Chapter 5.

Mitch couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"It's the only way. I'm sorry."

Avi was speechless. (For the second time that day.)

"I know you don't like this change but there's nothing I can do. See you tomorrow."

She left the room.

Avi and Mitch, they had to...

It was actually difficult to say.

They had to...

"WE HAVE TO FUCKING WORK TOGETHER?"

Mitch wasn't very happy.

Usually Avi likes to see Mr.Grassi so upset but it was different this time.

They had just been told that to save their departments they would have to not only share a room but combine their classes.

This was going to be a very long year.

The next day was one filled with tension and anxiety.

Even the kids noticed the change in atmosphere.

Teachers were either terrified they'd lose their jobs or were scared to have to decide who to fire.

The math department was especially emotional.

"It's the right thing to do. Y'all deserve your jobs more than me."

The head of department, Mr.Bram, was arguing that no one on his team should be made to leave. He made the decision to quit so no one else would lose their job.

"No, Ben. You can't do that."

Scott had been friends with him for years and didn't want him to go.

There were definitely some others that Mr.Hoying thought should go but not Ben.

"Really, it's fine. I can finally go to Asia like I've always wanted."

The rest of the math department had gone now, all relieved their own jobs were secure.

"That's it then. You're gonna leave me? Who will be in charge?"

Both teachers were now teary-eyed.

"You, stupid!" Ben hit him lightly on the arm.

Scott could have easily been head of department if he wanted to. He was best friends with the principle for God's sake.

"I'm telling Kirstin tonight. My last day will be Friday so from Monday onwards you'll be in charge."

Scott didn't want to be in charge. He saw the stress that Mitch had to go through and his team was only made of two people. He didn't want that.

"I don't wanna." He pouted wiping his eyes of tears.

"Why?" Ben asked reaching a hand out to touch Scott's arm.

The main reason was he wanted to spend more time with his boyfriend.

He barely saw Alex as it was and didn't want any less time with him.

"I'm gonna miss you." Scott sniffled.

"You too, buddy."

They hugged and allowed themselves to cry a little more.

"What's wrong?"

Alex pulled Scott inside and hugged him. There were tears in his eyes and he looked exhausted.

When Scott got home from work he was still sad about Ben leaving and upset that he had to be the new head.

"Sit down, babe. I'll get some hot chocolate."

Scott couldn't ask for a better boyfriend. Alex was sweet, understanding, and crazily sexy.

"Now, what's wrong?"

They both had steaming cups on their laps and were sharing a blanket.

"Ben's gonna quit." Scott said sadly.

Alex wasn't really friends with Ben but understood that Scott was. They'd talked before but Alex probably wouldn't have recognised him on the street.

"Aww. It's alright. You'll still talk and stuff."

Alex didn't want to sound rude but Scott seemed to be over reacting just a little bit.

"It's not just that." Scott continued.

That made more sense.

"He wants me to take his job."

Silence.

Scott looked down and Alex sighed.

Alex knew what that meant.

Being a teacher was a time consuming job. They didn't get to see each other much as it was.

It wouldn't have mattered if Alex just stayed home all day or had a normal job. But he didn't.

"I won't be home until late and I won't be able to get days off anymore."

Scott spoke to the mug instead of his boyfriend. It was easier to talk to hot chocolate than a human.

"I can try to shorten the tour."

Alex was due to go on his next tour in a week. He was an incredibly famous singer songwriter and would be performing around North America and later in Australia and New Zealand for a while.

"Don't do that just for me. You love touring." Scott whined taking a sip of hot chocolate.

"I love you more." Alex snapped back.

"Eugh. So sappy."

"You know it's true."

They both sighed with sad smiles on their faces.

"Love you, Scottie."

"Love you, Allie."
