Chapter Two-Runaway Rebels
Her racing heart beat was in synch with her muddy converse hitting the pavement.
"Hurry Cory," she panted to the boy running in bare feet close behind her.
"Wait up, Ronnie!" Cory whined. The world was a blur of color around them as they sprinted down the sidewalk. Ronnie grabbed Cory's hand and pulled him into a narrow alleyway. They tried to be invisible as they pressed their backs against the brick wall. They were silent except for their hearts beating loudly. A policeman ran past the alleyway without noticing the two rebels hiding. Ronnie let out a long sigh of relief.
"We're safe" she whispered. All Cory could do was nod since he was still breathing heavily.
"Hey, what happened to your shoes?" Ronnie asked, looking down at Cory's bare feet.
"I run faster without them," he said. Ronnie nodded, she was used to getting into trouble with her friend Cory.
"Hey, I still have the bracelet I stole from the shop." Cory said, smiling. Cory took the thin bracelet out of his pocket and tore off the price tag. It was a deep red and blue color, and beautifully braided. Cory got down on one knee and took Ronnie's wrist. He carefully tied the bracelet around her wrist, and it fit perfectly.
"What a gentleman." Ronnie laughed, and curtsied.
"Hey, at least we didn't come home in a police car this time." Cory said. "Although, I do miss the comfy seats in the back of the car."
"Don't say that too soon, Cory, I think I see a cop..." Ronnie began to say.
"RUN!" They said in unison, and took off, laughing.
