in his face. Then he lowered his hand and gave Ezra a sad smile.

"I'm sorry. I forgot you don't like being touched. You mentioned it in the hospital, it totally slipped my mind. Forgive me"

Ezra was still breathing fast. He was still looking at Kanan with widen eyes full of genuine fear. He still nodded though. Kanan desperate to change the subject turned his glare at the kitchen.

"Why don't you go sit on the table, I'll go get Hera and then we'll eat" Kanan suggested.

Ezra looked over at the kitchen. Then back at Kanan. He slowly and cautiously walked to the table, not taking his eyes off Kanan. Kanan smiled as Ezra sat down and walked up stairs. He entered his and Hera's room,  and went to the bed. He gently shook her shoulder and her eyes fluttered open.

"Kanan?"

"Hey" he said giving her a light kiss in the lips. "I made breakfast, the kid is already waiting"

Kid? Hera looked confused, until the memories from last night came back to her. She had forgotten of their new guest.

"Did he sleep alright?" Hera asked getting off the bed. She took her night dress in and carefully folded it.

"The couch was comfortable enough"

"The couch?" He asked more confused. She opened her wardrobe and picked a pair of jeans and a white shirt.

"Yeah, it's a long story"

"One that you still haven't shared with me"

"I told you the basics last night"

"The basics, not the whole story"

"Look, I don't know everything myself but, for now you will have to work with what you know. After all" Kanan turned his look outside the door and the direction of the stairs. "It's not my story to share"

Hera, fully dressed now gave Kanan a small kiss on the cheek. She knew Kanan could understand Ezra more than she would ever be able to. Kanan didn't have a bright past either.

Kanan gave her a pained smile. Hera took his hand in hers and they both walked down for breakfast.

Ezra was still on the table, the pancakes in front of him untouched. He was eyeing them curiously. He couldn't understand what was happening. Are those for him? Why would Kanan make him breakfast. There were many things he didn't understand about this man. Why would he take him in? Why did he constantly try to make sure he was comfortable? Why was he always so willing to show him affection? Ezra couldn't understand. Maybe it was just for now. Just until Ezra got used to the new environment. From what he could remember Kallus was friendly too at the beginning. After a few months though everything went down hill.

"Good morning love" Ezra tensed immediately but didn't turn around. He kept staring at his plate with widen eyes.

Kanan sat across Ezra and Hera besides Kanan.

"You haven't even touched your breakfast"

"Hera's right. Eat up" Kanan said grabbing a knife and a fork. Ezra mustered up enough courage to actually look at Kanan in the eye. He was surprised when he saw understanding. Kanan smiled like he knew what he was thinking. Like he knew he was afraid to eat, he was afraid there was something in the pancakes. Kanan nodded encouragingly.

"Let's eat" Hera said taking her own for and knife and helping herself to the syrup. She had a knowing smile as well. Ezra found he wasn't as scared as before. Definitely less scared than last night. He took his own knife and fork and cut a small piece of the pancake. He gave on last look to Kanan and Hera. They were smiling at him.

"Let's eat" Ezra echoed. He raised the fork up to his mouth and took a bite.
