Mari. a.k.a. @ThatPakistaniGurl
She has been one of my favorites since I have read her Virat Kohli fanfictions.
Only she can imagine Kohli in love with a Pakistani girl or Kohli as a dark character. Whatever she writes is new and exciting.
She hates writing sequels but loves her readers so she has to write them at times. Yes we are talking about ThatPakistaniGurl
Me: Hey.
Mari: Hello!
Me: Let's start with the interview.
Tell us something about yourself.
Mari: Well, I am just a student trying to make something out of my life... But failing miserably?? 😂😂😂
Me: Agree to disagree!
How did you come to know about Wattpad?
Mari: I don't even remember... I was a huge One Direction fan so probably it was due to fan fictions...??
Me: Ahh you are the second person to say that!!!
What motivates you to write?
Mari: Main reason is Boredom. Also I have so many thoughts in my head and I have to write them or I will go mad.
Me: Who is your favorite author on and off Wattpad?
Mari: On Wattpad... There is not a favorite. I like few but they are not my favorites.
Off Wattpad... There is no one better than Khaled Hosseini.
Me: The Kite Runner is one book I can read any time.
How do you manage your busy schedule along with writing?
Mari: I don't think anybody is too busy with their lives to be honest. Like if you can eat, you can sleep then you sure can find some time for writing or reading whatever you like.
Me: Well said.
What's your favorite book on and off Wattpad?
Mari: Favorite book on Wattpad is probably Prince of Knights but the author doesn't update too often. It's been going on for ages and that's what frustrates me. The moment some writers get recognition and votes they stop updating.
Anyway, I love her works. She is super talented Masha Allah.
Off Wattpad, there is The Kite Runner as you said and Thousand Splendid Suns among many others. The list is too long for this interview. 😄😄
Me: I think we need a separate chapter for a discussion on books...!
Tell us something fun and something distinctive about you.
Mari: Uhh... I used to be really good at dancing?? I am studying journalism but I want to be a flight attendant. At the same time, I want to get married and have lots of kids.
I don't know, it's so confusing... 😅😅
Me: Haha trust me I know!
What are your hobbies other than writing?
Mari: I really love TV shows.
Me: From where do you get inspiration for your books?
Mari: From like nowhere... Trust me, I don't know how I write all this.
Me: What's the worst writer's block you have ever had?
Mari: Alhamdullilah, I haven't had any major one yet.
Me: One more gifted author between us.
Let's move to your books.
Twitter was a sweet and romantic novel... Until the unexpected twist. Behind Closed Doors was intense. And you were writing both at the same time. How did you manage to switch between the emotions?
Mari: It happened because the characters were totally different... Poles apart. Twitter Virat was way better than Behind Closed Doors Virat. So it wasn't much of a challenge.
Me: But you did a commendable work in Behind Closed Doors.... Which brings me to the question that Virat has always been portrayed as a chocolaty boy and a perfect boyfriend.... But BCD says a very different story.
Were you scared that the book may not receive the same amount of love as your other works?
Mari: Not at all. I write for my own satisfaction. The comments, the reads and votes are very flattering but honestly I don't care about what anyone thinks about my stories. Also I can take criticism, so I didn't really think much of it.
Honestly, we needed a dark Virat in that era!! 😂
Me: Haha!
We had always had Virushka fanfiction if it comes to Virat. How did you think of Twitter? It was very new, very different and very true actually!!
Mari: I just really loved Virat at that time. I still do but at that time I was a huge Viratian. So I wanted to do something Pakistani with him. Also the thought of Pakistan and India romance is very intriguing that's why I wanted to write it.
Me: Everything related to India and Pakistan is very exciting.
Now that most of your works are related to Virat Kohli, can we establish the fact that you are his fan? Are you a cricket buff too or it's just because of his good looks like many other girls out there?
Mari: I stopped writing about Virat an year or so ago, but I am still his fan. And about cricket, yes I love it... I am a major 'Freak out when my team loses and cry like a baby' type of fan.
Me: Ahhh... Finally someone I could relate with!!!
It is said that our stories contain a part of us and are somehow related to us. Which story of yours is inspired by your life or somehow connected to it?
Mari: None.
That's what I like about my stories. I write about stuff I dream or am obsessed with.
I wrote Humsafar when I was all dreamy about two successful people falling in love. Sadkey was written when I was into the idea of a patient girl falling for an impatient guy.
So it's like whatever phase I am into... I write about it. But my work isn't connected to my life.
I wish I had a Zaydaan though or maybe Hasaan. Definitely Hasaan!! Lol
Me: Not only you dear. Everyone needs a Hasaan!!
Can we expect a face reveal anytime soon?
Mari: Ahh no... I like to keep that part of my life hidden.
Me: Sorry readers.
Between Haya, Anaya, Aaina, Nia and Eira
a. Who will you befriend?
b. Which one is ideal?
c. Which one's quality do you want to change?
Mari:
a. I would befriend Eira. She was a huge fun.
b. Anaya is the ideal one because she was strong and independent from start, a feminist but she loved a man with her whole heart and without any ego. But when she had to fight him for her own sake... She didn't back off.
c. Aaina. Her lack of courage in start against Zaydaan, she cowered before him and so he used it against her.
Me: Eira indeed was fun but she had a drastic change in Complicated!
Most of the times you are not ready for a sequel but then how do you manage to weave a new story keeping the same plot in mind?
Mari: Most of the time I think I am not ready for a sequel but then I think of the happily ever after cliché ending and I want to change that.
It's not easy to live a life just because you have love between you two, there are way too many complications after marriage and I want to write about that.
Me: Trust me I understand the complications part.
What is the best and the worst comment on any of your books?
Mari: Hahaha... There was this one comment where a person said that Anaya was begairat or something?? I don't remember exactly but she ranted a lot and it was quite hilarious.
As for the best comment, they are usually on the last chapters. Readers write such fine words that I can literally cry.
Me: That was sweet!
Any tip for the new writers?
Mari: I am not good enough to give tips but I will just recommend to stop thinking about votes and reads and focus on your writing only. Votes will follow good writing.
Me: And this was an end of a very interesting session with the very straight forward and focused writer on Wattpad. Thank you Mari for sparing some time for us.
Mari: Welcome and thanks for having me here.
