Staff parties were strange events.
They were something everyone thought would be really bad and awkward. No one really looked forward to them.
But after arriving everyone had an amazing time. Staff parties were the best parties.
There was good music, flashing lights, and lots of alcohol.
Everyone was surrounded by friends and the stress of school life disappeared for a few hours.
"Shots, shots, shots!"
Mitch was having an exceptionally good time.
"Tone it down, drunkie!" Kirstie pushed the glass away from his mouth.
Kirstie was also having fun but with a bit less alcohol than her friend.
He raised the glass back to his lips.
Mitch took his shot.
And Scott's shot.
And Kirstie's shot.
He was on cloud nine.
If cloud nine was an open bar a few miles from a school and was filled with extremely drunk teachers.
"This is my jam!" Scott shouted suddenly.
Scott pulled both of his friends to the dance floor as 7/11 played from the bar speakers.
The trio started to dance in various styles ranging from slow and calm to hyped and messy.
They thought their dance moves looked sexy. And they were.
If awkward and sloppy was the new sexy.
-----
"Where are you going?"
Avi was also very drunk.
It was a Saturday night, who could judge him?
"I'm getting you some water and then I'm going."
Kevin put his phone in his pocket and tried to find a clear route to the bar.
"No! Whhyyy?"
Avi was slurring and stumbling and it was fun to watch.
"Alyssa's not feeling great and you, my friend, are drunk."
Kevin poked Avi's chest and walked towards the bar in search of some water.
"Fine! I don't need you! I'll find new friends!"
He tried shouting but Kevin was already half way across the room.
Avi, in his confused, deranged state, staggered over to the dance floor.
------
"I love you so much. Please don't go."
Scott was crying (again) and hugging onto Ben.
"Scottie, I'll call you everyday. It's not like I'm dying."
He didn't respond and continued to hold Ben in a stranglingly tight hug.
"Stop being a baby, you're 25."
Scott kept crying into Ben's shoulder until Kirstie pulled him away.
Scott was a very emotional drunk.
"Where's Mitch?" Kirstie asked dragging Scott away from Ben.
"Don't know." He sulked.
Holding onto Scott, she pushed people out the way to create a path to walk through.
It was easier when she had Scott, people moved for him. When it was just herself no one even noticed her.
That's why she wore ten thousand inch heels.
"Mitch?"
She spotted him sat on a sofa in the corner. He looked a lot more sober than the last time she'd seen him.
"Hey, Kirst. What's up?" Mitch greeted with a small tilt of his drink.
She threw Scott down next to him and stood in front of them.
"Why'd you look so sad?" She asked looking at the defeated man in front of her.
Mitch sighed and looked towards the door.
"Said goodbye to Travis. He's gone now."
Great, two upset, drunk men for Kirstie to deal with.
"The whole point of tonight was to have one last night as a faculty. It's supposed to be happy."
She was trying to cheer them both up. Kirstie didn't think Travis and Mitch were ever that close but she guessed she was wrong.
"I know." He sighed.
Mitch finished off his drink that was made of a disgusting mix of alcohol. It hit the back of his throat like a goddamn train.
The song changed and Scott immediately stood up.
"Is that Partition?"
Beyonce. The only cure for sadness.
Why didn't she think of that?
"Come on, Dipdot."
She followed him to the dance floor forgetting all about Mitch who just sat on the sofa close to tears.
-----
Once Kevin had given him his water, Avi left the dance floor.
He kept getting knocked and shoved by limbs. He was having enough trouble getting the bottle to his mouth as it was.
Avi needed somewhere to sit.
He looked around the bar and saw a sofa with only one other person on it.
-----
The goodbye with Travis had been rough. It ended with Mitch having to comfort him as he broke down. He mumbled something about missing the school and how nothing could ever be better.
It did wonders for Mitch's guilt.
With no drink left and a lot of emotions running around inside of him he thought it might be good idea to leave.
Just as he was about to stand up, a very drunk Avi collapsed down next to him.
"Mitchaaaaaaay!"
"What do you want?"
Avi frowned, "Don't be mean."
"I'm not."
"Yes you are." Avi whined.
"Ok, I honestly don't care."
Mitch couldn't be bothered to argue anymore.
They sat silently enjoying the music. Partition was such a good song.
"Why do you call me Daddy?"
That was sudden. Mitch didn't think much of it as, just like Avi, he was still very drunk.
"You get uncomfortable 'cos of your heterosexualness and I find that funny."
Avi superfrowned and Mitch laughed.
This was the longest they'd ever gone without insulting each other.
"Wanna know a secret? Don't tell anyone." Avi whisper-shouted.
"What?" Mitch asked facing him.
Avi leaned in really close.
"I'm not straight."
Due to recent events Avi had decided he was definitely not straight. Boys were damn cute.
"What are you then?"
Mitch had always been sure Avi was straight.
"Bi... I think."
He still didn't really know but bisexuality was the closest label to what he felt.
"Wanna know another one?"
"Yes."
Mitch was very excited now. His hatred for Avi had been forgotten after his last drink.
"I like it when you call me Daddy."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
