Chapter 29 :The Child
It happened when I was back from hunting with Sir Bartemaus with the snow howling, peppered our coats with snow and let out a carefree laugh and swung my spear. We walked over the dunes and into the Tribe as the young ones and old ones ran toward us while they chattered and swarmed around us,eager to collect our fresh prey. The childern pointed at us amd grinned, they stamped their booted feet on the snow.Happiness was a virus and everyone was infected with it.
The moon was a planet in the sky illuminated every curve and shadow. It was a night sun. I crawled into my wooden igloo,I discarded my heavy parka and hanged it on a peg,the flames flickered and danced in the massive hole on the wooden ground,I left my boots to thaw under a wooden shelf.A seal fat candle flickered on the shelf as I leaned in to blew it.At my side ,darkness fell.
I fell asleep to howl of the wind, the cries of the wolves and the moonlight which flooded from the circular window. An old wolf slept on the opposite of my slumber spot. His chest rose and fell and his bronze body was slicked with sweat,he had recently bedded a mated woman. It was what I had heard from the men's side while they chuckled and swung a go of an odd liquid,it was normal. The flames of the fire showered the circular room in an orange light.
My eyes snapped open and swirled with an inkling of lightning like magic zapped and bounced on my skin.I took in my surroundings, the familiar crunch of snow too hard on the booted feet.
Snow ?
I blinked, and I heard the rush of snow in my ears. My eyes swiveled around. This was my world, yet it was different but familiar. The sky was metallic grey, tendrils of light blue cackled and trembled the sky and yet where I was before. The sky was navy blue with streaks of light blue light.
In the waking world, the snow was a long stretch of snow, but here ,it was a desert of hard snow peppered with dunes. It was high and froze mid swell like a frozen stormy sea.
The chill seeped into my bones like cold water poured onto my body ,bit on my fingers and numbed it.It stung my skin and pressed down on my ears,it made it burn.It felt as if a weight was placed on my back weighing me down,it caged my heart tight amd slowed my breathing.
What is this?
I whirled on the snow, confused and stunned.
Where was I?
Questions spun on my head ,like a whirlpool as I wondered and darted my head towards the sad ,grey wall which writhed and churn. The wind howled, groaned and moaned loudly, like massive waves crashing on the shoreline. It drowned and deafened anyones sound.I tapped my back and cursed.
No cape !!
The snow was a force,it blew my loose hair back and yanked me back as I tried to tore past its current,my hair billowed in the wind as I trashed forward.I tried to access my power,to cage my feet and prevent me from flight. But the wind was far too powerful, to wild to scary.
Wild magic ?!
At first,I couldn't tell but it was not a normal storm. It was a magic one, strong, wild and dangerous.I couldn't put my finger on it whether it was fey or something more sinister. I craned my head towards the sky,it churned like a raging sea.
I hiked up the ground, and the winds swirled and howled around me.The snow moving like a current underneath my soles.
I shielded my face against the rough winds as the snow blew backward and peppered me in its chill. It was a force, and it wasn't letting me have it.
Against the roaring, thrashing winds. My voice was carried by the wind.
"Hello."I yelled and darted my head,my hair whipped in the storm as the strands blinded my sight.
This wasn't my world.
Sure, the winds and snow were unnatural. It was nothing compared to where I thrived.
The realization dawned to me.
I was in the world of dreams---no,the world of nightmares.
With a sharp, deep breathe I threw my body and tore through the void. The world was a grey fabric and through it I could see the shadows amd blurred images of demonic and otherworldly creatures but here the sound was muffled and far away, beyond me.
But where was I?This...this wasn't my realm.
I whirled on my boots and flapped my arms wildly. The fear finally settling onto me like ice on a river.I hiked up the hill,I narrowed my gaze trying to tune myself into my power, but it glitched and blurred. In and out, faulty it was.
I didn't understand. My vision was at fault. No matter how much I concentrated amd clenched my fist against my baggy, hide covered thigh. My abilities refused to work.I let out a roar lf frustration, the world flashed a bright green for a moment before it diffused, extinguished.
From my postion,I observed the ground. From here the world strenched out, white and powdery looking like a carpet of white grass but beneath my soles. It was hard as glass.I clenched my fist again ,close to my sides,my claws itched to come out,to swipe and to defend.
Defend against what?
At this age,I was ten and four and now approaching my fifteen years.
With a snrill cry,I stumbled down the hill, the snow hardened around my soles hard and ran down with me with a controlled current. With a sigh,I threw my gaze around when the world behind me thrashed and whirled then with a loud boom, thunder struck.A shudder ran through my spine as my body went rigid and a lump formed on my throat.
The wind gave way, then my blood ran cold in my viens.
That's when I saw her.The reason for everything was going wrong. It was the Child. My breathe slipped off my lips before I could see it.At first,I assumed It was a boy but from my distance and enhanced sight,I realized it was a girl not a boy.I cocked my head surprised and raised both eyebrows.
She was a thin, short thing with skin as dark as Sir Bartemaus but a few shades lighter, her hair was the afro curly hair that he had but cropped short and her big brown eyes were wide as she whirled and spun around. Her hands trembled and so did her lips. Her feet where bare and she was dressed in an attire that wasn't fit for this harsh, severe weather.
I cocked my head and crossed my arms.Confused yet intrigued.
Was she ...a human,a mortal?
I was stunned and fixated.Humans couldn't enter our realm unless they had the Gift or they were invited to come and see for themselves and usually when that happened, it happened for a hefty price or something has gone terribly wrong.
My fist clenched.Or,there was always an or.It was a demonic beast or a creature that took the form of an innocent child.
Godess Above.
The godesss wasn't that cruel. Was she?I peered through the winds as the numbness spread through my fingers,it stung like little pine needles, and my skin began to burn and redden.
How queer ?
I was a werewolf,man-wolf,shifter of Amagup, childern of the wolf king. The cold was our ally,we grew used to it and our bodies adapted to it greatly with swell of lean muscles and thick with fat.The average mortal would freeze to death but creatures like me where immune---to some extent.
So this was the strangest thing that my supernatural body reacted to the cold I was accustomed to.
The mortal girl stepped back, clouds of air slipped her lips, and she whirled around stunned. Her fingers began to blacken, and her chest rose and fell.Ice peppered her lashes and grew ob her skin.
Itea.
The ice was going to kill her first if nothing was done in time. Her arms were bare, and she wore an odd shirt made of a lighter material and body hugging trousers.
"Hey,"I waved my arms and jumped. She darted her head and muttered a reply then with a curse, she whirled her head amd stumbled back. The woods that encircled us was nothing like mine.It was blackened, burnt and lifeless like skeletal hands. An unsettling shudder ran down my spine.
When something crunched a few centimeters forward and the girl jumped startled.
I was in braced position:legs spread, eyes hard and hands clenched.
A loud growl vibrated from a clearing in the trees, and a giant white creature came out.Smoke hissed of its giant slited nostrils and its eyes,oh it's eyes.
It's eyes were ember coloured, like a winter sun but it wasn't warm,it was cold, unsettling and harsh. It snorted again then the girl froze but I could hear her heart hammer I'm her chest, hard.
My eyes landed between her and the creature, then the creature and her again.
This was the first time I had set eyes on the child, and at this point,I had no idea that I was supposed to prevent her death.
The creature tensed, body curved, and then it let out a roar,I staggered and watched wide eye as I took it all in.
It had to be a Hollow one,a werewolf who went mad and lost all its will to become balanced with its wolf and human. Now it was only wolf, pure primal and animalistic, then it lun
The human let out a screech and bolted away.It leaped into the air and my eyes widened as it pratically flew through the sky and landed directly in front of her.She staggered forward, chest heaving and she crawled. It swung its claws on her.She gurgled ,blood bloomed out of her mouth and chest then she crawled forward. It pressed its claws on her then lunged, canine out and bared.
Blood spattered on the snow and the wind howled.I was stunned, glued on the ground as I crawled towards her, eyes widened as the creature stared at me with its golden eyes then it threw it head and roared then it vanished into the woods,I didn't even have to howl at it.
The corspe slept there on her own blood.Head lolled and blood drying.I stood and watched stunned.
That was the first time I whitenessd her death. And it was not the first time.
After I woke up,I was covered in sweat and shivering from head to toe.I kept my distance,I was quiet, and I looked away from people.Always deep in thought.
I thought it was a one-time thing, but I was wrong. Every time I went to sleep,I saw her.The familiar hardness of the snow, the skeletal trees, and the constant stormy sea of a sky.
This time, ice froze her from the inside and killed her.I realized she had never seen me or never heard my cries, but every time every damn time,I would scream and fail tremendously also on my knees, kicking the snow angrily and yelling into the void.Sometimes I would yell, scream or just accept my defeat.
I was on my feet ,next to her corspe as I watched her,my scream swallowed by the snow.
Sometimes, she was killed by the snow,a beast, or even forces of nature. Her recent death shook me to my core,I shuddered and stared at my feet.
I saw her below the waves and I tried to save her,but this dream was too personal and I felt that she actually saw me l,I held her and tried to keep her save but she ended up drowning into the icy depths and all I heard was her screams and gurgling.
I failed again.
Again and again.
